SURROGACY AND THE HIDDEN DANGERS IN NIGERIA
Surrogacy has not been clearly recognized or regulated under Nigerian law. Despite this, we often see some Nigerians claim that they had their children through surrogacy arrangements. In many of these cases, it is never stated which country the process was carried out in, yet people tend to accept and believe the claims.
At the same time, we frequently hear of law enforcement agencies arresting individuals, especially mothers, who attempt to sell their babies. Sometimes, sold infants are recovered from families who purchased them, from far away distances, Lagos to Calabar, Abia to Abuja, Ogbomoso to Kaduna.
Whenever such arrests are made, it raises serious questions about what many people casually refer to as “surrogacy” in Nigeria.
The truth is that some people succeed in these illegal arrangements, while others are not so lucky. In some cases, investigations reveal the involvement of medical practitioners who operate places commonly described as baby factories, where such acts are carried out illegally.
Sadly, intending parents are often convinced by close relatives or friends who say things like, “I know a doctor who can help you achieve this easily.” with ₦500,000 to ₦1,000,000, everything can be arranged. Three of my friends including my pastor have done it successfully. This doctor runs this as NGO to help families get babies alternatively.
This is where the real danger lies.
If you are unfortunate and get caught, you will be paraded as a criminal. But if you succeed, society may praise you and say you were smart. This double standard encourages illegal practices and puts many people at serious risk; egally, morally, and emotionally.
Dear friends, brothers, and sisters, this is an issue we must think deeply about. What many people call “surrogacy” in Nigeria may actually be child trafficking in disguise. Until there is clear legal regulation and ethical medical practice, people should be extremely careful. The consequences of getting it wrong are severe, and the price is often far greater than the money paid.
What do you think?
