SANWO-OLU: CHANGING THE POLITICAL DYNAMICS OF LAGOS

By Gboyega Akosile

In a period of three weeks, the political space in Lagos was charged up. The sound of electoral beat reached a crescendo. It was not the usual cacophonic sound that often characterises political campaigns. It was a well arranged sound; the type you get in an orchestra!

Sanwo-Olu featured prominently on the lips of political discussants in few weeks to the primary that eventually produced him as the Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the State.

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu dared to challenge the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; changed the existing narrative and moved on to rewrite the political script of the progressives with his audacious move. No one has ever challenged and defeated an incumbent Governor of Lagos. In fact, no Governor of Lagos State has ever lost a second term election! Alhaji Lateef Jakande's second term was truncated by the military junta. But Sanwo-Olu has gone into history book with his political adventure.

In what many described as political frenzy, the media was awash with stories; political pundits got back to work, bookmakers got busy with various kinds of political analyses and postulations in those three weeks. In the end, Sanwo-Olu was elected after scoring 970,861 votes to Governor Ambode’s 72,901 votes representing over 92% to 8% of the total votes cast in a direct primary held across the State.

Before now, Sanwo-Olu has played prominent roles as Special Adviser and Commissioner at various times in Lagos State, serving under former Governors Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN). The cool, calm and highly cerebral administrator is well known and respected within the political and corporate circles in the State. He moves along with the party, its development programmes and has been part of every decision making process in the group either as a member of the party or as an administrator in government. They, in turn know him. They trust him too. He has been described as a very loyal party man.

Since 2002 when he left the corporate world to work as Special Adviser (Corporate Matters) to the State’s Deputy Governor, Otunba Femi Pedro and thereafter as Special Adviser to the Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu’s political career has remained on upward trajectory. He has left no one in doubt of a very bright future ahead of him. Sanwo-Olu, a Lagosian of the first order thinks Lagos. In fact, his love for Lagos State has earned him an appellation among close friends and associates, who tease him with ‘Eko’jide, Sanwo-'Eko'. 'Eko’ here meaning Lagos.

You can hardly discuss for five minutes with Sanwo-Olu without him making reference to the development of a State he loves so dearly. His love for Lagos is known to all and sundry.

For Babajide Sanwo-Olu, every individual in a collective is very important. His belief in team work, diligence to duties and loyalty may have contributed to his success as an effective administrator. Jide, as he is fondly called by friends and associates does not discountenance other people’s opinions, especially in matters of development. He believes that every view counts. He’s a good listener, a team player! Little wonder the entire political circle in the State erupted in wild jubilation when he expressed interest in the governorship race of Lagos ahead of the 2019 election.

The Political Class

Lagos is a very complex State, given its many political tendencies, caucuses, movements and the highly enlightened electorate. The dominant movements in the Lagos political circle are the Mandate Group and the Justice Forum. There are some other groups and movements especially the new ‘’Abuja boys’’ whose influence in the politics of Lagos cannot be under estimated. They have the people, the contact and above all, they have the war chest to fight any political battle in the State. For good reasons, all the two main political blocs in the State as well as other tendencies, which used to be at each other’s throats over who leads the State unanimously aligned with Sanwo-olu’s aspiration. The Mandate movement was unequivocal about their support and endorsement of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and while the Justice Forum, which was not too loud, made a strong showing with its leaders and foot soldiers giving tremendous support towards Sanwo-Olu’s emergence as candidate of APC for Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu’s instant acceptance by various blocs within Lagos political circle remains historic as he is the first in our chequered political journey since the start of the current republic to have had such rare privilege. Others were always subjected to stiff opposition before they are eventually accepted by the different groups in the family.

As candidate of the APC, Sanwo-Olu has become the bridge, the unifier and a rallying point of all progressive elements in Lagos State.

Government of Inclusion

Perhaps the most appealing word coming from Jide Sanwo-Olu is inclusiveness. His promise to run a government of inclusion has attracted him to a lot of Lagosians. His understanding of party politics – an experience he garnered directly at the feet of masters for over 15 years makes his BOS brand a lot more attractive to both the local politicians and the business community who believe that Lagosians should take part in the progress of the State. He reaffirmed his commitment to this ideal in his acceptance speech:

‘‘A government has the most basic task of implementing as faithfully as possible the policy platform of the party. You have definitely not elected me as your candidate to become the master of the party. This is why I have said before and reiterate now that if by the grace of God, I am elected governor of Lagos State, I will run an administration that listens and responds to the yearnings of the people. A government that is open and inclusive is my promise to Lagosians.’’

Lagos State has always been lucky to have great individuals run its affairs. Even in the military era, the State enjoyed fairly good governance. However the journey of a new and modern Lagos started in 1999 under Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who laid the foundation for where the State is in terms of revenue generation, technological, physical and environmental development before passing the torch to Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who improved on his predecessor’s achievements. Then the incumbent Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. Babajide Sanwo-Olu played a part or two in all these governments thereby making him well prepared for the job of governor!

‘‘There is no doubt that I stand, today, on the shoulders of giants who have been in this position before in this dispensation. There is Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the pathfinder and chief architect of the new Lagos that is unfolding before our eyes and to the admiration of all. There is Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the actualizer, who built on the foundations laid by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu with passion and competence. There is the incumbent, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, who has done his bit. I am proud to have played key roles in all three administrations.’’

As Lagos journeys to February 2019, Babajide Olusola Sawo-Olu no doubt looks good to carry the day. He is a candidate to beat in the governorship race for Lagos State. He is a square peg in a square hole!

I’ll campaign vigorously for Buhari, Sanwo-Olu, says Ambode

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says he will lead a strong campaign to ensure victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and also for Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state in the 2019 general elections.
Ambode made the remark on Tuesday at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, shortly after he accompanied Buhari to perform the official inauguration of the new ECOWAS border posts at Seme-Krake joint border post in Badagry.

He said it was important for the APC to retain its leadership positions both at the federal and also at the state levels.
“I have just accompanied Mr. President to the Nigerian-Benin Border Post. What we have inaugurated today is a joint Border Patrol post between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin and it is called Seme-Krake Border Post.

“Again, just to also use this opportunity to let the people of Lagos State know that we are heavily committed to the re-election of Mr. President.

“You can see that his continuous visit to Lagos reiterates the fact that he is actually a lover of Lagos State and I am committed to ensuring his re-election.

“We are going to campaign heavily for him,” the governor said.
Ambode said he was also committed to ensuring that the APC wins the governorship election in 2019.
“We support the candidacy of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and we will make sure that APC retains Lagos State and the centre,” he said.

Ambode had earlier received President Buhari at the airport before the duo proceeded to Seme, where the President joined his Republic of Benin counterpart, Patrice Talon, to inaugurate the Border Post.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that with the inauguration, the Seme-Krake joint border, one of the busiest boundaries in the country, is expected to enhance the free movement of persons and goods in the region.

I will be a listening governor – Sanwo-Olu

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday said he would run a government based on the wishes of the people if elected.

He made the pledge at Ikeja while speaking during a ‘Thank You’ visit to party members in the Lagos West senatorial zone.

The APC candidate said his policies and programmes would be based on the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
He added that he would always keep a listening ear in serving the state.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke in Yoruba, said he was seeking the number one seat in the state out of the passion to serve the people and take the state to greater heights.

”I am in the governorship race because I want to serve the people.
”I promise, when we are elected by the Grace of God, I shall run a government based on the aspirations of the people.
”I will be a listening governor. I will attend to the needs of the people.
”I am here to serve and I will do my best to take the state to greater heights,” he said.
While appreciating party members for electing him as candidate in the just concluded primaries, Sanwo-Olu said he believed his choice was out of the confidence they had in him to address issues needing attention.

The candidate, however, urged members to brace up for the challenges ahead by mobilising members and residents to secure victory in 2019.

Sanwo-Olu urged members to put the primaries behind them and work together to ensure that APC was victorious in 2019.

“I thank you for supporting me to get this far. I am very grateful and I will not disappoint you.
“But the task ahead is bigger; it is no more a party affair, but we are going to the general election.

“So, I want to appeal to you that we start our preparations right from now.
”We should reach out to everyone and carry out this project together.
“We should put the issues of primaries behind us and stay together.
”I know some people might feel bad that they could not realise one aspiration or the other, it is natural.
“But we need to put all of that behind us and bring everyone on the train to ensure victory in 2019.”
Sanwo-Olu said APC had earned the confidence of residents through the delivery of democratic dividends.
Chief Rabiu Oluwa, Lagos West Senatorial Leader of the party, described Sanwo-Olu as a man with the passion and the vision to move Lagos forward.
He said party members had confidence in him, hence his emergence as the governorship candidate.
Oluwa urged party members to continue to support the candidate to ensure victory in 2019.
Also speaking, the South-West Zonal Woman Leader of the party, Mrs Kemi Nelson, urged party members to redouble efforts to ensure victory for the party.

Nelson appealed to party members not to underrate the opposition, but that they should see the Sanwo-Olu project as one in which they had to give their best.

“We should not underrate the opposition at all; we should not pretend they are not there.
”We should work, work and work hard and do our best to ensure victory for our candidate and our party,” she said.

Nelson said she would mobilise women to ensure the candidate win overwhelmingly.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Dr Obafemi Hamzat, a former Commissioner of Works and Chief Henry Ajomale, the immediate past chairman of the party in the state, were present at the gathering.

A member of the party’s Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Dr Abayomi Finnih, was also present among other members.

“There is a large disparity between the rich and the poor. We must reach the grassroots people, who do not have access to the governor. We need to make them feel the impact of government by reducing poverty. There is hunger in Lagos and we must address it"

“Our government will be a listening one; we will adhere to the party’s manifesto and my administration is going to be a participatory one.”
