PRESS STATEMENT BY BECCIMA ON THE PLANNED PRIVATIZATION OF BENUE STATE ENTERPRISES.
The attention of the Benue Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture BECCIMA is drawn to the ongoing process of Privatization of some State Enterprises by the State Council on Privatization and Commercialization. We wish to react as follows:
1. The world over, governments are not known to be good managers of businesses, thus the imperative for Privatization, to enable the private sector take over and run such businesses. Whilst comatose or dead Enterprises attract Closed Sale value, Operational businesses attract Open Market Operations value. The Privatisation committee should endeavor to attract commensurate value for the Enterprises put up for Privatization.
2. We invite members of BECCIMA and other eminent sons and daughters of Benue State to key into this programme. It is only when these Enterprises are made to operate above break even point and attract profit to the investors and the stakeholders that the various communities will get value from them. We urge the government and the privatisation committee to be Open, transparent, and fair in order to attract investors with the financial muscle as well as proven capacity and technical expertise to acquire these Enterprises and revitalize them for the benefit of the people of Benue State.
3. Similarly, we commend the government for Inaugurating the Enterprises Development Committee made up of members of the Benue State Executive Council and the Organized Private sector in Benue State, to fast track Enterprise development in every Local government area in the State. We enjoin all stakeholders to effectively play their roles to ensure the success of this programme.
4. It is our considered opinion that funds raised from the Privatization process be further reinvested in Capital projects and Enterprises Development in the State.
We urge the Committee to remain focused and deliver on this programme using global best practices.
Mr. Andrew Njie
Director General BECCIMA.
