Governor Otu Begins Construction of Standard Drainage Channels in Calabar

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, has approved and commenced the construction of standard drainage channels in strategic parts of Calabar to address long standing flooding challenges.

The drainage project is designed to provide a permanent solution to persistent flooding affecting the Ministry of Finance, the Due Process Office, Mofinews Magazine Secretariat, and sections of the Governor’s Office Complex.

The flooding problem, which has endured for over two administrations, is now being decisively tackled in line with Governor Otu’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and responsive governance.

Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of the drainage construction.

Biase Council Chairman, Hon. Edodi Eyong Edodi, Marks 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Akpet Central

The Executive Chairman of Biase Local Government Area, Hon. Edodi Eyong Edodi, on January 15, 2026, commemorated the Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Biase Council Secretariat, Akpet Central.

In his address, the Chairman expressed profound gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility as he welcomed dignitaries, military veterans, and members of the public to the solemn event.
He described the occasion as a special moment set aside to honour the fallen heroes and veterans who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria’s unity, peace, and territorial integrity.

Hon. Edodi stated that the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and veterans who endured harsh conditions, unimaginable challenges, and life threatening circumstances must never be forgotten. According to him, their courage and patriotism laid the foundation for the continued existence of the nation.

He explained that Armed Forces Remembrance Day marks the end of hostilities between the Nigerian State and the defunct Republic of Biafra, following the latter’s surrender on January 15, 1970.
The Chairman described the 2026 celebration as a reflection of sacrifice, unity, and national values.

He highlighted the professionalism and unwavering commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the current national security landscape, noting their vital role in safeguarding the country against external aggression and internal threats.

Biase Council Chairman, Hon. Edodi Eyong Edodi, Marks Second Phase of Yuletide Get Together with Biase Indigenes in Calabar, Donates Over Fifteen Million Naira ( ₦15,000,000.00)

In a bid to demonstrate inclusive leadership and strengthen public trust, the Executive Chairman of Biase Local Government Area, Hon. Edodi Eyong Edodi, has successfully hosted the second phase of the Yuletide get-together with logistics support of over *Fifteen Million Naira (N15,000,000.00)* across all the wards and critical stakeholders in the Local Government.

Speaking at the celebration, Hon. Edodi expressed profound gratitude to the people of Biase LGA, both elders and youths for their unwavering support, commitment throughout his one year and two months in office.

He appreciated the cooperation he has enjoyed so far and reaffirmed his commitment to people oriented and inclusive governance.

The Chairman highlighted several achievements recorded under his administration and emphasized the importance of unity within the *All Progressives Congress (APC).*

He reassured party members to be faithful that political leaders in Biase are united, stressing that politics is a game of interests that must be guided by collective understanding, harmony, and mutual respect.

Hon. Edodi further reaffirmed *Rt. Hon. Bishop Alex Ukam* as the Leader of the APC in Biase Local Government Area, acknowledging his leadership role and contributions to the stability and progress of the party in the area.

In further support of the Yuletide celebration, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition, Cross River State, *Hon. Barr. Odum-Ijom Ukam,* donated millions of naira, while *Rt. Hon. Mkpanam Obo Ekpo,* an abroad-based businessman and Biase son, also contributed millions of naira towards the success of the event.

MCC Dualization, Effio-Ette Flyover

The Ministry of Works Set to Commence Projects
Following the approval of the MCC Dualization and the Effio-Ette Flyover by Governor Bassey Otu, the Cross River State Ministry of Works has commenced preparatory engagements ahead of project ex*****on.

On Tuesday, the Ministry received a delegation from Zenith Construction Company, which has formally indicated interest in undertaking the projects. The delegation was taken on an inspection tour of the proposed construction sites by officials of the Ministry of Works, led by the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Hon. Ankpo Pius, Edet.

Also present during the site visit were the Director of Civil Engineering, Engr. Dr. Desmond Ewa, and the Permanent Secretary, Engr. Dr. Paul Bepeh.

Speaking during a press briefing, Hon. Ankpo Pius disclosed that several construction firms have expressed interest in the projects.

The Commissioner emphasized that the contracts will only be awarded to companies with proven capacity, extensive experience, and verifiable records of quality projects successfully executed across multiple locations.

According to him, the state government remains open to receiving expressions of interest from qualified and competent contractors capable of delivering durable infrastructure that will stand the test of time.

He further assured residents that construction work on the MCC Dualization and the Effio-Ette Flyover will commence soon and is expected to be completed before the end of 2026.
