DISRUPTION OF A HOLY EVENT IN UGA AND THE EXEMPLARY CONDUCT OF ENGR. JEROME UGBOHO

On the 30th of November 2025, St. Edward Catholic Parish, Uga in Ushongo Local Government Area, hosted a solemn Mass in memory of the late Very Rev. Fr. Peter Ajio Ugboho. The occasion, which also served as a thanksgiving celebration in honor of Engr. Ugboho Imoter Jerome, brought together parishioners, community leaders, distinguished guests, and political supporters of Hon. Engr. Jerome Ugboho, the APC Senatorial Aspirant for Benue North East (Zone A).

During the Mass, the Parish Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Cornelius Azor, alongside other parishioners, paid glowing tributes to the late priest. He was celebrated as a pillar of St. Edward’s Parish—a visionary leader who initiated and executed several developmental projects, including the majestic church structure standing today. A posthumous award earlier instituted to acknowledge his contributions but left uncollected for years was finally presented to his younger brother, Hon. Engr. Jerome Ugboho, who received it on behalf of the family.

In his remarks, Engr. Ugboho expressed deep gratitude for the honor bestowed on his late brother and used the moment to humbly inform the congregation of his intention to contest for the Benue North East Senatorial seat in 2027. He explained that his aspiration was inspired by the legacy of service left by his brother and his personal commitment to promoting development, unity, and purposeful representation in Zone A.

As an aspirant and respected political figure, a reception was scheduled after the Mass to welcome decampees from various political parties into the APC and to provide Engr. Ugboho the opportunity to address his supporters. Unfortunately, what was designed to be a peaceful community event took an unpleasant turn. Before his arrival, hoodlums allegedly led by an individual claiming to be the APC Chairman of Mbakuha Council Ward in Ushongo Local Government under the Alia-led faction stormed the venue. They disrupted the setup, scattered chairs, dismantled canopies, and chanted provocative slogans such as “No Alia, No Benue,” throwing the atmosphere into confusion and fear.

This incident, occurring immediately after a holy Mass held in memory of a revered priest—and within a state governed by a Catholic Reverend Father—raises serious concerns about the increasing trend of politically motivated confrontations finding their way into religious gatherings. Such actions undermine the sanctity of worship spaces, fracture community harmony, and signal a troubling rise in political intolerance within Benue State. Whenever sacred events are violated for political reasons, the moral and cultural foundations of society are threatened.

In the face of this provocation and an apparent attempt to incite violence, Hon. Engr. Jerome Ugboho demonstrated remarkable maturity and statesmanship. Known for his peace-loving disposition and people-centered leadership style, he chose not to respond with confrontation. Instead, he guided his supporters back to the church premises, where he briefly addressed them. He appealed for calm, urged them not to retaliate under any circumstances, and emphasized the importance of embracing peace even when provoked.

Afterward, he hosted his entourage for light refreshments at the residence of the late Aker Gajir before quietly returning to base—further illustrating his commitment to dignified leadership and responsible political conduct.

The events at Uga reflect a disturbing pattern of political interference in communal and religious activities across Benue State. However, the composed and honorable manner in which Engr. Jerome Ugboho handled the situation underscores his deep-rooted values of peace, discipline, and respect for human dignity. His response stands as a reminder that true leadership is not defined by the absence of challenges but by the wisdom, restraint, and integrity displayed in confronting them.
