OBIO/AKPOR COUNCIL BOSS DISTRIBUTES FIRST PHASE OF TRANSFORMER TO COMMUNITIES

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has commenced the first phase of distribution of electricity transformers to various communities in the LGA, in a move aimed at improving power supply.

The official distribution ceremony, which held at the council headquarters, was presided over by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche, who represented the Chairman.

Addressing community leaders and beneficiaries, Dr. Joyce Nyeche said the initiative reflected the administration’s strong commitment to infrastructural development and the welfare of the people.

She explained that access to electricity is a basic social amenity and a constitutional right of the people, stressing that no community should remain in darkness.

Dr. Joyce Nyeche noted that the project is in line with the administration’s ARISE Agenda, where the “I” stands for Infrastructure, adding that the chairman is determined to deliver tangible dividends of democracy

Earlier in his remarks, the Secretary of Obio/Akpor LGA, Dr. Kelvin Akani, said the decision to distribute transformers followed numerous applications from communities suffering from epileptic power supply and prolonged darkness.

Dr. Akani disclosed that about ten communities were selected for the first phase, noting that priority was given to areas that had been without power for a long time, those with overloaded transformers and those with faulty equipments

In his brief remarks, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Victor Wokeh, described the exercise as the first phase of a broader intervention and advised communities to protect and maintain government properties within their domains.

Responding on behalf of the communities, HRH Eze Allwell A.D. Owhonda, JP, Eze Oha Okoro III, Paramount Ruler of Nyewe-Eli Okoro Clan, expressed gratitude to the chairman for fulfilling his promise.

“We are very happy. Without light, people cannot pump water or cook. We will take good care of this transformer. It is our personal property,” the monarch pledged.

He prayed for God’s continued strength and success for Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, assuring the administration of the community’s support.

The Rivers State Government has formally presented the newly renovated Rukpokwu Modern Primary Healthcare Centre to the community, while continuing its two-day free medical outreach aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services for residents.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, expressed satisfaction with the project and commended the leadership of the State Ministry of Health, and the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) for their commitment towards strengthening primary healthcare delivery.

He emphasized the need for a renewed maintenance culture, urging communities to actively protect and support public facilities. According to him, community resources, including modest contributions, can be deployed to support routine maintenance such as painting and minor repairs.

The Obio/Akpor Chairman further disclosed that the construction of new health centres and the maintenance of existing ones would be a priority item in the 2026 budget of the Local Government Area, stressing that health remains the foundation upon which education, productivity, and security depend.

In his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Chituru Adele, described the commissioning of the renovated health centre and the flag-off of the free medical outreach as a major milestone in strengthening primary healthcare service delivery across the state.

Dr. Adele stated that the renovation was not merely an infrastructure upgrade but a reaffirmation of commitment to accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare. He urged the community to ensure proper utilization and maintenance of the facility, while encouraging residents to take full advantage of the two-day free medical outreach, which offers medical consultations, screenings, and health education.

He appreciated the Rivers State Government, the Ministry of Health, and development partners, particularly the World Health Organization (WHO), for their continued technical support and partnership, reaffirming WHO’s commitment to improving health outcomes across the state.

Representing the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Justina Jumbo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of maintenance culture, starting with health workers. She urged staff to remain committed to their duty posts and ensure timely repairs, cleanliness, and professionalism to encourage sustained patronage by the public.

RSPHCMB COMMISSIONS RENOVATED MODERN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE CENTRE IN WOJI, FLAGS OFF 2-DAY FREE MEDICAL OUTREACH

The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) has commissioned the renovated Modern Primary Health Care Centre (MPHC), Woji, and flagged off a two-day free medical outreach aimed at improving access to quality health care for residents of the community.

The commissioning ceremony which held at the health centre in Woji, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, attracted top government officials, stakeholders in the health sectors, community leaders, and residents, marking another milestone in the Rivers State Government’s drive to reposition primary health care delivery.

Addressing the gathering, the Vice Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Joyce Nyeche, who represented the Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, expressed deep appreciation to the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board for renovating the facility and initiating the free medical outreach.

She described health as the true foundation of wealth, stressing that without good health, economic prosperity is meaningless. Dr. Joyce Nyeche urged residents of Woji to take responsibility for the maintenance of the facility, emphasizing that government alone cannot sustain public infrastructure without community ownership.

Calling on the people to protect the health centre, she warned against the attitude of neglecting government property, noting that facilities deteriorate faster when users fail to take responsibility.

She also assured the community that concerns raised over the poor state of the access road to the facility would be conveyed to the council chairman, whom she described as a committed and proactive leader.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of RSPHCMB, Dr. Adele Chituru, recounted the poor state of the Woji health facility when the board assumed office about six months ago. According to him, the centre was run-down, non-functional, and demoralizing for staff, recording very low patient turnout despite serving a densely populated area.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Dawari George, said the commissioning was the outcome of careful planning and strategic prioritization of high-density communities across the state. He stressed that primary health care is community-centered and can only be effective with active community participation.

Dr. Dawari George lamented the long-standing neglect of public facilities due to poor maintenance culture, stating that the current board is determined to ensure continuous and deliberate upgrade of similar facilties across the State.

Representing the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Justina Jumbo, described the event as a major milestone in the state government’s commitment to strengthening primary health care as the foundation of an inclusive and resilient health system.

She emphasized that while government can build and equip facilities, their sustainability depends largely on strong maintenance culture, responsible usage, and community ownership.

She called on health workers, community leaders, and residents to jointly protect the facility from vandalism, misuse, and neglect. She thereafter formally commissioned the renovated MPHC Woji and declared the two-day free medical outreach officially flagged off.

Speaking on behalf of the Woji community, the Prime Minister of Woji, Dr. Tony Chuku, expressed gratitude to the Rivers State Government and the RSPHCMB for the intervention, describing the renovated facility as a major boost to community health care.
