If you have a child between the ages of 6 months and 2.5 years, this message is especially for you. Take a moment to read carefully.
Many parents believe their child is too young for a school environment, but learning is not limited to the classroom. Learning sparks changes in behavior, skills, reasoning, and more. These changes can be positive or negative, depending on what, how, and why a child learns.
As a Yoruba adage says, โIle la ti n ko eso rodeโ meaning, from the abundance of what is acquired, one develops a good sense of style. In other words, charity begins at home, and learning begins at home as well.
Learning can happen anywhere and in many ways through nature, nurture, observation, or interaction.
Why and How Does a Child Learn?
A child first learns from parents, then from their environment.
In the womb: A child reacts to voices, sounds, and movements. They gain nutrients from their motherโs diet, respond to stimuli, and develop early awareness, that's a natural form of learning.
After birth: The child experiences a new environment feeling the sun, rain, breeze, observing light, people, sounds, and gestures. At this stage, the child learns by observing, mimicking, and interacting with parents and guardians. Culture, language, actions, meals, and values all influence this learning.
This stage is critical. Parents should consciously consider what they say and do, as children absorb everything around them. This is the foundation stage where all parts of a childโs development take root.
How to Foster Learning Effectively
Children learn actively through:
Music, rhymes, storytelling, reading, recitation
Flashcards, charts, images, and videos
Interactive engagement
While children develop at different paces, properly guided children become active participants in their learning. Skills like listening, speaking, pronunciation, memory, reading, and writing are nurtured preparing them for formal schooling.
Parents should carefully select learning tools, content, and activities that positively contribute to their childโs development. Screen time should be limited to short, intentional sessions, ideally no more than an hour at a time, to prevent overexposure.
The Role of Parents
Many parents focus only on food and shelter, neglecting emotional bonding and guidance. Being present in a childโs early journey builds self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, and problem-solving ability. A child benefits greatly when parents make conscious sacrifices and invest in their early learning.
