OBEAKPU PALACE MOURNS AIG KANAYO UZUEGBU

_HRM Eze L.A.U. Nwaozor: “What have we done to deserve this at the prime of life?”_

His Royal Majesty, Eze L.A.U. Nwaozor, traditional ruler of Obeakpu Autonomous Community has expressed profound grief over the passing of his subject Assistant Inspector-General of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu.

The late AIG, a distinguished son of Umuaka served Nigeria with distinction as Commissioner of Police in Enugu and Edo States, and as AIG Zone 9, Umuahia, before his death on Saturday after a courageous battle with cancer.

In an emotional condolence message released through the OBEAKPU community forum and obtained by umuaka news24 HRM Eze Nwaozor mourned the loss as a personal and communal tragedy:

> _“Mhhhh!, Mhhhh!!, Mhhh!!!
> Yet another devastating decapitation in the force headquarters of Obeakpu. How are the mighty fallen? Oh God, why is this happening to us, repeatedly at the prime of life? What have we done to deserve this? Does a lone palm fruit get lost in the fire? God have mercy! Lord God have mercy on Obeakpu!! Oh God of heaven and earth, have mercy!!!
> May Kanayo’s soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen!!!”_

For Eze Nwaozor, AIG Uzuegbu was more than a senior police officer. He was a subject of the Obeakpu stool who carried the honor of his community to national service. His rise from Cadet ASP in 1992 to the rank of AIG was in the monarch’s view a crown upon Obeakpu.

The Eze’s reference to the Igbo proverb — _“Does a lone palm fruit get lost in the fire?”underscores the collective pain. A palm fruit of such value the monarch implies should not perish alone its loss burns the entire community.

In honor of their highest-ranking officer umuaka news24 was informed that Obeakpu WhatsApp groups have adopted AIG Uzuegbu’s portrait as their profile picture during the mourning period.

HRM Eze L.A.U. Nwaozor prays for the repose of his subject’s soul and for God’s comfort upon Obeakpu, Umuaka and the Nigeria Police Force.

_May the soul of AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu rest in perfect peace. Amen._

The Nigerian Civil War 1967-1970: What Happened in Biafra

Fifty-nine years after the Republic of Biafra was declared on May 30, 1967, the Nigerian Civil War remains one of the most consequential conflicts in the country’s history. The 30-month war shaped Nigeria’s politics, economy, and national unity.

From Independence to Crisis
Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960 as a federation of regions dominated by three major ethnic groups: Hausa-Fulani in the North, Yoruba in the West, and Igbo in the East, alongside over 250 minority groups.

Political disputes over elections, census figures, and regional power, combined with military coups in January and July 1966, destabilized the new nation. The July 1966 counter-coup and subsequent violence led to the deaths of thousands of Igbo civilians in northern Nigeria and the mass return of about 1-2 million Igbo to the Eastern Region.

Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, military governor of the Eastern Region, declared independence for the region as the “Republic of Biafra” on May 30, 1967. The federal government under Gen. Yakubu Gowon rejected secession and launched military operations on July 6, 1967.

The war progressed through three phases. Biafran forces made early territorial gains in 1967. From 1968 onward, federal forces enforced a blockade that cut Biafra off from the sea and most supply routes. The conflict became a war of attrition. Biafra surrendered on January 15, 1970, after Ojukwu fled to Côte d’Ivoire. Gowon declared “no victor, no vanquished” and launched a post-war “3R” program: Reconciliation, Reconstruction, Rehabilitation.

Most historians estimate 1-3 million deaths, with civilians accounting for the majority due to famine and disease. The federal blockade disrupted food and medical supplies to the secessionist region. Images of severe malnutrition among children brought international relief agencies including the International Committee of the Red Cross and Oxfam into the conflict zone.

Only five countries formally recognized Biafra during the war: Gabon, Haiti, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, and Zambia. Most other nations, including the UK, US, and USSR, backed the Nigerian federal government.

The war cemented the role of the military in Nigerian politics for decades after 1970 and influenced how oil revenue from the Niger Delta was managed. May 30 is observed annually by some groups as a day of remembrance for those who died between 1967 and 1970.

The characterization of the conflict is still debated. The Nigerian government and most international bodies refer to it as a civil war. Some scholars and advocacy groups describe the mass civilian deaths from starvation as genocide, a label Nigeria disputes.
