OBIO/AKPOR LG BEGINS DEMOLITION OF ILLEGAL STRUCTURES AND SHANTIES ALONG OBIRI-IKWERRE AXIS.

•••Plans to Extend Demolition to other areas of concern.

In a decisive move to restore order and enhance public safety, the Obio/Akpor Local Government council has commenced the demolition of illegal structures and shanties along the Obiri-Ikwerre axis.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the growing problem of unauthorized construction of illegal structures that have posed a threat to the well-being and security of residents and commuters in the local government area.

Over the past months, areas such as Obiri-Ikwerre, Choba Junction and Rumuorlumeni have experienced a rise in the construction of illegal buildings, many of these structures are situated in high-risk zones, posing a significant danger to both the environment and public safety.

The demolition exercise follows months of media announcements, stakeholder engagements and sensitization geared towards creating a safer, cleaner and more organized environment for everyone.

Notices were issued on separate occasions over the course of two months. These notices were delivered directly to affected residents, outlining the risks associated with erecting illegal structures with specific deadlines for removal.

The demolition began from the Obiri-Ikwerre area, with plans to extend the operation to other high-priority locations, including Choba Junction,Rumuola, Rumuorlumeni axis etc.
Where encroachments as such have remained a source of concern.

Through this initiative, the Obio/Akpor Local Government council aims to address the dangers posed by unauthorized buildings and improve the overall living conditions of residents as well as creating a safe and enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

OBIO/AKPOR LG HOLDS MAIDEN BUSINESS, ECONOMIC FORUM, SETS AGENDA FOR INVESTMENT AND GROWTH

Obio/Akpor Local Government Area has successfully hosted the maiden edition of the Obio/Akpor Business and Economic Forum (OBEF) at the prestigious Hotel Presidential, marking a significant step toward economic transformation and investment drive within the council.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, described the forum as a bold and deliberate step toward unlocking the vast economic potential of the area.

According to him, “Today marks a defining moment in the economic history of Obio/Akpor. This forum is not just a gathering, but a movement—a platform where ideas meet opportunities, and where policy aligns with enterprise.

Our administration is committed to creating an enabling environment where businesses can thrive, investments are protected, and innovation is encouraged. We recognize that government alone cannot drive development; it requires the active collaboration of the private sector and academia.

That is why we have embraced the Triple Helix Approach—bringing together government, industry, and academia—to foster innovation, drive knowledge exchange, and ensure sustainable economic growth. Obio/Akpor is open for business, and we are ready to partner with all stakeholders to build a prosperous and inclusive economy.”

The Obio/Akpor Business and Economic Forum (OBEF) is designed as a strategic platform aimed at driving economic growth, stimulating investment opportunities, and promoting public-private partnerships within the local government. Central to the initiative is the adoption of the Triple Helix model, which integrates policy direction, industrial capacity, and academic research to create a dynamic ecosystem for development.

Delivering the keynote address, the Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Prof. Okechukwu Onuchukwu, emphasized the critical role of stakeholders in shaping the local economy. He noted that sustainable economic development cannot be achieved in isolation, stressing the need for synergy among government institutions, private sector actors, and research bodies.

Prof. Onuchukwu highlighted that academia plays a pivotal role in driving innovation through research and human capital development, while the private sector serves as the engine of growth through investment and job creation. He further stressed that government must provide the right policies, infrastructure, and regulatory framework to enable businesses to flourish.

He called for continuous engagement among stakeholders, noting that local economies thrive when knowledge is translated into practical solutions, investments are encouraged, and policies are responsive to emerging economic realities.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, was honoured with the prestigious award of Best Local Government Chairman in the South-South Region by the South South Media and Entertainment Awards, in recognition of his outstanding leadership and commitment to grassroots development. The recognition further reinforced confidence in his administration’s vision for economic transformation and good governance in Obio/Akpor.

OBALGA BOSS SEEKS LEGISLATIVE BACKING ON SIX KEY BILLS TO REPOSITION OBIO/AKPOR

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has appeared before the Obio/Akpor Legislative Council to deliver a comprehensive policy statement, shedding more light on six Executive Bills earlier transmitted to the Council for consideration.

Addressing the lawmakers in a formal session, the Council Chairman emphasized that his visit was not to newly present the bills but to further clarify their objectives, rationale and expected impact on governance and development within the Local Government Area.

He explained that the proposed Tenement Rate and Digital Revenue Bill seeks to modernize the local government’s revenue framework through a transparent and technology-driven system that will eliminate leakages and ensure fairness in tax administration. On security, the Obio/Akpor Security Company Bill is designed to establish a structured, community-based outfit that will complement existing security agencies in safeguarding lives and property.

Speaking further, Hon. Gift Worlu noted that the Obio/Akpor Traffic Management Agency (OBATAM) Bill is aimed at regulating traffic flow, motor park activities, and general road usage in order to address congestion and improve mobility across the area. He added that the Environmental and Urban Order Bill is targeted at prohibiting street trading, illegal markets, and other activities that undermine urban planning and environmental safety.

The Chairman also highlighted the importance of the Whistleblowing and Revenue Protection Bill, which he said would encourage citizens to report concealed commercial activities while guaranteeing protection for informants. In the same vein, he noted that the Land Use Regulation and Protection Bill is intended to tackle fraudulent land transactions, unauthorized developments and multiple land sales through a structured registration and clearance system.

Hon. Gift Worlu stressed that the expected impact of the bills, if passed into law, would include improved internally generated revenue, enhanced security architecture, restoration of environmental order, protection against land-related fraud and overall improvement in the quality of life for residents.

He therefore urged the Legislative Council to give the bills thorough and expeditious consideration, expressing confidence in their capacity to refine and strengthen the proposals for the benefit of the people.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to a cordial Executive–Legislative relationship, the Chairman called for continued partnership in building a more efficient, secure and economically vibrant Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
