IMO ASSEMBLY ADVOCATES FOR STRICT COMPLIANCE WTH TRAFFIC LAWS AND REGULATIONS WITHIN THE OWERRI CAPITAL TERRITORY TO ENSURE MAINTENANCE OF LAW AND ORDER ON OUR ROADS

The Imo State House of Assembly, during its plenary on Tuesday, 18 November 2025, raised concern over the blatant disregard for existing traffic laws and regulations by commuters in Owerri, the state capital.

This concern was voiced in a motion Chiefly Sponsored by Hon. Barr. Chisom Ojukwu of Nkwerre State Constituency.

Presenting the motion, Hon. Ojukwu acknowledged the “remarkable transformation” of the State’s infrastructure under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration, but however,
stressed that the legislature must complement those strides by passing legislation and resolutions that promote lawful compliance, civic responsibility, and effective traffic regulation.

He decried the rise of illegal motor parks, street trading, encroachment on pedestrian walkways, hawking, and other practices that obstruct traffic flow and jeopardise public safety.

The motion called on the House to direct the Commissioner for Transport, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, to enforce all existing traffic laws within the Owerri Capital Territory, thereby restoring order, safety, and aesthetic discipline across the city.

Hon. Ojukwu urged his colleagues to lend their voices in support of the motion.

Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Hon. Okechukwu Udeze of Ideato North, and Hon. Clinton Amadi of Owerri Municipal all commended the mover and affirmed that the measures would have a positive impact on Owerri and the state as a whole.

Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, while contributing to the debate on the motion, described it as “a timely step towards a cleaner, safer Owerri."

Hon. Okechukwu Udeze of Ideato North State Constituency added that “strict enforcement will restore confidence in our urban planning.”

When put to vote, the motion was adopted unanimously, and the clerk of the House was mandated to send the House Resolution to all relevant Agencies
