Chapter 2
”Liying, your sister Yuesong was also born in July. Her birthday is the nineteenth. That means she qualifies too,” grandma Gumina Chen said, as she coughed lightly from her seat.
The table fell silent for a beat. Then Mrs Gemma lips curled into a sneer. ”Mother in law, must you ruin our breakfast with such nonsense? Yuesong is unlucky. Ever since her birth, our family has faced one misfortune after another. How could she be chosen by the Takashiros? Don't make me laugh.”
Yuesong lowered her head, her fingers tightening around her bowl. She said nothing. She had learned long ago that speaking only invited harsher words.
Liying smirked, twirling her spoon. ”Grandmother, don't joke. Do you really think the Takashiros would ever look at her? She's nothing but....an embarrassment.”
”Yuesong is still my grand daughter,” grandma Gumina said firmly, though her voice trembled with age. ”She has more right than anyone ___”
”Enough!,” Mr Chen's voice cracked like a whip, his eyes turned cold as they fixed on Yuesong. ”Don't ever think you can compete with your sister. The Takashiros will never accept a girl like you.”
Yuesong's heart ached, but she remained silent. She had always been silent. Mrs Chen voice dropped low, sharp as a blade. ”Still, the Takashiros must never discover there are two daughters who fit the prophecy. If they find out, our chances will be ruined, Yuesong must keep quiet...or else. Her gaze slid toward Yuesong, filled with disdain. ”Do you understand, girl?”
Yuesong nodded faintly. ”Yes, mother.”
Liying laughed softly, leaning closer to whisper in Yuesong's ear. ”Even if the Takashiros saw you, they'd never want you. But you will be useful. If anyone asks, you're nothing but my maid.”
Their grandma slammed her chop sticks down. ”Liying! How dare you speak like that?”
Liying pouted. ”Grandmother, I'm only telling the truth. She's better off as my shadow. At least then she'll have a purpose. Yuesong bit her lip until it bled, holding back tears. She couldn't fight them. Not here. Not ever.
”Yuesong, if you dare expose your identity.... remember, your late mother left behind a company and a gold necklace. Do you know where they are now?” Mrs Chen threatened, eyes glittering coldly.
Yuesong froze.
Her mother's necklace __ the only thing she had left of her, was locked away in Mrs Chen's possession. Mrs Chen continued, her smile turned cruel. ”If you want that necklace to remain safe, you will obey us. Otherwise...I will destroy every trace of your mother's memory.”
Something in Yuesong's chest cracked, but she forced herself to bow her head. ”I understand, mother.”
√ Evening √
Yuesong sat alone in her tiny, dimly lit room at the back of the mansion. She touched the scar on her wrist. The one from when she was six, when Mrs Chen had once ordered her face be ruined with boiling water. If not for grandma Gumina saving her, she would have been disfigured forever. Since then, Yuesong had worn plain masks and cloth when ever she left her room or the house, hiding her true face.
No one knew the truth. She was far more beautiful than Liying. But beauty was dangerous in her family. A knock sounded on her door. Liying stepped in, dressed in silks, her lips curled into a smirk. ”Sister,” she cooed mockingly, ”Tomorrow we are going to the Takashiros. I'll be introduced as their future daughter in law. You, on the other hand... She tossed a maid's uniform onto Yuesong bed. ”will be my servant. Cover your face. Say nothing, if you dare embarrass me, I'll see to it that mother burns your precious necklace right in front of you.”
Yuesong throat tightened. For a long moment, she stared at the uniform, at the symbol of her humiliation. Then with shaking hands, she picked it up. ”i will do it.”
”Good girl. Remember, Yuesong, your only value is to serve me,” Liying said, as her laughter echoed coldly in the room. Then she left, shutting the door. Immediately Yuesong collapsed onto the bed, clutching the cloth tightly as tears slid down her cheeks.
By evening, the Takashiro mansion was eerily silent. Servants lined up in neat rows, head bowed as the Chen family's carriages rolled past the gates. The sound of cicadas echoed in the garden, but beneath the stillness, there was a pulse of fear.
Inside the carriage, Liying adjusted her silk veil, admiring her reflection in a polished bronze mirror. ”Do I look perfect, mother?”
”You look like a goddess,” Mrs Chen said proudly. ”Remember, the Takashiros want a daughter in law who is elegant and obedient. Tonight, you must prove you are the one destined for their son.”
”Of course, I was born for this,” Liying said, eyes gleaming.
In the corner, Yuesong sat quietly in the maid's uniform, her face covered with a plain cloth veil. She kept her gaze on her lap, ignoring the way her step mother's cold eyes burned holes through her. Mrs Chen leaned close, voice sharp. ”Remember what I told you. You're nothing but a servant. Do not speak unless spoken to. If anyone asks why your face is covered, you tell them, you have an infection. Is that clear?”
”Yes, mother,” Yuesong whispered.
The carriage halted. Guards opened the doors, bowing deeply. ”The Chen family is here.”
”Alright Liying, I will go back home now. I only followed you to ensure your safety. You know what to do, right?,” Mrs Chen said.
”Yes, mother. You take care,” Liying replied.
The servants then led Liying and Yuesong to the inner hall, but when Liying spotted the side courtyard guarded by iron gates, her curiosity piqued. ”Is that... where the young master is kept?” she asked softly.
One servant stiffened. ”Y...Yes, miss. But it is forbidden ___”
”Show us,” Liying said, silencing him with a glance.
