“I Almost Punished My daughter for Something She Couldn’t Control”

One evening, my daughter stood before me with teary eyes.

The offence looked clear: the milk spilled, homework unfinished, emotions running high.

My first instinct was to correct quickly, firmly, loudly.
But something stopped me.

I looked again… and I realised:
This wasn’t disobedience.
This was childhood.

Parents ,there are things children should never be punished for, because they have no control over them.

Here are 10 of them;

1. Accidents

The glass didn’t fall because they were careless.

Small hands are still learning coordination.

2.Big emotions they can’t name yet

Tantrums aren’t manipulation.
They are unexpressed feelings asking for help.

3. Bedwetting

No child chooses embarrassment in their sleep.
This is biology, not rebellion.

4.Being shy or quiet
Not every child is wired to be loud.
Confidence grows with safety, not pressure.

5. Forgetting things occasionally

Their brains are still developing.
Memory is built with patience, not fear.

6. Asking too many questions

Curiosity is not disrespect.
It’s the sign of a growing mind.

7. Struggling academically
Learning differences are not laziness.
Punishment kills confidence faster than failure ever will.

8. Emotional sensitivity
Tears don’t mean weakness.
They mean your child feels deeply — and that’s a gift.

9.Making age-appropriate mistakes

Children learn by failing forward.
Perfection is not a childhood requirement.

10. Being different from siblings or expectations

Comparison steals identity.
Each child carries their own design.

That night, instead of punishment, I chose connection.
I knelt down.
I listened.
I guided.
And something beautiful happened,
My child didn’t just behave better.

She felt safer.

Discipline is not about control.
It’s about teaching.

Correction without compassion breaks the spirit.

Guidance with love builds the child.

If this speaks to you, pause before the next punishment.

Ask yourself:
“Is this defiance… or development?”

Because many times, what children need most
is not discipline
but understanding.

Justice for Ochanya: We Will Not Be Silent
She was only 13. Ochanya Elizabeth Ogbanje left home to pursue education — and found betrayal instead. Abused by those meant to protect her. Silenced by a system that failed her. She died in 2018 from complications of years of sexual abuse. Seven years later, her story still echoes — because justice was never served.
We remember Ochanya not just as a victim, but as a voice. A voice for every girl silenced. A symbol of every child failed. We demand justice. We demand accountability. We demand reform.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…” — Proverbs 31:8
