NSIT ATAI RECEIVES 5,000 IMPROVED OIL PALM SEEDLINGS TO BOOST LOCAL PRODUCTION

The drive to expand oil palm production in Akwa Ibom State reached Nsit Atai Local Government Area on Monday 7th september, 2026 with the distribution of 5,000 improved oil palm seedlings to farmers in the local government.

The exercise is expected to provide a major boost to oil palm cultivation, while giving farmers access to quality planting materials needed to establish productive plantations and improve their long term earnings from the seedlings.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairman of Nsit Atai Local Government Area Hon. Prince Anthony Nyong, commended His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno for extending the State’s oil palm development programme to the farmers in Nsit Atai, describing the provision of these seedlings as an investment in the future of farmers and family across the LGA.

He urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the seedlings and ensure that they are properly planted, protected and nurtured to maturity.

According to him, the success of the initiative will depend not only on the distribution of the seedlings but also on the commitment of farmers to maintaining their farms and turning the seedlings into productive oil palm plantations.

The Chairman further encouraged farmers to take advantage of government's agricultural programmes, noting that increased oil palm cultivation could provide sustainable livelihoods for rural families while creating opportunities for employment and other businesses along the value chain.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Agriculture and Food Security Committee, Prof. Okon Ansa, represented by the Vice Chairman of the Committee, Prof. Trenchard Ibia, described the distribution as an important step towards expanding the agricultural base of Nsit Atai and strengthening food security through the Tree Crop Revolution.

He stressed the need for beneficiaries to adhere to recommended planting and management practices, noting that improved seedlings would only deliver the desired results when properly established and cared for.

He explained that the focus of the intervention goes beyond putting seedlings in the hands of farmers, but is aimed at building productive farms that can generate sustained income and contribute to the development of the oil palm value chain in the state.

Critical stakeholders in Nsit Atai LGA and the beneficiaries while giving their goodwill message, expressed appreciation for this intervention and pledged to plant and nurture the seedlings, with expectations that the initiative would improve their farming activities and provide additional sources of income in the future.

The Nsit Atai distribution therefore marks another step in the State Government’s effort to expand oil palm cultivation, empower farmers with improved seedlings and develop a more productive and sustainable agricultural economy across Akwa Ibom State.
