🌷 *Labour Begins: Knowing When to Head to the Hospital* 🌷

Movies often make labour look like an emergency action scene: waters suddenly breaking in the supermarket, dramatic screaming, and a frantic race to the hospital.

But in reality, labour usually begins much more gradually and calmly, and knowing when to head to the hospital can feel surprisingly unclear.

Join our next *Midwife Live Talk*, where experienced midwife Karin Siegler will answer your questions and guide us through the early signs of labour, when to stay home, and when it’s truly time to head in.

We’d love to see you and your partners at this informative and reassuring live session.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of questions.

Sometimes you may wonder, “Is this normal?” or “Should I say something?”

Here’s your reminder: you don’t have to figure everything out alone. 🌿

Here are 5 times you should reach out to your midwife during pregnancy:

1️⃣ When you notice changes that feel unusual for you.
You know your body best.
If something feels different or concerning, it’s always okay to check in and ask questions.

2️⃣ When you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure.
Your emotional wellbeing is part of your pregnancy care too.
Your midwife is there to support the person carrying the baby, not just monitor the pregnancy.

3️⃣ When you have questions about your birth options.
Pain relief, birth preferences, labor choices, feeding plans, ask before the moment arrives.
Feeling informed helps you feel more confident.

4️⃣ When you’re struggling with symptoms.
You don’t have to silently push through discomfort.
Your midwife can help you understand what’s expected and what may need attention.

5️⃣ When you need reassurance.
Sometimes you just need someone to explain, listen, and remind you that you’re supported.
That’s part of care too.

You are never “bothering” your midwife by asking for support.
Pregnancy care works best when you feel safe, heard, and informed. 🤍

The „Happy Spitter“ vs. GERD 💡

Most babies have GER (Gastroesophageal Reflux). It’s often just a developmental stage because the seal at the top of the stomach is still maturing.
When should you worry? If the reflux is paired with:
❌ Excessive crying during or after feeds
❌ Refusing to eat
❌ Poor weight gain
❌ Frequent coughing or wheezing
This shifts from a normal „spit-up“ to GERD, which requires professional support.
Has your little one struggled with reflux? Let’s chat in the comments! 👇

Some days feel heavier than others.
Too many thoughts, too many tasks, too little energy.
On those days, you don’t need to do more. You need support in simpler ways. 🌿

Here are 5 things that can help on the days you feel overwhelmed:

1️⃣ Slow everything down.
You don’t have to move at your usual pace.
Do fewer things, more gently. Let the day feel lighter where you can.

2️⃣ Focus on just one thing at a time.
Overwhelm often comes from trying to hold everything at once.
Choose one small task and give it your full attention.

3️⃣ Take a few steady breaths.
Even a minute of slow breathing can help your body settle.
It brings you back to the present moment.

4️⃣ Lower your expectations for the day.
Not every day needs to be productive.
Some days are simply for getting through, and that is enough.

5️⃣ Reach out to someone you trust.
You don’t have to carry everything alone.
A short conversation can bring relief and perspective.

Overwhelming days do not mean you are failing.
They are a sign that you may need more care, not more pressure. 🤍

Scan results are important.
They give helpful information about your baby’s growth and development.

But they are only one part of the bigger picture. 🌿

Here are 5 things that matter just as much, if not more, than your scan results alone:

1️⃣ How you’re feeling in your body.
Your energy, comfort, movement, and overall wellbeing matter.
Your body gives signals that no scan can fully capture.

2️⃣ Your emotional and mental state.
Anxiety, calm, overwhelm, or confidence all play a role in your experience.
Your emotional health deserves just as much attention as physical findings.

3️⃣ The quality of care and support you’re receiving.
Feeling heard, respected, and safe with your provider matters deeply.
Good care is not just about results, but how you are treated.

4️⃣ Your understanding of what’s happening.
Clear explanations help you feel informed and involved.
When you understand your care, you can make decisions with more confidence.

5️⃣ Your ability to ask questions and be involved.
You are not just observing your pregnancy, you are part of it.
Your voice and choices matter throughout the journey.

Scans provide snapshots.
But your experience, your wellbeing, and your support system shape the full picture. 🤍

Labor doesn’t always move in a straight line.
Sometimes, it slows down, and that can feel confusing or frustrating.

But in many cases, there are underlying factors that influence how labor progresses. 🌿

Here are 5 things that can slow down labor that are often not talked about:

1️⃣ Feeling tense or afraid.
When the body is stressed, it can shift into a protective state.
Relaxation helps the body work more efficiently during labor.

2️⃣ Lack of privacy or feeling watched.
Labor often flows better in environments where you feel safe and undisturbed.
Too many interruptions or a lack of comfort can affect progress.

3️⃣ Limited movement.
Staying in one position for too long can make it harder for your baby to move down.
Gentle movement and position changes can support progress.

4️⃣ Exhaustion.
Labor requires energy.
If your body is extremely tired, it may slow things down to conserve strength.

5️⃣ Dehydration or lack of nourishment.
Your body needs fuel to keep going.
Not eating or drinking enough can reduce stamina during labor.

A slower labor does not mean something is wrong.
Sometimes, it’s your body asking for rest, safety, or support. 🤍

Pain in labor is one of the biggest fears many women carry.
But understanding it differently can change how you experience it. 🌿

Here are 5 truths about pain in labor that might shift your mindset:

1️⃣ It has a purpose.
Each contraction is doing something specific.
It’s helping your cervix open and your baby move down.
This isn’t random pain, it’s purposeful work.

2️⃣ It comes in waves.
Unlike constant pain, contractions rise, peak, and then ease.
Those breaks in between matter. They give your body and mind time to reset.

3️⃣ Your body responds to how you hold tension.
Fear and tightness can increase discomfort.
Breathing, movement, and relaxation can help your body work more efficiently.

4️⃣ You don’t have to handle it in one way.
There are many ways to cope with labor.
Movement, support, water, breathing, or medical pain relief are all valid options.

5️⃣ It does not last forever.
Labor is intense, but it is temporary.
Reminding yourself that it has an end can help you stay grounded in the moment.

Pain in labor is real, but it is not meaningless or endless.
With support, understanding, and the right tools, it can feel more manageable than you expect. 🤍
