National Sports Festival: Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Inspects Facilities, Reassures of World-class, Memorable Games

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, says his administration is committed to delivering a world-class and memorable 23rd National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged “Coal City Games.”

Mbah also assured of the readiness of all the facilities ahead of the Games slated for 27th November to 11th December 2026.

The Governor spoke at the weekend during a tour of Awgu Games Village, one of the venues slated for the NSF, for a firsthand assessment of the quality and speed of work at the site, stressing that the Awgu Games Village, which had long been abandoned, would emerge as a world-standard sports facility in less than two months.

“Recall the commitment we made as a government that we are going to make the 23rd National Sports Festival one of the most memorable festivals in the history of the event.

“So, the construction of a one-thousand-capacity-bed hostel is ongoing. We also have the construction of outdoor and indoor courts ongoing.

“A standard FIFA pitch is also under construction. We equally have an eight-lane track, and these are all world-class.

“I have to come because we have a very tight timeline and this project must be ready. It means that in less than two months, this place will no longer be a construction site. It will become a world-class Games Village. In less than two months, what you will have here is a proper venue that will be hosting contingents from across the country,” he said.

Mbah, however, added that his administration was not just building for the NSF, noting that the massive development of sports facilities was in line with his campaign promise to make Enugu State the preferred destination for investment, business, tourism, and for living.

He said the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium was already being upgraded into a FIFA-standard stadium, describing sports as not just recreation and a veritable tool for social cohesion, but also big business if well harnessed.

“As you also know, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is receiving serious attention. We are upgrading it to a world-class standard.

“These facilities will be ready. I have personally committed to the team from the National Sports Commission, who came on a monitoring visit, that we are not interested in shifting the date. The dates are already fixed for the 23rd National Sports Festival.

“We are carrying out a comprehensive reconstruction and transformation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. We are installing a new FIFA-standard football pitch and a new athletics track. We are rehabilitating and reinstalling the spectator seats, replacing damaged ones, and constructing a new roofing and canopy system to cover the entire spectator stands.

“We are upgrading the VIP and VVIP stands, the players’ changing rooms and other associated facilities. We are upgrading the stadium gates and access-control system to an electronic system, installing two new LCD scoreboards, perimeter LED display boards and protective perimeter mesh fencing around the main bowl. The floodlighting system and other electrical and mechanical services are also being upgraded.

“We are also cladding the external areas of the stadium to give the entire complex a new, modern architectural appearance and aesthetic ambience. There are extensive finishing works, external works, landscaping and improvements to the access and general environment of the stadium.

“Beyond the main stadium bowl, we are building a new Olympic-size swimming pool with its associated facilities. We are transforming the Indoor Sports Hall and constructing and upgrading indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, including volleyball, basketball, squash and other sports, together with their pavilions and supporting facilities.

“So, what we are doing is not simply renovating a football stadium. We are transforming the entire Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium complex into a modern, world-class multi-sport facility.

“Therefore, for us, it is not just about the efficiency of organising the festival. We are equally interested in the Enugu experience of the athletes. We are interested in their accommodation, their logistics and their overall experience, and we are putting everything in place to make this festival a truly memorable event for the contingents, officials and everyone involved in the management of the Games.”

*Enugu South Council Chairman Celebrates Teachers, Commends Their Sacrifices on World Teachers’ Day*

The Executive Chairman of Enugu South Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Caleb Onyema Ani, FCPA, has extended warm greetings and appreciation to teachers across Enugu South, Enugu State and Nigeria as the world marks World Teachers’ Day 2026.

In a message to commemorate the day, the Chairman described teachers as builders of minds, character and the future of society, noting that their influence goes far beyond the classroom.

Dr. Ani acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of teachers who continue to nurture young minds, impart knowledge and prepare children and young people for the responsibilities ahead. He stressed that no meaningful development can be sustained without a strong and respected teaching profession.

This year’s theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” according to the Chairman, is a timely reminder of the need to continually support, protect and value those entrusted with educating the next generation.

He further called for greater recognition of the work teachers do, stressing that improving education requires not only infrastructure and learning materials but also motivated, respected, and well-supported teachers.

“Teachers carry one of the greatest responsibilities in our society. Every professional, leader and expert was once taught by a teacher. Their contribution to our communities and to the future of our children can never be underestimated,” the Chairman said.

He assured teachers in Enugu South of the commitment of his administration to initiatives that promote quality education and create a better environment for children to learn and thrive.

The Chairman also encouraged teachers to remain committed to their calling, describing their work as a lasting investment in the future of the nation.

“On this special day, I celebrate every teacher whose patience, dedication and commitment continue to make a difference in the lives of our children. We appreciate you, we value you, and we thank you for helping to shape our future.”

Enugu Govt, Ani Launch NIN Drive In Enugu South

The Enugu State Government says it will bear the cost of National Identification Number (NIN) registration for residents for seven days, from Oct. 1 to Oct. 7, 2026, to enable indigent and vulnerable citizens access free healthcare and other government benefits.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr Malachy Agbo, announced this on Friday during a sensitisation and awareness visit to Enugu South Local Government Area (LGA), held at the council headquarters in Uwani, Enugu.

Agbo said the initiative was approved by Gov. Peter Mbah as part of efforts to drive massive NIN registration and enrolment in the National Health Insurance Scheme across the state’s 17 LGAs.

He said possession of a NIN was a prerequisite for accessing the Federal Government’s Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) and free healthcare services under the programme.

According to him, the beneficiaries include children aged zero to five years, elderly citizens aged 65 years and above, pregnant women, persons living with disabilities and people living in abject poverty.

“The Governor’s wish is for all Enugu citizens to acquire their NIN.

“To this end, officials have been designated in every political ward and primary health centre to facilitate enrolment into the National Health Scheme,” Agbo said.

He said the sensitisation campaign was being taken to all 17 LGAs to ensure that a large number of indigent residents benefited from government programmes and other democratic dividends.

Agbo also congratulated the Executive Chairman of Enugu South LGA, Dr Caleb Onyema Ani, on his re-election, describing his return to office as a reflection of his performance during his first tenure.

He said Ani “deserved to return” based on his record of service to the people.

Representing the Secretary of the Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage (ENS-UHC), Chiamaka Okoye, said the sensitisation campaign became necessary because of the state’s low level of enrolment in the national health insurance programme.

Okoye said Enugu was currently rated last in the South-East and fourth from the bottom nationally among states benefiting from the National Health Insurance Scheme and the BHCPF.

“We are here to change this narrative. Unlike the first phase (0.1), this second phase (0.2) of the programme mandates that every beneficiary must possess a NIN to access the fund and the health insurance scheme,” she said.

She urged residents to take advantage of the window provided by the state government to register for NIN and enrol in the health insurance scheme.

Okoye also clarified that access to the scheme was not limited to primary healthcare or the vulnerable categories listed by the government.

She said both primary and secondary healthcare services were available, adding that other residents could also participate by paying an annual token of N12,000.

During an interactive session, the councillor representing Ward 7, Hon. Emefesi Chijioke, raised concerns about the financial implications of correcting errors in NIN registration data.

Chief Christian Igwe, Chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu South Chapter, also recounted his experience of spending a substantial amount to correct wrong information entered during the registration of one of his children.

Igwe appealed to the government to ensure that officials handling the exercise were attentive and careful to minimise errors.

Responding to the concerns, Agbo urged residents to carefully verify their personal information before it was submitted and printed.

“Anybody registering should be careful not to make mistakes with the data given to the NIN officials. People should recheck the data keyed into the computer before sending and printing,” he said.

Agbo explained that charges for correcting NIN data were not determined by the Ministry of Information but were the statutory responsibility of NIN officials to disclose to applicants.

He advised residents to prioritise accuracy during registration to avoid unnecessary financial burdens.

Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Enugu South LGA, Dr Caleb Ani, expressed gratitude to Gov. Mbah and Agbo for taking the sensitisation campaign to the council.

Ani said the local government had already commenced its own NIN and health insurance sensitisation and enrolment campaign before the state government’s intervention.

“We are delighted and deeply appreciative of this visit. As a Local Government, we did not wait; we have already started this programme on our own because we understand that health is wealth and that without identity, our people cannot access federal benefits. Your coming today is a massive boost to what we have been doing,” he said.

The chairman said the governor’s decision to foot the NIN registration bill for seven days would greatly accelerate the enrolment drive.

He pledged the cooperation of the council, traditional institutions, town unions and ward councillors to ensure that no eligible resident was excluded.

“This is what inclusive governance looks like. Governor Mbah has shown that he is a Governor for all, both the rich and the poor. On behalf of the good people of Enugu South, I pledge our full support.

“We will mobilize our people from ward to ward, from community to community, to ensure massive enrollment. We will work hand-in-hand with your officials,” Ani said.

The sensitisation team comprised officials of the Enugu State Ministry of Information and Communication, Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) and ENS-UHC.

The delegation was received at the council headquarters by Ani, his deputy, Hon. Anthony Egbo, Council Secretary, Barr. Kenneth Inyama, traditional rulers, ward councillors and other stakeholders.

Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to 17 New LG Council Chairmen: No Honeymoon, Work to Eradicate Poverty

Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, has charged the newly sworn-in chairmen of the 17 local government areas in the state to immediately commence work, stressing that the local government system is not a passive arm of government in the state, but an active partner in the development agenda of the state government.

Mbah gave the charge following the swearing-in of the newly elected local government chairmen and vice chairmen at Government House, Enugu.

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) had on Sunday declared candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winners of the 17 chairmanship and 260 councillorship seats in the council election conducted across the state on Saturday.

The chairmen and their council areas are John Ogbodo, Nkanu West; Mike Ogbuekwe, Nkanu East; Ugochukwu Nwanjoku, Aninri; Jude Chinedu Asogwa, Nsukka; Caleb Ani, Enugu South; Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, Igboeze South; Brendan Emeka Ani, Isi-Uzo; Ibenaku Onoh, Enugu North; Martin Amadieze, Igbo-Etiti; and Innocent Ezeoha, Udenu.

Others are Chris Onyekachi Simon, Igboeze North; Chijioke Ezeugwu, Uzo Uwani; Hyginus Agu, Udi; Uche Okolo, Awgu; Beloved Dan Anike, Enugu East; Greg Anyaegbudike, Oji River; and Vitals Ndu, Ezeagu.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony the governor reminded the chairmen that the promises they made during the electioneering period had now become obligations to the electorate, describing the relationship between elected officials and the people as a social contract.

“In the last few weeks, you went around the communities, meeting our people, soliciting their votes. They have done you that honour of giving you their mandates to serve them and it is now your turn to discharge those commitments.

“So, what you have just done here today is beyond symbolism. It is quite significant because it means that you have just sealed the social contract you have with the people.

“I would, therefore, imagine that you are going to hit the ground running because there is really no honeymoon when we have quite a whole number of tasks ahead of us at this point,” he asserted.

Mbah stressed the strategic importance of the local government system, describing it as the tier of government closest to the people and a critical partner in the state's development agenda.

He said the government's objective to eradicate poverty could not be achieved without addressing poverty in rural communities where there is prevalence of poverty.

He, therefore, urged them to align their programmes and priorities with the broader development agenda of his administration, particularly in education, healthcare, sanitation, agriculture and poverty reduction.

Mbah further charged them to make themselves accessible and accountable to the people.

“You must be accessible to the people that elected you. You must be accountable to them. And you must spend their resources responsibly,” Mbah stressed.

On education, the governor urged the chairmen to go beyond physical infrastructure and focus on measurable outcomes, including literacy, numeracy and school enrolment.

“It should equally interest you to have the statistics of those kids that are of school age that are not in school in your local government and to be actively working to ensure that you have zero — and I mean zero — not even one child who is of school age should be out of school,” he said.

He urged the chairmen to make the welfare of poor and vulnerable residents a priority, saying poverty eradication would require deliberate measurement of progress rather than mere political declarations.

Responding on behalf of the chairmen, the re-elected Chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area and Deputy Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Enugu State, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, expressed appreciation to the people of the state and Mbah for giving them the privilege to serve.

He said some of them, who had previously served under Mbah, had acquired valuable experience during the period and pledged the commitment of the chairmen to good governance and expressed confidence that, at the end of their tenure, they would be proud of their contributions to the development of Enugu State.

“For those of us that were privileged to serve under your leadership in the past two years, I can tell you that the knowledge gained, experience acquired cannot be measured in words.

“We want to sincerely commit and recommit ourselves to the course of your good governance so that at the end of our tenure, we will be proud that Enugu State gave you the opportunity to groom us to what we are actually becoming,” he said.

17 LGA Chairmen inaugurated

Swearing in ceremony of the 17 Local Government Council chairmen and their deputy elected during the September 26 council elections by Gov. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Charging them to hit the ground running, delivering people-centered projects and programmes in line with their campaign promises.

Mbah also directed the new chairmen to relocate to their council areas, as the era when council chairmen lived in townships and far from their people were over, urging them to key into his government’s Smart Green School, rural infrastructural projects, agriculture, among others, to fight crime and create opportunities and brighter future for Enugu children and youth.
