‎Team Uyo Set for New Medal Record with instant Cash Reward for Medal winners
‎
‎
‎Akanimo Kufre
‎
‎Team Uyo are targeting a new medal record at the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, with the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, promising instant cash rewards for athletes who win medals for the capital city.
‎
‎Addressing members of the contingent ahead of the competition, Udo announced instant cash rewards for medal-winning athletes, a move aimed at boosting morale, rewarding excellence and inspiring the team to surpass its previous achievements at the festival.
‎
‎The festival officially got underway on Tuesday, September 22, at Uyo Township Stadium, venue of the opening ceremony, where the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, PhD, lit the Festival Torch to signal the commencement of sporting activities across the state.
‎
‎Sports Supervisor for Uyo, Roberto Edem, confirmed that Team Uyo will compete in about 15 sporting events. He expressed confidence that the team would deliver an improved performance and challenge strongly for honours across the various disciplines.
‎
‎Uyo finished second on the medal table at the 2025 edition, behind Itu Local Government Area. With that performance providing a platform for this year’s campaign, Team Uyo are now aiming to go one step further and claim the overall top position.
‎
‎More than 4,000 athletes representing the 31 local government areas are expected to compete across 27 sports, turning the festival into a major talent-identification platform for the state. Officials hope the competition will uncover the next generation of athletes capable of breaking into national teams and competing on the international stage.
‎
‎The emergence of athletes such as Ruth Usoro, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Edidiong Umoafia and Enko Ewa Ekuta has demonstrated the potential of Akwa Ibom’s grassroots sports system. For Team Uyo, the challenge is now to convert ambition, preparation and the promise of financial incentives into medals and potentially produce the next stars to fly the Akwa Ibom and Nigerian flags.

‎POWER WILL BE RESTORED IN AKPASAK ESTATE BEFORE DECEMBER – UYO CHAIRMAN
‎
‎The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, has assured residents of Akpasak Estate that electricity will be restored to the estate before December 2026 through the Council's initiative.
‎
‎Dr Udo gave the assurance when he received a delegation from Akpasak Estate Management in his office on a courtesy visit led by the Estate Chairman, Mr. Christopher Bassey, KSM.
‎
‎Speaking during the visit, Mr. Bassey said the estate, which comprises residents in some parts of Mbiabong, Ifa Ikot Okpon, Ifa Ikot Akpabio and Ifa Atai, has been without electricity for over two years following challenges with power infrastructure. He appealed to the Council Chairman to assist the estate with a 500KVA electricity substation to restore power supply to the area.
‎
‎He also highlighted other challenges facing the estate, some of which require the intervention of the Akwa Ibom State Government, and expressed confidence that the Council Chairman would continue to provide solutions within the scope of the Council's responsibilities while supporting efforts to address other pressing concerns.
‎
‎Responding, Dr Udo clarified that the Local Government does not undertake transformer repairs but assured the delegation that the Council would intervene through the provision of a 500KVA electricity substation under the initiative.
‎
‎"Before December 2026, power will be restored in Akpasak Estate as the Council, under the initiative of our administration, will donate a 500KVA electricity substation to the estate," the Chairman stated.

UYO HOLGS COMMENDS CHAIRMAN, CHARGES STAFF ON DISCIPLINE AND PROFESSIONALISM
..Mandates Corporate Dressing, ID Cards; Warns Against Mail Routing Sabotage

The Head of Local Government Service (HOLGS), Uyo Local Government Council, Mr. Etiuwem Udo, has commended the Chairman of the Council, Dr Uwemedimo E. Udo, for creating a conducive working environment for staff, while charging workers to reciprocate the administration's efforts through improved attitude, discipline and commitment to duty.

Mr. Udo gave the commendation on Monday, September 14, 2026, during the Council's General Staff Meeting held at the Council Secretariat, Uyo.

According to him, the Chairman's leadership has transformed the working environment in the Council, with offices now properly furnished and providing an atmosphere conducive to productivity and efficient service delivery.

He noted that while management had continued to prioritise staff welfare and workplace improvement, workers must also play their part by adhering strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the Public Service.

“The beauty of service is respect for hierarchy,” he emphasized, stressing that discipline and due process remain fundamental to effective public service.

The HOLGS explained that the meeting became necessary following his recent engagement with the Head of the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service and was aimed at communicating new expectations and standards to workers.

He subsequently directed staff to change their attitude towards work, embrace professionalism and familiarise themselves with the Civil Service Rules, ensuring that their conduct, appearance and performance reflect the standards expected of public servants.

Mr. Udo announced a dress code for staff, stating that corporate dressing and the use of valid identity cards would be mandatory from Monday to Wednesday, while decent dressing would be expected on Thursdays and Fridays. He also warned against coloured hair and excessive makeup, stressing the need for workers to maintain standards consistent with public service regulations.

Reaffirming his commitment to staff welfare, the HOLGS praised Dr Uwemedimo Udo for his responsiveness to workers' needs and sustained support for staff welfare.

“My Chairman has been a very listening Chairman,” he said, noting that the administration had continued to address issues affecting workers promptly.

Mr. Udo revealed that staff members were currently benefiting from a ₦100,000 one-time welfare support package and assured those yet to receive the support that they would eventually be captured.

“Everybody will certainly be touched,” he assured.

He further disclosed that officers operating imprest had consistently received their monthly imprest allocations since his assumption of office, describing the development as a significant improvement in staff support and administrative efficiency.

The HOLGS also commended the Chairman for maintaining a cordial relationship with the labour union and ensuring that matters concerning staff welfare receive prompt attention.

He warned workers against engaging in actions capable of undermining their colleagues or disrupting official processes. He specifically frowned at the unauthorized routing of official mails, describing the practice as a serious offence that could attract disciplinary measures, including queries.

Mr. Udo urged staff to follow established channels in handling official correspondence and to cultivate a workplace culture built on cooperation, professionalism, and mutual respect.

The HOLGS also unveiled activities lined up for the 2026 Public Service Week and encouraged workers to participate actively in the programme. He noted that the inclusion of local government staff in the activities marked a significant development and called on workers to take advantage of the opportunities for engagement and professional growth.

He particularly urged staff to participate in the Public Service Week Carnival Float scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Mr. Udo expressed optimism that the new measures and initiatives would strengthen discipline, improve productivity and enhance service delivery across the Council.

Present at the meeting were the Director of Administration and General Services, Mrs. Veronica Ekanem; Director of Finance, Pst (Mrs.) Udeme Paul; Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Pst (Mrs.) Lucy Isong; Director of BPRS, Pastor Inyang Inyang; Director of SDEISC, Mr. Boniface Otu; Deputy Directors of Administration and Finance; as well as the NULGE Chairman and members of the union's executive.
