THE KEY NOTE SPEECH BY THE INCOMING SENATOR AT THE OGBIA BROTHERHOOD YOUTH DAY...
OGBIA BROTHERHOOD YOUTH COUNCIL WORLDWIDE: OGBIA YOUTH DAY/ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Guest Speaker: Mr. Goodnews Young Baraburu Topic: “The Ogbia Youths and the Brotherhood: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”
Preamble:I seek the pleasure of kindness to reciprocate your deep kindness of granting me dignity and honour of warm participation and interesting stimulation of transaction of captivating and flourishing ideas and interrogation of thoughts, intrigues, expectations and the opportunities abounding to the Ogbia Youths in this auspicious day of gladness and celebration. Indeed, I descend into the spacious arena of pure gratitude to pour acknowledgement and esteem to the national president of this great Ogbia Youth body Comrade Bright Ewa and his intelligent and energetic youth army in this transformative leadership hub.
Man is the most advanced form of life on earth, and he is the subject of social and historical activity and culture. “Man is a complex animal; infact, the question as to the nature of man has been one the fundamental problems in the history of philosophical thought and intellectual activities” (Hill, 1957:8). Man connotes the spirit, soul and body, and man has the capacity to relate among its component parts to bring forth life, and in turn relates with its own self, with the prevailing environment around himself and with other men in order to secure satisfaction, happiness, and ultimately to fulfill destiny.
“Man is seen as a metaphysical being, an animal that nourishes its life on transcendental things since he is the only animal that asks and knows the why and how of things” (Azenabor, 2010:91). Man is a spiritual, material and rational being. He is characterized with spirit, consciousness, mind, matter, rationality, imagination, memory and volition. Man is not self sufficient but his sufficiency is in human association to produce the highest good in a man. Within the context of space and time, the human association has produced the highest good in man. Like the universal man, the association of the Ogbia people has produced the Ogbia Brotherhood which is the highest good in Ogbia Kingdom.
Interestingly, the flourishing and productive offsprings (Ogbia Youths) of the Ogbia man bear a rich and enduring understanding that the effective production and deployment of qualitative and growing thoughts is a sine qua non to a transformative life because no people can live above the height and quality of their thoughts. The quality and progress of knowledge is direct and equal to the quality and progress of lifestyle and transformation. James Allen in his philosophical declaration said, “the world of thought is the other half of the world of things” (2021:508). That means that the world of knowledge gives birth to the world of transformation, and therefore, the lack of knowledge is a highway to disaster and wickedness on both humanity and society. In the light of this amazingly revealing understanding, all qualitative and progressive change and development in human and societal transformation is a consequent of knowledge, and this abundantly explains the excellent and preeminence of this resounding classic public discourse of the Ogbia youth day and anniversary celebration.
It is a gratifying amazement that the fundamental industry that produces knowledge is the industry of the human heart. The production of the knowledge of good and the knowledge of evil grows ceaselessly in the same human heart with clear distinction of the knowledge of good from the knowledge of evil. Both the knowledge of transformation and knowledge of destruction come from the treasure of the human heart in a fierce competitive fashion, hence, parents, teachers and instructors deliberately and diligently labour to train students and people in the knowledge of transformation in both informal and formal educational institutions, yet, the knowledge of evil without the privilege of formal training grows wild like natural grasses. May I charge the Ogbia youths to seize the industry of their hearts in the sound disposition of knowledge of transformation and excellence, for John Locke advised that “no man’s knowledge here can go beyond his experience.” Every change will be resisted and every transformation will be opposed. Guide yourself with the caution of John Locke that “new opinions are always suspected, and usually opposed, without any other reason but because they are not already common”. Any angel in the Ogbia Kingdom is only looking for you to be used as an agent of transformation for they are outside the obligation of usage directly for transformation.
Ogbia Youths and the Brotherhood in Glory
The crowing fame, praise and honour that had dignified and given splendor to the Ogbia Kingdom in the sweet blessedness of the past was a great unity of the rich benevolence of God, beautifully situated under the auspices of the rigorous progressive labour of our founding fathers. Labour is life, and the mother of production, and there is no life without labour, for our great and treasureable Ogbia cultural heritage was the agonizing pain and sweat of our heroes in memories. A recurring pain on our collective psychic is the lack of a robust history that keeps plaguing our sensibilities, and pouring nauseating pangs on our gloriously blessed tomorrow. This intimidating challenge of a rich and rewarding history, indeed, must be the noble occupation of the Ogbia youths. Suffice to avoid gainsaying the inevitability prerequisite that the Ogbia youths, in their delicate and intriguing journey, must cultivate, nurture and nourish a bountiful and glitzy history to situate the coming generation in glamour.
History, in its kindness and expectancy has revealed that the “Ogbia aborigines” were the original settlers in the Ogbia Kingdom between the 9th-13th century, while the immigrants from the Benin Kingdom called “Ogbeyan” came between 13th and 15th Century (Okpara, 2013:107). However, between 14th and 18th centuries, the challenging multiple and complex different cultures synchronized through the dynamism of cultural evolution to produce this contemporary brand of Ogbia culture, with dotted dialectical variations that expressed our distinctiveness. Between 1400 and 1900, life was not pleasant and admirable in the Ogbia enclave. Absent of western education and common authority opened the floodgate of migratory demands and confusions, settlement intricacies and persuasions, acculturation process between Ogbia aborigines and Benin immigrants, oppressive and domineering theory of “might is right,” attacks and invasion practices, hostage taking and wars, among others, were contributory to the lack of a robust history.
Ogbia autonomous settlements and communities were independent in their socio-economic and political interactions and decisions, mobilization and integration of values, resolutions and adjudication of conflicts and defense of lives, properties and livelihoods. Bold and fearless men, warriors and war lords of individual settlements and communities were promptly mobilized to tackle social disorder, counter external attacks and invasions inorder to protect lives and properties because of the ruling theory that “might is right”. The demands and persuasions of topography, climate and vegetation largely encouraged the Ogbia people to be predominantly agrarian and deeply involved in food production like cocoyam, plantain, cassava and fishing among others. Men were involved in palm cutting, canoe carving, hunting and trapping of animals and lumbering among others, but all these human activities took place in very chaotic and uncertain atmosphere.
On the 9th of June, 1890, Rev. George Igabu Amangala was born in the midst of those terribly challenging and debilitating socio-economic and political pressures and embarrassing uncertainties; but in amazement, he rose to confront the ugly quagmire and made a fortune for the Ogbia people through the formation of Ogbia Brotherhood in 1940. He became the first distinguished patriot of the Ogbia Brotherhood and agent of transformation with the institution of Ogbia Brotherhood Scholarship Scheme. He ascended the prestigious throne of the Obanobhan of Ogbia Kingdom as a pioneer, and in a collaborative synergy with other Ogbia compatriots, reengineered the individual Ogbia settlements and communities into a unique, enviable and formidable Ogbia Kingdom. This glorious feat redefined and added beauty and quality to the realities and values of the individuals, processes, institutions, collective perception and understanding that ultimately engendered expressible and dramatized love, oneness, unity, peace, integrity, prosperity and happiness among the Ogbia citizenry.
Chief Melford Obiene Okilo, Chief Ranami, Abah, Chief Maclean Ngo Harold Dangosu, Chief I. D. Rex Ogbuku, Chief Maddocks Ogbogi, Chief M. C. Egirani, Chief B. A. Isiki, Hon. Justice Emmanuel Joel Igoniwari, among others of blessed memories; were all uniquely bonded by the Ogbia spirit that produced the glorious fruitage of the strength of governance from the philosophy of “all for each and each for all.” Greatness and strength in the collectivity produced abounding bountifulness as the Ogbia Brotherhood pioneered the establishment of primary and secondary schools, health technology, hospitals, erosion control, canalization, free electricity, roads, Ogbia town and its development, among others in Ogbia Communities; and the general practicable culture of love, oneness, peace and peaceful coexistence, unity, Brotherhood and progress among the Ogbia people in their glorious days.Sequel to the excellency of power and deep benevolence of God, an authoritative fountain of fortune overshadowed the Ogbia Kingdom that flowered with splendiferous favour upon the people of the Ogbia extraction in the glorious discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities in 1956. Again, in 1979, the rich kindness of Heaven came down upon the Ogbia people as Chief Melford Obiene Okilo became the first civilian Governor of old Rivers State. In a resounding renaissance of glory and history beyond the contemplation of the Nigerian thought, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from Ogbia Kingdom became the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the 5th of May, 2010. First President of the Niger Delta geopolitical region and first well read president of the Nigerian State. How deeply amazing is the exceedingly extraordinary love of God upon the Ogbia Kingdom! The Ogbia Youths and the Brotherhood in Contemporary times and tomorrow According to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, “man was born free, and everywhere he is in chains.” It is interesting and needful to honour the philosophical caution of Bertrand Russell that, “the secret of happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible, horrible, horrible.” What you do not confront, you cannot change. Victory is only the fruit of confrontation. The world is a warfare and life is the battlefield. The existence of a problem is merely the announcement for a needed solution. Ogbia youths must rise up to confront the embarrassing socio-economic and political realities in our living experiences and livelihoods. Ogbia Brotherhood youth body must mobilize all the Ogbia youths to fiercely fight against failure, disappointment, pain, sufferings, diseases, underdevelopment and agonizing poverty which are our real enemies, inorder to redefine our collective destiny in bliss and fulfillment. Please, may I beg you to stop the doctrine of lamentation and engage your mental and physical energies for accomplishments. For the spirit of Ogbia Brotherhood is derived from the philosophical dictum of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels that opined, “from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.” This is the eloquent summary of “all for each and each for all”. Indeed, the Ogbia youths must run with this philosophical transformatory enlightenment and flavor inorder to recreate the spirit of happiness and progress.
A recultivation and nourishment of the Ogbia socio-cultural heritage is fundamental to build and sustain the treasureable values of enduring love, unity, peace, oneness, Brotherhood and tolerance among the Ogbia people and communities; and thereby abrogate the socio-cultural dislocations that are dangerously erasing harmony and gladness among the Ogbia people and communities. Our youths must be free from moral and cultural decadence and enjoy liberty from secret cults. A refreshing hope is that the integrity, honesty and diligence of the Ogbia youths must be authoritative.
Let a deep interrogation of the Ogbia problems be undertaken by the Ogbia Brotherhood youth body. Catalogue the problems vis-à-vis the solutions and put in place a strategic mechanism to progressively and systematically solve the problems and meet the needs. This strategic thinking and actioning when sustained will conscientize the Ogbia youths into a great and growing army of solution providers and need givers; which is the process of building a prosperous and happy society. The Ogbia youths must launch a developmental blueprint and religiously pursue the implementation process in collaboration with other critical stakeholders that are blazing thinkers and doers. Permit me the kindness of pleasure to offer my humble self in this new spiritual rebirth. Positive change is the prerogative of few but a bountiful reward for all. A prosperous and a happy tomorrow is only but the rewarding fruit of the great and continuous hard labour of today. Not to labour today is merely the painful announcement of a coming calamity tomorrow.
ConclusionFor Thomas Aquinas, “the soul is known by its acts.” Let the rich soul of the Ogbia youths and the accompanying expectations be known by actions and actions. Let the crowning glory of this Ogbia day and anniversary celebration produce implementable solutions with matching actions. May I stimulate your inner conscience that it is God that works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Pour your worship and honour to God for all power of transformation belongs to God. God who has endowed the Ogbia people and its kingdom without measure will no doubt empower the Ogbia youths in this renaissance. Accept my sincere gratitude for this rich audience and the pleasure of listening. Thanks and God blessedness to the Ogbia youths.
Long live Ogbia Brotherhood! Long live Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Wing!Long live the Ogbia People!Long live the Ogbia Kingdom!
