Niger State has been identified as one of the leading states fully prepared to access funding under the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), a five-year environmental intervention supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB).
This announcement was made by Kingsley Nwauba, Natural Resources Specialist representing the National Project Coordinator, Engr. Anda Ayuba Yalaks, following a comprehensive three-day assessment visit by the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) to Niger State.
The NEWMAP-EIB initiative is designed to stabilize and control gully erosion, mitigate the adverse effects of environmental degradation, and enhance Nigeria’s resilience to climate change. Funded by the EIB, the project is a critical component of Nigeria’s broader national adaptation strategy, focusing on states vulnerable to soil erosion and climate-related challenges.
During the scoping mission, the FPMU evaluated Niger State’s level of preparedness for the successful launch and implementation of the project. Mr. Nwauba commended the state for demonstrating exceptional commitment, robust infrastructure, and institutional readiness necessary for the project’s commencement.

NEWMAP–EIB Team FPMU AND SPMU Visiting the Niger State Government.
Farmer Governor, His Excellency, Alh. (Dr) Umaru Mohammed Bago, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alh. Abubakar Usman, reiterated the State Government’s passion for erosion control, emphasizing the urgency due to annual losses of lives, properties, and farmlands caused by flooding. He assured the delegation of the government’s unwavering support for the project.
Earlier, Dr. Abubakar Sadik Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, affirmed the ministry’s full backing and highlighted the strategic importance of the project within the state’s environmental and developmental agenda.
The State Project Coordinator, Usman Garba Ibeto, expressed gratitude for the technical guidance from the FPMU and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to executing the project in full compliance with EIB.

The Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) delegation visited Niger State on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, for a Scoping Mission. The team was received by the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Usman Garba Ibeto, along with staff from the State Project Management Unit (SPMU), who led the delegation on an assessment tour of gully erosion sites across the state.
In a strategic meeting held to review progress, exchange insights, address concerns, and reinforce collaborative frameworks for effective implementation and sustainable outcomes, the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) met during the week with staff of the Niger State Project Management Unit (SPMU) in Minna.

Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abubakar, Pays Courtesy Visit to NEWMAP Office in Minna
The Permanent Secretary of the Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion & Watershed Project (NEWMAP) Office in Minna.
Dr. Abubakar Sadiq Musa was warmly received by the State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Mal. Usman Garba Ibeto, and other members of the project team. In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary lauded NEWMAP for its preparatory arrangements towards the project launch. And that the visit is to reaffirm the Ministry’s support to ensure smooth take-off of the project in the State.

Hon. Commissioner Ndajiwo Pays Courtesy Visit to NEWMAP (EIB) Office in Minna
The Honourable Commissioner, Niger State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed Kolo, on Thursday, July 3, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion & Watershed Project (NEWMAP) office in Minna.
The visit, which took place at the NEWMAP (EIB) office, was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Ministry and the project implementation team as part of ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges in Niger State, particularly in the areas of land degradation, erosion control, and climate resilience.
During the visit, Hon. Yakubu Mohammed Kolo encouraged the NEWMAP (EIB) team to be dedicated to the achievement of the Project objectives. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting ongoing and future initiatives that align with the state’s environmental agenda and climate change mitigation strategies.
Earlier, the State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP (EIB), Mal. Usman Garba Ibeto, welcomed the Honourable Commissioner and expressed appreciation for his visit and sustained interest in the project’s take-off.
“Our mission is to address environmental challenges arising from climate change and poor land-use practices in Niger State through innovative land protection strategies, and we’re encouraged by the continued support from the Ministry.” Mal. Ibeto stated.
The visit concluded with a tour of the project office. While both parties expressed optimism for a successful project implementation that will bring lasting environmental and socio-economic benefits to the people of Niger State.
