The State Working Committee of the Labour Party is proud and delighted to formally announce and celebrate the official defection of Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, the distinguished Member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, into our great party.

This historic and strategic development marks a significant milestone in the growing political reawakening across Abia State and Nigeria at large. Hon. Ikwechegh’s decision to join the Labour Party reflects a deepening commitment to people-centered governance, transparency, accountability, and the progressive ideals that define our movement.

On Tuesday, Hon. Ikwechegh was warmly received by the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, whose transformational leadership continues to attract credible leaders and patriots into the Labour Party family. The meeting symbolized unity of purpose and a shared determination to accelerate development, restore public trust, and consolidate democratic gains for the people of Abia.

The defection follows Hon. Ikwechegh’s formal resignation from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), communicated in a letter dated 28 February 2026 and addressed to his ward chairman. In the letter, he expressed appreciation to APGA for the opportunity to serve while emphasizing the need to align with a political platform that best reflects his vision for inclusive representation, economic revitalization, and sustainable development.

Significantly, his defection comes on the heels of the resignation of over 90 party executives across Aba North and Aba South, underscoring a broad-based political realignment driven by conviction, grassroots consensus, and confidence in the Labour Party’s progressive agenda.

Among the notable leaders who tendered their resignations are Hon. Edwin Ehuchie (Bongos), Youth Leader, Aba North LGA; Mr. Michael Ada, Woman Leader, Aba South; Mrs. Juliana Duruaku, Woman Leader, Aba North; Magnus Onyenaucheya, Vice Chairman, Ariaria Ward 9; Mercy Onyeahala, Woman Leader, Ariaria Ward 9; Hon. Deacon Emeka Okozie, Deputy Chairman, Aba North LGA; Mr. Chigozie Alozie, Youth Leader, Ward 12 Aba North; Mr. Ibe Osuagwu, Chairman, Ariaria Ward 9; Hon. Victor Urum, Aba North LGA Chairman; and Chisom Amah, Chairman, Eziama Ward 1, Aba North, among many others.

Their collective decision signals a powerful endorsement of the Labour Party’s leadership and its unwavering commitment to rebuilding institutions, empowering small businesses, revitalizing Aba’s industrial base, and delivering purposeful representation at the National Assembly.

The State Working Committee assures Hon. Ikwechegh and all incoming members of full integration, cooperation, and support as we work together to deepen democratic governance and expand opportunities for our people. We are confident that his experience, legislative insight, and strong grassroots connection will further strengthen our caucus in the House of Representatives and amplify the voice of Aba North and Aba South at the national level.

The Labour Party remains open to all well-meaning Nigerians who share our vision of justice, equity, and people-driven leadership. Together, we will continue to build a formidable political movement anchored on integrity, performance, and service to the people.

A new chapter has begun for Aba North/Aba South. A stronger, united, and forward-looking Labour Party stands ready to deliver.

Forward ever backward never

NENADI USMAN - LED NWC TAKES OVER PARTY SECRETARIAT

By Mazi Chidiebere Okoro

Nenadi Usman-Led NWC Takes Full Control of Labour Party Secretariat, Moves to Restructure Rivers Chapter as Abia Deputy Governor Signals Openness to Tinubu

In a dramatic turn of events that could reshape the internal power dynamics of the Labour Party (LP), the Nenadi Usman-led National Working Committee (NWC) has officially assumed control of the party’s national secretariat, signaling what many political observers describe as a decisive consolidation of authority within the party’s national leadership.

The takeover, which unfolded amid heightened expectations of structural reforms within the party, marks a new chapter in the Labour Party’s ongoing efforts to reposition itself as a formidable force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape. Party insiders say the move is aimed at restoring order, strengthening institutional processes, and reinforcing the authority of the national leadership following months of internal tensions and factional disputes.

19-Member Interim Committee for Rivers State

In one of its first major decisions, the Nenadi Usman-led NWC announced the appointment of a 19-member interim committee tasked with rebuilding and stabilizing the party’s structure in Rivers State. The development comes against the backdrop of persistent internal crises that have weakened the party’s cohesion in the oil-rich state.

According to party officials, the interim committee has been given a clear mandate: reconcile aggrieved members, reorganize grassroots structures, and lay the groundwork for credible congresses that will produce a unified and legitimate state executive. Rivers State, considered a strategic political battleground, is seen as critical to the party’s long-term national ambitions.

Political analysts suggest that this intervention underscores the NWC’s determination to assert control in key states and prevent internal fragmentation from undermining the party’s electoral prospects ahead of future contests.

Abia Deputy Governor Emetu: “We’re Ready to Welcome Tinubu”

In a separate but politically significant development, Abia State Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu has stirred conversation across party lines by declaring that the Labour Party would be ready to welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should he decide to join its ranks.

Emetu’s remark, widely interpreted as both strategic and symbolic, reflects the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political alliances. While President Tinubu currently leads the All Progressives Congress (APC), the deputy governor’s statement highlights what he described as the Labour Party’s “open-door philosophy” and its readiness to accommodate leaders committed to national development.

Though largely speculative, the comment has ignited debate within political circles about potential realignments and cross-party collaborations as Nigeria’s democracy continues to evolve. Some see it as a bold expression of confidence in the Labour Party’s growing influence, while others interpret it as a subtle political message aimed at redefining inter-party relationships.

A Party at a Crossroads

Taken together, these developments suggest that the Labour Party is entering a phase of strategic recalibration. The consolidation of leadership at the national secretariat, the restructuring of the Rivers State chapter, and the broader rhetoric of political inclusivity all point to a party seeking stability, expansion, and greater national relevance.

As Nigeria’s political terrain remains dynamic and unpredictable, the coming weeks will likely reveal whether these moves strengthen the Labour Party’s internal cohesion or trigger fresh debates within its ranks. What is clear, however, is that the Nenadi Usman-led NWC is moving assertively to redefine the party’s direction—and the ripple effects could be felt far beyond its secretariat walls.

PRESS STATEMENT

“YOU CANNOT TAKE POWER THROUGH THE BACK DOOR” – ABIA LABOUR PARTY WARNS APC

The Abia State Chapter of the Labour Party has raised serious concerns over reports that some individuals, allegedly acting in the name of the All Progressives Congress (APC), are demanding Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) details and National Identification Numbers (NIN) from citizens across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State under the guise of party e-registration.

Information available to the party indicates that these illegal activities are being carried out during so-called “town hall meetings,” where sensitive personal information of citizens is either copied or photographed.

The State Chairman of the Labour Party, Abia State, wishes to state clearly and unequivocally that no individual, group, or political party has the right to demand or collect PVC or NIN details from citizens in this manner. Such actions are illegal, unsafe, and a gross violation of electoral laws, data protection regulations, and established democratic processes.

The party particularly draws the attention of Ndi Abia, especially residents of Agbagwu, Ugwuakuma and Arochukwu Local Government Area, where a suspect identified as Kelechi Henry Nwafor, from Ibom Village, Ndi Okwu Compound, Arochukwu, has been arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Police.

The suspect reportedly confessed at the Arochukwu Divisional Police Headquarters that he was sent to Arochukwu by Hon. Paul Ikonne and Hon. Mark Ukoh to carry out this illegal operation.

The Labour Party is further alarmed by reports that similar activities are still being planned in Bende Local Government Area, under the false pretense of registration, in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the interests and rights of the masses.

The Labour Party therefore strongly advises the general public to:

Remain vigilant

Avoid such unauthorized gatherings

Refuse to share personal information such as PVC or NIN with unverified individuals or groups

Citizens are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies. The Labour Party remains committed to protecting the rights, safety, and democratic freedoms of all Abians.

You cannot take power through the back doo

State Party Chairman
