AKKO LGA CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE AS FARMERS–HERDERS PEACE COMMITTEE VISITS AKKO
The Chairman of Akko Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Usman Barambu (Dallatun Akko), has called on farmers and herders in Akko Local Government Area to embrace peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding, and cooperation as essential measures for maintaining peace and preventing conflicts between the two groups.
The Chairman made this call during a meeting with the Farmers–Herders Peace Committee, held at the Emir’s Palace, Akko Emirate Council. He warmly welcomed the committee and expressed his profound appreciation to the Executive Governor of Gombe State, His Excellency Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (Danmajen Gombe), for constituting the committee to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders across Akko Local Government Area and Gombe State at large.
He described the initiative as a timely and commendable step towards strengthening peace, enhancing community relationships, and addressing issues that may arise from farming and livestock-rearing activities. He further emphasized the importance of dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful conflict-resolution mechanisms in sustaining harmonious relationships among residents.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Abdulkadir Waziri Malle, (Wazirin Akko) the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, highlighted the purpose of the meeting, stressing the need for farmers and herders to understand one another, respect each other's interests, and resolve disputes through peaceful and lawful means rather than resorting to confrontation.
Speaking on behalf of the herders, Alhaji Ardo Nyalli contributed to the discussions, expressing the concerns and perspectives of the herding community and underscoring the importance of mutual understanding in maintaining peaceful relations between herders and farmers.
Similarly, Alhaji Yusuf Ahmed Dangwamna called on farmers to exercise patience and refrain from taking the law into their own hands whenever livestock belonging to herders cause damage to their crops. He urged farmers to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities and allow established mechanisms to address grievances fairly and peacefully.
In his closing remarks, His Royal Highness, the (Lamido Akko), Alhaji Dr. Umar Muhammad Atiku, appealed to both farmers and herders to cooperate, work together, and maintain peaceful relationships for the overall development of Akko Local Government Area.
The Lamido emphasized that farming and livestock rearing remain the major economic activities in Akko, providing livelihoods for a significant number of residents. He therefore stressed that peaceful coexistence between the two groups is essential for economic growth, food security, community stability, and sustainable development.
He further encouraged both parties to demonstrate tolerance, respect, and a spirit of brotherhood, noting that peace can only be achieved when all stakeholders are committed to dialogue and collective responsibility.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the Akko Local Government leadership, the Akko Emirate, and the Farmers–Herders Peace Committee to promoting peaceful coexistence, preventing avoidable conflicts, and strengthening cooperation between farmers and herders for the continued peace and development of Akko Local Government Area and Gombe State as a whole.
Peaceful coexistence remains a collective responsibility. All farmers, herders, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders are urged to support the peace initiative and work together towards a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous Akko.
