Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command Sensitizes Public on Heat Transfer and Fire Spread

The Federal Fire Service, Imo State Command, has sensitized members of the public on the concepts of heat transfer and fire spread through an educative radio programme aired on Omalicha Radio Station 91.1 FM.

The programme was presented by the Public Relations Officer, DSF Onyeukwu Chioma, who explained that understanding how heat is transferred is essential in preventing and controlling fire outbreaks.

She highlighted the three main methods of heat transfer:

Conduction – the transfer of heat through direct contact between materials.

Convection – the transfer of heat through the movement of liquids or gases, which can cause fire to spread rapidly within buildings.

Radiation – the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, allowing fire to ignite nearby combustible materials without direct contact.

DSF Onyeukwu Chioma further explained that fire spreads when heat from a burning material is transferred to surrounding combustible materials, causing them to reach their ignition temperature. She noted that fire can spread quickly through buildings, vegetation, and other combustible materials when proper safety measures are not observed.

She also identified common causes of fire outbreaks, including uncontrolled bush burning, unattended cooking, careless handling of open flames, and faulty electrical installations.

According to her, fire incidents can be minimized when individuals understand the behavior of fire and take proactive safety measures.

She advised residents to:

Avoid uncontrolled bush burning.

Never leave cooking or naked flames unattended.

Ensure electrical installations are properly maintained.

Keep combustible materials away from heat sources.

Report fire outbreaks promptly to emergency responders.

She encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and adopt fire safety practices to protect lives and property.
