Tinubu Started the Red and BRT Buses; Fashola Executed Them.

The red and blue buses in Lagos stand out for their size and color. But did you know that both bus systems were conceptualized under Tinubu as far back as 2002, while Fashola executed them?

Tinubu's administration created the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) in 2002, which drafted a long-term plan to solve the chaotic transport system in Lagos. This plan included a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network.

Because building dedicated lanes for BRT buses takes years of construction, Tinubu launched LAGBUS (the red buses) in 2006, putting them on existing regular roads while the heavier infrastructure for the BRT was being planned.

When Fashola took over as governor in 2007, the plans for the BRT were already on the table, but the physical infrastructure had yet to be built. Fashola became the executor who turned these paper plans into reality.

Femi Otedola's company, Zenon, sold diesel and the popular construction company, Julius Berger, consumed over ₦1 billion worth of diesel every month.

In exchange to become Julius Berger's exclusive supplier of diesel Femi Otedola offered to award Julius Berger a contract to build his office on Victoria Island and his home in Ikoyi.

Julius Berger agreed to this deal and it fetched Femi Otedola ~₦3.3 billion in monthly revenue.

The most ambitious project Lagos has received under Tinubu's administration is the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, reported to be the most expensive road project in Nigeria's history. The road's first section is already open and running through Victoria Island and Ibeju-Lekki.

After this comes the Green Line Rail, that is part of a bigger plan to make Lagos a megacity with modern trains. The federal government is contributing ₦146 billion as partial funding for the train expected to run from Marina into the Lekki Free Trade Zone.

In addition, Lagos was also selected as the South-West site for the Renewed Hope City housing programme — though it is worth noting the project covers all six geopolitical zones, and not Lagos alone. Lastly, last August the Federal Government approved a ₦712 billion budget to renovate Murtala Muhammed International Airport's Terminal One.

The reason Lagos did not adopt Amotekun was because it already had the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC) which launched in 2016 and serves a similar purpose.

Lagos adopting Amotekun would've meant creating a security force whose functions overlap with an existing structure that have already had billions of Naira invested into it.
