IYC National Election: Gov. Diri Holds Stakeholders Meeting, Reaffirms Collective Commitment to Peace and Unity.

YENAGOA __________ The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Sen. Douye Diri has convened an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) in Yenagoa to reaffirm our collective commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of the Ijaw nation.

As activities hitting up towards the 2026 IYC elective convention, Sen. Douye Diri addressed Stakeholders to place the interest of collective interest Ijaw of Nation above personal ambitions and avoid every tendency that could lead to division.

"We must continue to build bridges, not walls,

"I urged all IYC leaders and stakeholders to embrace love, reconciliation, and mutual respect, reminding all that a united Ijaw nation is stronger, more influential, and better positioned to pursue our collective aspiration as a people.

"I was particularly pleased to facilitate the reconciliation between Jonathan Lokpobiri and Theophilus Alaye.

"Their decision to embrace peace and put the past behind them is a commendable step that should inspire every Ijaw son and daughter to choose dialogue over discord.

"The Ijaw nation can only attain greater heights when we stand together with one voice and one purpose.

"Let us continue to promote unity, and preserve the legacy of the IYC, for peace, stability, and development of our people". He admonished.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja has set aside its earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party, effectively nullifying all actions taken pursuant to the ruling.

Nigeria Police Force CLARIFIES FALSE BANDITRY NARRATIVE IN VIRAL KATSINA VIDEO, REAFFIRMS PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY SECURITY VOLUNTEERS

The Nigeria Police Force categorically disclaims the false and misleading narrative accompanying a viral video circulating on social media which alleges that a uniformed police officer was seen interacting with armed bandits in Katsina State.

For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits. They are duly recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively supporting ongoing security operations in collaboration with security agencies in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.

The video captured a routine interaction between a police officer and these security volunteers as they proceeded to a designated operational area in support of efforts to combat criminality and enhance public safety. Any claim suggesting otherwise is entirely false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public.

The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the deliberate distortion of facts and the circulation of misinformation capable of causing public anxiety, undermining confidence in security institutions, and frustrating ongoing security operations.

Members of the public are urged to disregard the misleading claims attached to the video and rely only on information disseminated through official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and other authorized government sources.

The Force warns individuals and groups engaged in the creation, publication, or dissemination of false information capable of prejudicing public peace and security to desist immediately, as appropriate legal action may be taken against violators.

The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to working with legitimate community-based security stakeholders and other relevant partners in the collective effort to protect lives, safeguard communities, and combat crime across the country.

Senate Passes State Police Bill, Empowers Governors to Appoint Commissioners

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday passed the constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police across the country, marking a major step towards restructuring Nigeria's security architecture.

The bill was approved after the Senate considered the report of its Committee on the Review of the Constitution, presented by the Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Committee, Senator Barau Jibrin.

Following clause-by-clause consideration at the Committee of the Whole, the legislation secured the constitutionally required two-thirds majority support of senators through a manual voting process.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio subsequently announced the passage of the bill, while Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele led deliberations on the proposed legislation before lawmakers voted on its various provisions.

The bill seeks to establish a State Police Service that will operate alongside the existing Federal Police Service, creating a dual policing system aimed at enhancing security and improving response to local security challenges.

Under the proposed law, the Federal Police Service will continue to be headed by the Inspector-General of Police, while each State Police Service will be led by a Commissioner of Police appointed by the governor and confirmed by the State House of Assembly.

The legislation further empowers state governors to issue lawful written directives of a general policy nature to State Police Commissioners on matters relating to public safety and public order.

To prevent abuse of power, the bill contains safeguards restricting the use of state police for political purposes. Specifically, State Police Commissioners are prohibited from arresting, detaining, investigating or deploying force against any individual, political party or group solely for criticising the government, except where such actions are carried out in accordance with the law and due process.

The passage of the bill represents one of the most significant constitutional reforms in Nigeria's security sector in recent years and is expected to generate further national debate as it progresses through the remaining constitutional processes required for implementation.
