TEXT OF NATIONAL BROADCAST BY PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED TINUBU ON THE 64TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA OCTOBER 1, 2024

Fellow Nigerians, as I address you today, I am deeply aware of the struggles many of you face in these challenging times. Our administration knows that many of you struggle with rising living costs and the search for meaningful employment. I want to assure you that your voices are heard.

As your President, I assure you that we are committed to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate the suffering of our citizens. Once again, I plead for your patience as the reforms we are implementing show positive signs, and we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Exactly 64 years ago, our founding fathers chose democracy as a form of government and launched the dream of a great country that would lead the rest of Africa out of poverty, ignorance, and underdevelopment, a beacon of hope to the rest of Africa and the world.

Over six decades later, we can look back, and Nigerians worldwide can see how well we have succeeded in realising the lofty dreams of our founding fathers.

The world is witnessing and benefiting from the can-do spirit of the Nigerian people, our massive intellectual capacity, and our enterprise and industry in all vocations, from arts to science, technology to infrastructure. The dreams that our founding fathers envisaged are still a work in progress. Every day, we put our hands on the plough, determined to do a better job of it.

While it is tempting to focus on what has been left undone and where we have stumbled as a nation, we must never lose sight of how far we have come in forging and holding our country together.

Since independence, our nation has survived many crises and upheavals that led to the dissolution and disintegration of many other nations worldwide. Six years after independence, our country descended into a political crisis that led to a bitter and avoidable civil war. Since ret

President Bola Tinubu's Statement on the Killing of Soldiers in Aba

I have received yet another disheartening news story about the killing of five soldiers by suspected militants of the proscribed terrorist organisation, IPOB.

The slain soldiers were on peacekeeping duty in Aba, Abia State, on Thursday when they were murdered, just two months after a similar tragic incident happened in Okuama, Delta State.

These unwarranted barbaric and evil acts are condemnable and should never be condoned or tolerated in our country.

Our soldiers and the police have the onerous duty to protect all of us from aggressors and criminal non-state actors.
Hundreds of them have paid the ultimate price in fulfilment of their duty, while some have experienced the indignity of being manhandled by the people they protect.
They surely do not deserve the mindless attacks by unruly elements in our society.

The federal government will come down heavily against those who have made it a habit to needlessly attack the officers and men of our armed forces.

On no account should anyone, under any guise, have the audacity to kill agents of state.

I want to make it clear that the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the armed forces have the capacity to crush violent non-state actors, making our communities unsafe.

I urge security agencies not only to fish out the masterminds and perpetrators of the Aba attack but also those calling on people to stay at home. Their actions are nothing short of treason.

The fact that the security forces are exercising necessary restraints when attacked should not be mistaken for weakness.

We are working to build a peaceful and harmonious society, but nobody should be under any illusion that the government will not act appropriately when the lives of our officers and men are wantonly taken.

While my condolences go to the families of the five slain soldiers, their colleagues, and the leadership of our armed forces, I urge other men and women on peacekeeping duty not to be discouraged by the unfortunate incident in Aba.

President and Commander-in-Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria

APC Women Group Honours Tinubu with Icon of Human Development Award

In recognition of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu's contribution to supporting and uplifting others, the Progressive Sisters' Network (PSN), led by Rinsola Abiola, on Sunday presented the APC presidential candidate with the Icon of Human Development Award, thus making him the first recipient of an award from the organisation.

The dinner event, tagged "Meet the Mentor", was hosted by Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, who testified to Asiwaju's immense contributions to the growth of his public service career. At the event, the Speaker also launched the national door-to-door women's campaign alongside the APC National Women Leader, Dr. Betta Edu.

PSN, being a women led and focused support group of the APC, had testimonials from women who had benefitted from Asiwaju's leadership and guidance, as they aimed to convince women especially that Asiwaju is the right candidate for the women folk.

The dinner, which was earlier slated for Friday, February 10, later reconvened on Sunday, February 13 in line with Asiwaju's stated wish, as he had to leave the venue on Friday to attend a meeting with the president.

Both dinners were well attended by government officials and leaders of the party's various organs, particularly women within the progressive fold.

Speaking at the event, Asiwaju described Rinsola, the National Coordinator of PSN, as "a thinker and a doer" and commended her ability and that of members of her group to pull off yet another successful event within such a short space of time.

He went on to commend her leadership skills, stating that teamship is a key part of leadership. He also spoke at length regarding Nigeria's challenges and stated that with commitment and unity of purpose, Nigeria's challenges are surmountable.

Those who spoke at the event include Senator Oluremi Tinubu (represented by Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir), H.E. Amb. (Dr.) Olufolake Abdulrazaq (First Lady of Kwara State), Dr. Betta Edu (APC National Women Leader), Ajuri Ngelale (Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs) and Iyaloja Oluwatoyin Badmus (President, Asiwaju Women Cooperative Society).

Chief Mrs. Lola Abiola-Edewor, who once served for two terms in the House of Representatives as part of the Lagos State delegation, spoke on Asiwaju's gender sensitivity and his leadership and problem solving skills. Mrs. Chioma Ogu and Maryam Busari-Obadina spoke as beneficiaries of policies introduced during his time as governor, namely the payment of WAEC fees and the One-Day Governor initiative.

The event, which was anchored by Morayo Afolabi-Brown, had many of Asiwaju's mentees in the public and private sectors present.
