KICK OF THE MONTH:
Unleash the Power: The Roundhouse Kick

The roundhouse kick (or dollyeo chagi) is a staple in martial arts for a reason: it's versatile, devastating, and looks incredible on film. Whether you're training for fitness or self-defense, mastering this kick is a total game-changer.

________________________________________
Why It’s a Must-Have in Your Arsenal

• Massive Power Generation: By rotating your hips and pivoting your standing foot, you turn your entire body weight into a whip.

• Versatile Targets: You can strike the legs (low), ribs (mid), or head (high) with the same basic chambering motion.

• Long Range: It allows you to strike an opponent from a distance where they can't easily reach you with punches.

• Deceptive Speed: A well-executed roundhouse can be "hidden" behind a jab or delivered so quickly the opponent can't react in time.

---------------------------
Common Mistakes to Avoid ❌

1. Forgetting the Pivot: If your standing foot stays planted forward, you’ll strain your knee and lose about 50% of your power. Pivot that heel!

2. Slapping with the Toes: Striking with the toes is a one-way ticket to a broken foot. Aim to impact with the lower part of your shin or the instep of the foot.

3. Dropping Your Hands: Many people drop their guard to balance. Keep those hands up to protect your face from a counter-punch!

4. "Telegraphing" the Move: Don't wind up your upper body before the kick. The movement should start from the floor and the hips.

---------------------------
How to Maximize "Deadly" Potential

To turn a standard kick into a fight-finisher, focus on these three elements:

• Follow-Through: Don't just hit the target; try to kick through it. Imagine your shin landing several inches inside the opponent's body.

• The "Hip Turn": At the moment of impact, your hip should be rolled over completely so your laces/shin are horizontal to the floor. This adds the weight of your torso to the strike.

• Precision Timing: The most effective kick is the one they don't see coming. Set it up with a distraction—like a quick flicking jab—to draw their eyes up before you go for the ribs or legs.

Chukwumerije Vows to Unearth New Talents for Abia Taekwondo – THISDAYLIVE 04/05/2026

Chukwumerije Heads Abia Taekwondo, Vows to Unearth Talents

Olympic bronze medallist and former African champion, Chika Chukwumerije, has taken on a new role as chairman of the Abia Taekwondo Association. His appointment, alongside a 13-member board, was formalized last week by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, with a clear mandate: to elevate Abia into the ranks of Nigeria’s leading sporting states.

Delivering the vote of thanks on behalf of the association, Chukwumerije expressed gratitude to the state leadership for entrusting them with the responsibility of driving sports development. He pledged to harness Abia’s unique strengths to identify and nurture young talents, particularly from schools, with the vision of grooming them into world-class athletes.

“I want to sincerely thank our governor and his team, and most importantly His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, for this honour,” he said. “We promise to give our best to make Abia one of the best sporting states in the country. Our focus will be on discovering talents at the grassroots, grooming them at home, and turning them into world beaters.”

Chukwumerije also highlighted the broader impact of sports on society, stressing its transformative power. He pointed to Aba’s industrial capacity as a potential hub for producing sporting equipment, not only for Abia but for other states across Nigeria. “Abia has the talents, and we can help our young ones make a living from sports. With Aba, we can produce all the sporting equipment we need and even sell to other states,” he noted.

Looking ahead, he assured sponsors and stakeholders of the association’s commitment to collaboration, promising that within four years, Abia would produce not just local champions but athletes capable of shining on the global stage.

The newly inaugurated board includes Dr. Innocent Anucha as Vice Chairman, with members Okechi Onwuka, Christian Onyinyechi, Glory Ezema Oluchi, Emelike Chinenye (ACP), Christian Nnaukwu, Obioma Akomas, Ohia Ifeanyi, Charles Enakhaze, China Orji, Arua Ogbonnaya, and Olekanma Orji serving as secretary.
