The Harder They Come The Harder They Fall: Tinubu On A Highway As INEC Clears The Air

*Matters Arising by Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah.

"So as sure as the sun will shine
I'm gonna get my share now, what's mine
And then the harder they come...The harder they fall, one and all (What I say, what I say)"- Jimmy Cliff 1972

Respect to Jimmy Cliff, a true patriot and prophet. The last few days have seen another round of propaganda twisting the tales that the Former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was indicted over a drug case in the United States, rendering him ineligible to enter the country and, by extension, unfit to govern Nigeria.

The harder they try, the harder they fall. The battle is to label Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a drug baron in a grand scheme to discredit him ahead of the upcoming general elections. Of course, they have succeeded in branding Tinubu as a drug baron in their "circles", which should not concern us because it is similar to how they refer to Buhari as "Jubril" of Sudan and Nigeria as a "zoo."

Jimmy Cliff began the song with this verse. "Well, they tell me of a pie up in the sky...Waiting for me when I die
But between the day you're born and when you die...They never seem to hear even your cry."

When Tinubu started the struggle, no one heard his cries because they were too busy building shopping malls or learning local advanced fee fraud aka 419, which involved selling our national stadium and national assets to wealthy whites and defrauding them of their hard-earned resources.

Tinubu's house was bombed; they seemed deaf to the freedom fighter's cries for a better Nigeria; some who fled into exile, such as Dele Momodu, relied on the same Tinubu in the same exile to find their feet.

But the harder they come, the harder they fall; now that Tinubu has decided to run for president, all hell breaks loose; lies that have been recycled for years are recirculated in an attempt to derail Tinubu's rising profile.

Tinubu's travails in the hands of his detractors did not begin today; fighting the military to a halt was just the preamble; after the military, what next, just as we should be asking ourselves after the electoral contest, what next?

They attempted to discredit his role as the executive Governor of Lagos State, but to date, no panel of judicial enquiry, whether orchestrated in the cover of transparency or persecution, has been able to indict Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for any financial crime.

Obasanjo denied Tinubu Lagos State allocations for three years simply because he established LCDAs to bring governance to the doorsteps of the grassroots, the core masses; similarly to his battle with the military, the PDP hunted him, yet he left Lagos with the foundation of new cities and tremendous revenue.

With the emergence of Goodluck Jonathan, the PDP government dragged him to the Code of Conduct Tribunal with the sole intention of crucifying him and confining him to the dustbin of history. However, the harder they try, the harder they fall.

Listen to this verse from this same track, "Well, the oppressors are trying to keep me down
Trying to drive me underground...And they think that they have got the battle won
I say forgive them Lord, they know not what they've done"

They have now resurrected a phantom drug-related case to further stifle Tinubu's progress, despite evidence from the then-IGP visiting this same issue when a petition was written to prevent the Former Lagos State Governor from taking any further political steps.

They came with a phony letter from INEC in an attempt to derail Tinubu's candidacy, but as Jimmy Cliff says, "the harder they come, the harder they fall." INEC has since warned of the shady plans, which are, of course, orchestrated by the opposition.

Tinubu is surely on a highway; his strategies and plans are simply too tight. In the coming days, we will see not only recycled slanders, but also new ones, because it is past time for Tinubu's detractors to be more creative and daring in spinning new yarns.
I'd like to conclude with a quote from Tinubu that summarizes everything said here: “I plan for betrayal, I plan for backstabbing, I also plan for reunion and forgiveness long before they happen. In life, I expect nothing, I expect anything, I expect everything."

The harder they come, the harder they fall; may we all be ahead of our traducers. Amen.

BETWEEN BEING BATified AND BEING OBIdient!

By Alesta Wilcox

"I was on a phone call with a friend and in the end he said he hoped I was "Obidient".

I told him I am actually "Batified" with no apologies

He wondered, "How "?

And I wondered back to him, "How not ?"

Without going into the arithmetical impossibility of Obi winning, I asked what was Obi's legacy beyond being frugal?

And how many countries ever developed by having a frugal leader?

Did the frugal Julius Nyerere develop or under developed Tanzania?

My decision on supporting Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is for three (3) reasons:

First, I don't believe any single leader can transform Nigeria. We are far too crazy for that. What we need is someone who can build a team that will work for Nigeria even when the president is doing other things. And the only contestant that has a record of identifying and building such great men is the Jagaban, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

Obi was governor in Anambra for 8 years, you can't name one single great man he identified and then built.

The only man he made and imposed is ex-Governor W***y Obiano. But you know what? They abandoned each other just after two years.

Is that the man you want to hand Nigeria over to? May God forbid bad thing!
Secondly, I see restructuring and devolution of powers as a major solution to our instability and undevelopment.

This, again, can only be done in partnership with the North, which has the majority population and presently seems to benefit from status quo.

So, Northerners would only yield ground to a man they trust, who can make them believe it would favour them also.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar can't do that because, right in his heart, he doesn't believe in it.

Mr. Peter Obi does not even have the liver at all or trust of the North to try it.

So, Obi would just keep complaining, if elected by chance.

This is why, of the trio of TInubu, Atiku and Obi, only Tinubu has the guts, the trust of the North, and can play the right politics to achieve that.

Finally, people fought for this democracy but those who colluded with the military were the ones that initially got power in 1999 unfortunately.

This is the first time someone who was an apostle of June 12 and who fought for this democracy has a chance to lead what he fought for.

Where were Atiku and Obi during the struggle for democracy?

They will contest this election, lose and congratulate Tinubu for his victory at the end of the day

If they choose to run to the election tribunal it would be within their rights but judgement would be against them.
Thank you!

They say Tinubu is a thief. That he drove bullion vans into his compound. I ask them whose money did he steal? I ask them whose money is missing? They go mute.

They say Tinubu is a criminal. I ask them which crime he committed and which court in the land or outside convicted him of the crime, they all go mute.

They tell me Tinubu is godfather of Lagos and he is very bad for democracy. I say alright. Then I asked, is wisdom not judged by what it can achieve. Using all known indices of good governance and prosperity, is there any state in Nigeria that can rival Lagos? They cannot tell me. They go mute.

I ask them, don't we all want to be Lagos? They say yes, so I ask them, if Tinubu is the brain behind this Lagos that we all are proud of and lives in with preference to others, then why can't we replicate his genius all over the country? They mumble what I can't hear.

They say Tinubu is a Muslim and that is the problem. I ask how? Tinubu's wife is a pastor in a big Pentecostal church. So I ask, how many of them who are Christians have Muslim wives & didn't Atiku convert his Christian wives to Islam? They can't answer.

I ask again, Does Tinubu relate with anybody in Nigeria based on religious belief? They know the answer but they will rather prefer to keep mute.

They say Tinubu is greedy. I say OK. So which of them will be able to elevate their own subordinates to the Zenith like Tinubu has done without feeling diminished? They can't tell me.

They say Tinubu is the problem. I say how? Has the man held any position since he left office in 2007? They know the answer but they just can't say.

I ask them, "is their any Nigerian alive not holding a government position as influential as Tinubu today? They can't answer.

And so I tell them, there is something this man is doing, there are principles that he is following, there are values that he holds strong that you can't just put down.

There is something about Tinubu in my opinion. So why not just let him unleash his genius for the benefit of Nigeria?

When I say that, they look at me bewildered. But that is where I stand. And I stand here not because of any other person.

This is how a support for a candidate should be presented NOT by cursing, insulting, harassing, bullying and abusing people that have different views or opinions from the theirs.

Today in Lagos !!!

Tinubu restates commitment to double-digit GDP in meeting with Lagos business community by Tunde Rahman

All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has again restated his administration’s resolve to hit a double figure Gross Domestic Product (GDP) if he wins the 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu stated this on Tuesday during his townhall meeting with the Business Community and Organised Private Sector at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The town hall session had in attendance the Vice Presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima, Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Simon Bako Lalong who is also the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku Bagudu, Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, Abubakar Badaru, Dapo Abiodun, Adegboyega Oyetola, Nasir El-Rufai and Abdullahi Ganduje as well as other party leaders and chieftains.

The business community was fully represented with President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, Jim Ovia, Chairman of Zenith Bank, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of UBA, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, former Chief Executive of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive of Access Bank and other business leaders representing sectoral groups such as agriculture, Oil and Gas, Trade, Manufacturing, creative Sector among others.

The APC presidential candidate laid out his Action Plan before the business leaders. Tinubu said having achieved similar economic success as Lagos State governor, he has the capacity to repeat the same in the country as president.

He said, “Lagos is an appropriate venue for this meeting.

“You may have heard that I was once governor of this dynamic economic force. However, may I remind you that when I first entered office, Lagos was a different story.

“My team and I developed a blueprint, a master plan, for Lagos. I can say that plan has been largely successful.

“We turned this state into a safer, more prosperous place where people can go about any legitimate vocation or venture regardless of their ethnicity, religion, region or prior social station.

“We did more than open Lagos for business. We opened the door for all Nigeria to join and experience the decent things progressive democratic governance can bring.

“We were not perfect but we did a lot.

“In doing so, we worked hand in hand with the business community as partners sharing the same goals of prosperity and renewed hope.

“Well, as you might have heard at some point recently, I now stand before you, seeking a bigger yet similar job.”

He therefore called on the Lagos Business Community to join hands with him to achieve this, stating that a viable economy requires collaboration between the political and business communities.

“Nigeria stands at the threshold between indifference and greatness, prosperity and poverty, the future and the past.

“The door is ajar. Together, let us open it so that we may cross over to the better side and secure for this beloved nation its finer destiny.

“The productive and beneficial things we seek do not lie in the sole domain of one sector. They reside in the cooperation between government and the private sector.

“I see no conflict between the business community and government. Yet, with equal conviction, I believe the private sector and government should constantly be at war.

“But they wage this battle not as enemies. They must stand as inseparable allies combating the mutual enemies of scarcity, underdevelopment, joblessness and the fear these bad things breed.

“The pragmatic problem solving and teamwork that improved Lagos, I want to bring to this nation.

“I ask your help as the task ahead is doable but also difficult,” he added.

He empathised that the nation needed to move from dependence on exporting its raw materials to nations who sell the finished products to us at exorbitant prices to one that refines its raw materials for upward export itself.

Praising the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration for its patriotism and commitment, he itemised his administration plans to build on their achievements.

These, he said include reviving dead industries, promote agriculture, provide power, produce and use made in Nigeria goods, build infrastructure and most importantly improve the country’s security.

“From its very inception, our political economy has been imbalanced and in need of major reform. Our political economy is much too dependent on the export of raw material or unfinished goods and the import of increasingly expensive finished products. Over the course of the time, gains from natural resource exports will prove largely insufficient to meet the rising costs of imports let alone support even the most basic demands of modern democratic governance.

“The time is now to cure this lapse. And time is of the essence for it does not wait for man or nation.

“We commend the work of prior administrations, especially the present government. This government has performed with patriotism and commitment during trying times.

“We simply must go farther and faster. My experiences in both the private sector and elective office afford me a special appreciation of the economic potency that close collaboration between government and the business community can bring.

“Allow me to share a few ideas that provide some insight into my vision for a more prosperous and secure nation where hope is renewed and despair rebuffed.

Regular Dialogue – All Nigerians must be invested in our better future. We must maintain the channels and spirit of respectful and productive dialogue. At times what I say may help you. Other times, what you say may enlighten me. We must always talk and confer with the best of intentions. Just as this open door policy is with me before the election, I shall continue to honor it after the election.
GDP Growth Rate: We must target double digit GDP to begin to reduce the poverty rate and I am determined to accomplish thua
Revive Industry: We shall bring the nation’s industrial policy to life. Key to this is our aim to create major and minor industrial hubs in each geopolitical zone. We shall not be satisfied by bolstering traditional sectors. We will foster productive excellence in new areas such as light manufacturing and the Nollywood entertainment sector. Through active participation in the digital economy, we shall make Nigeria a leader, instead of a bystander, in the fourth industrial revolution.
Promote Agriculture: We shall continue to press reforms in the sector that will increase productivity, improve farm incomes while lowering food prices and bringing enough food to the tables of ordinary people.
Power Nigeria: I am determined to give you the affordable and reliable power you need to drive your businesses in a way that lifts the entire economy.
Produce and buy Nigerian: We seek a consumer credit revolution, working in concert with the banking industry lead by the CBN. Credit at affordable rates enables the purchase of more cars and the construction of more homes. The standard of living shall rise and the strength of the business sector shall increase in similar measure.
Build Nigeria: We must continue with the expansion of infrastructure commenced by the current government From our roads and ports that will path the way to more commerce, to improvement in irrigation and water management/catchment systems to stem the humanitarian and economic tragedy visited on us by seasonal flooding.
I have saved the single most important point for last. May I conclude with my thoughts on security.
“We shall continue the fight against insecurity by redefining our counterinsurgency doctrine and practice. Our response to terror, kidnapping and violent criminality will be defined by the following elements:

a. We shall enlist more people in the armed forces, security services and the police.

b. Our forces will be given better tactical communications, mobility as well as improved aerial and ground surveillance capacity.

“Through these and other measures, we shall better identify, monitor, track, and defeat these evil groups where they are. They shall have no respite until they surrender or are utterly defeated,” he added.
