BENUE STATE CHRISTIAN PILGRIMS WELFARE BOARD: MANDATE AND PERFORMANCE UNDER THE ALIA ADMINISTRATION (2023-2026)...

MANDATE OF THE BOARD:

The Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board is statutorily charged with the responsibility of organizing, coordinating, and facilitating Christian pilgrimages for the faithful to the Holy Lands of Jordan and Israel, Rome, Greece and other Holy sites. The Board screens, educates, and ensures the spiritual and welfare needs of pilgrims before, during, and after pilgrimage, while also promoting the image of Benue State and Nigeria as a whole.

PERFORMANCE IN THE LAST THREE YEARS (2023-2026):

Under the administration of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board has been repositioned and rejuvenated to deliver on its mandate. The Board has recorded landmark achievements, sponsoring Christian pilgrims to the Holy Lands twice within the last three years:

1. 2024 State of Readiness Exercise:
In 2024, His Excellency approved the sponsorship of the Chairman and the Executive Secretary of the Board to the Holy Land for the State of Readiness Exercise. This preparatory visit paved the way for the full resumption of pilgrimage activities after years of inactivity, ensuring that all logistics, accommodations, and Holy Sites were secured for Benue pilgrims.

2. 2025 Historic Pilgrimage of 76 Pilgrims:
In a major milestone, the Governor in 2025 sponsored 76 pilgrims from Benue State to the Holy Lands of Jordan and Israel for the 2025 Christian Pilgrimage Exercise. The pilgrimage was adjudged as one of the most successful, orderly, and spiritually impactful in recent years.

The Alia administration has been able to clear up a whooping sum of ninety-six million ( #96,000,000) naira debt owned by the state board at the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) Abuja during the Ortom administration.

HISTORIC FEAT:
For the first time in the history of the Board, and indeed in the country, courtesy of the magnanimity and detribalized leadership of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, slots were allocated to the 19 Northern States Chairmen of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to participate in the Holy pilgrimage. This gesture has not only fostered unity among Christians in Northern Nigeria but has also projected Benue as the true home of hospitality and the food basket of Christian faith in Nigeria.

The Alia administration has thus demonstrated uncommon commitment to spiritual rejuvenation, religious inclusivity, and the strengthening of the faith of the people as a foundation for good governance.

The Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board remains grateful to His Excellency for reviving pilgrimage activities in the state and pledges its continued loyalty and support to his administration.

CPWB FELICITATES MUSLIMS FAITHFULS ON EID MILAD-UN-NABI...

Makurdi, Tuesday 25th August, 2026

On behalf of the Chairman, Rev. Fr. Michael Micheal Melladu FJS, JP, Members and the entire staff of the Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, CPWB, I extend warm felicitations to all Muslim faithful in Benue State and beyond on the occasion of this year's Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the celebration of the birth of Holy Prophet Muhammad.

This sacred occasion presents a moment for sober reflection on the timeless virtues embodied by the Prophet’s life. Values such as compassion, humility, honesty, and service to humanity remain central to peaceful coexistence, and they continue to inspire the spirit of unity we uphold as a people in Benue State.

Mawlid is believed to be observed with deep devotion by many in the Muslim community through prayers, recitations, acts of charity, and communal gatherings. We also acknowledge that others, based on their religious convictions, may choose not to mark the day. The Board respects this diversity and the right of every citizen to practice their faith freely.

As a religious board, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding religious freedom and the dignity of all citizens. Benue State has always thrived on the strength of its diversity, and we remain dedicated to ensuring that every faith community is treated with respect and fairness.

As citizens continue to live together across religious and ethnic lines, we urge both Muslims and Christians to sustain the culture of tolerance, mutual respect, and unity that has long defined the Benue people. Our shared humanity and common destiny demand that we work together for the peace and progress of the state.

We wish the entire Muslim Ummah a peaceful, reflective, and joyous celebration. We pray this season brings abundant blessings, renewal of faith and stronger bonds of brotherhood among all Benue people.

Once again, happy Eid Milad-un-Nabi.

HONOURING A SHEPHERD: Mbakyõ Kinsmen Celebrate Rev. Fr. Melladu, Applaud Boreholes, Rice Mill, Palm Tree Projects

It was a day of joy and gratitude at Tyodu Market Square, Mbakyõ, Mbaanku Council Ward of Gboko LGA, as the Coalition of Mbakyõ Cooperative Societies organized a civic reception theme: “Honouring a Shepherd, Celebrating a Legacy of Service” in honour of Rev. Fr. Michael M. Melladu, FJS, JP, Chairman, Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board.

In her welcome address, the Chairperson of the Coalition, Mrs. Dorcas Nguveren Mchia Imbovungu, speaking on behalf of the community women group, Ungoov Mba Father Melladu thanked Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for appointing their son into his administration. She noted that several of the Governor’s grassroots-oriented policies have positively impacted the community.

Other speakers at the event commended Rev. Fr. Melladu for his unwavering support for the Alia administration and for bringing developmental projects to Mbakyõ-Mbatyav-Gboko, Benue State and Nigeria at large.

The high point of the ceremony was the public reading of the priest’s citation, after which he was dressed in traditional attire and presented with an award of appreciation by the community.

Responding, Rev. Fr. Micheal Melladu expressed appreciation to the Benue state Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for providing an enabling environment that has enabled him to empower his community with boreholes supplying potable drinking water. He also urged the entire Mbatyav community to sustain and keep expanding the over 20 cooperative societies he initiated for them, stressing that, organized cooperatives are key to attracting financial support from government and NGOs.

The priest further expressed joy over the community’s support for his vision of building a rice mill for Mbakyõ, which he said is now about 90% completed.

As Board Chairman of the Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, he promised to ensure a significant number of his kinsmen are included in the forthcoming pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

Rev. Fr. Melladu lauded his people for embracing the palm plantation for both NKST and Catholic Churches, and for the 52 households that received seedlings. He described it as a seed for future prosperity, stating that with dedication, Mbakyõ can become a center that draws investors from across Benue and beyond.

Though apolitical, the priest advised the youths to embrace politics of development such as scholarships and employment opportunities and to shun “politics of peanuts” like Maggi, salt, and wrappers.

He strongly charged Mbakyor-Mbatyav youths to pursue professional courses and skills that will make them competitive, noting that, the world now rewards impact and expertise, not just certificates.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Akaaka pledged to serve as the priest’s representative in the village to ensure that the legacies being laid stand the test of time.

Those in the entourage of Rev. Fr. Melladu included Hon. Shadrach Toryila Asombo, Executive Secretary, Benue State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board; Hon. Thomas Agber; Comrade Msugh Hondu; Rev. Sisters Mary Dekera and Sandra; Nurse Ashwa, Edward Melladu, Lawrence Melladu, Gabriel Asan and the CPWB Information Officer, Doris Yuwa.

The event was spiced with cultural displays by the CWO of St. James Catholic Church, Wua, and the Torshor Saviour dance group.
