EXPORT PROCEDURES FROM NIGERIA: all you need to know.
One of the best ways to boost a country's Gross National Income or strengthen its currency is by encouraging exportation of goods.
Most local farmers lack the knowledge on what procedures to follow for successful exportation. Often times, they produce surplus, leading to spoilage and wastage as a result of ignorance.
Most manufacturers are not left out as they produce goods with needs in other countries but lack knowledge on how to go about exportation of such products.
Food items (raw and processed) such as cassava, maize, ground nuts, cashew nuts, oil palm, coconut oil, shea butter, soy beans as well as crafted items such as shoes, belts, braided wigs, sewn local wears, bags and lots more are produced on a daily basis but the knowledge of export lacking.
Well, asides doing your due diligence on the countries of interest to see the NEED for the items to be exported to such countries, the first step to qualifying as an exporter for commercial goods in Nigeria is registration with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC).
Kindly note that for every exporter, there should be an importer!
So, it is pertinent to make researches as well as secure contacts in the countries of need before considering exportation.
Often times, people just wake up without prior knowledge and just want to proceed with exporting their items.
This will only lead to doom and colossal loss at the end of the day.
Before embarking on that exportation, do make inquiries from reliable forwarders on the required procedures to avoid complications leading to loss or regrets.
Many goods found their ways to the ports (sea & air) accruing demurrage at the expense of the exporter who proceeded with shipping without making proper inquiries.
Below are the procedures for a successful exportation:
1. Ensure the items are approved and not prohibited for import in the receiving country or destination.
2. Confirm the necessary import documents from the receiving country to ensure timely and seamless clearance at destination.
3. Confirm the government agencies that regulates the goods from the importer.
4. Confirm if any special or specific packaging is required.
5. Choose the most cost effective and time efficient means of shipping.
6. Know your shipping responsibilities as an exporter and stick to them.
7. Ensure accurate export documentation processing.
Please note that these procedures are for commercial purposes as simpler means are used for handling of personal or non commercial exports like sending foodstuffs and other personal goods to your loved ones abroad.
