REWRITING HISTORY WILL NOT ERASE JONATHAN’S LEGACY: NIGERIANS BE THE JUDGE ON GEJ2027.

“When falsehood is repeated often enough, it risks becoming accepted as truth. But truth, like the sun, cannot be hidden forever.”

SETTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHT

The attention of the public has been drawn to the State House press statement of September 29, 2025, signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, which sought to diminish the record of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonatha, GCFR, while overstating the achievements of the present administration. For the sake of truth and history, it is necessary to set the records straight with verifiable facts.

1. ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE UNDER JONATHAN

Strong GDP Growth: Between 2010 and 2014, Nigeria’s GDP grew at an average of 6.5%, one of the fastest in the world (World Bank/IMF data). In 2013, following a rebasing exercise, Nigeria’s economy became the largest in Africa, valued at over $510 billion.

Diversification: Agriculture, services, and ICT recorded significant growth. Nollywood became the second-largest film industry globally, contributing over $7 billion annually to GDP.

Foreign Direct Investment: Nigeria attracted over $20 billion in FDI between 2010 and 2014 (UNCTAD data), ranking among Africa’s top destinations.

2. DEBT AND RESERVES MANAGEMENT

Debt Profile: As at May 2015, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at ₦12.12 trillion ($63.81bn), representing less than 13% of GDP (Debt Management Office, 2015). Today, under the current administration, public debt has surged past ₦100 trillion, raising sustainability concerns.

Reserves and Oil Revenue: In 2010, reserves were $45.9bn; by 2014, despite the global oil price crash from over $100 to below $50 per barrel, reserves stood at $34.5bn (CBN data). The decline was a global shock, not evidence of mismanagement.

Salary Bailouts: It is false that Jonathan’s Federal Government could not pay salaries. In 2014–2015, Jonathan approved ₦338 billion bailout funds for states struggling with salary arrears due to falling oil prices.

3. INSTITUTIONAL AND TRANSPARENCY REFORMS

President Jonathan introduced and implemented key reforms still in use today:

Treasury Single Account (TSA) – streamlined government revenues.

Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) – eliminated thousands of ghost workers.

Bank Verification Number (BVN) – strengthened banking transparency.
These reforms were internationally recognised by the World Bank and IMF as steps towards fiscal discipline.

4. SECURITY AND DEMOCRACY

By March 2015, Jonathan’s government had reclaimed 14 of 16 local government areas earlier seized by Boko Haram in the Northeast, with support from regional forces (Chad, Niger, Cameroon).

Most importantly, Jonathan made history by conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election—the first peaceful transfer of power in Nigeria’s democratic history—earning global respect and stabilising the nation.

5. TINUBU’S CLAIMED “GIANT STRIDES” VS REALITY

While the State House highlights selective statistics, reality on the ground tells a different story:

Inflation: Headline inflation stands at 20.12% (NBS, Aug. 2025), but food inflation exceeds 31%, the highest in a decade, worsening hunger for ordinary Nigerians.

Poverty: Over 133 million Nigerians remain in multidimensional poverty (NBS, 2022), with no significant reduction since Tinubu assumed office.

Investment Climate: Despite claims of “investor confidence,” multinationals such as GlaxoSmithKline and Procter & Gamble exited Nigeria between 2023–2024, citing harsh economic conditions.

Debt Surge: Nigeria’s debt profile has more than doubled in two years, surpassing ₦100 trillion, despite record revenues from oil and taxes.

6. ON 2027 AND JONATHAN’S ELIGIBILITY

The press release questions Jonathan’s eligibility to contest. For clarity:

The Nigerian Constitution (Section 137) bars anyone elected twice as president not swearing in. Jonathan was elected once (2011) and completed the tenure of his late predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Legal authorities and constitutional experts affirm his eligibility remains intact at least for a single tenure should he choose to contest.

CONCLUSION

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s record is one of economic growth, democratic consolidation, and institutional reform—not the “disaster” described by the State House.

Attempts to rewrite history cannot erase:
Nigeria’s emergence as Africa’s largest economy under Jonathan.
His democratic sacrifice in 2015 that preserved national unity.
The enduring reforms still driving transparency in governance today.

Nigerians will judge leaders not by propaganda but by lived realities. In 2027, as always, sovereignty will rest with the people at the ballot box—not with press statements designed to distort history.

I repeat! History cannot be rewritten by press statements. The Nigerian people—and only the people—will decide the future in 2027.

“You may distort history for a season, but you cannot imprison truth forever. In the end, it is the people who will judge, not propaganda.”

WHY TIMIPRE SYLVA'S SELF-CENTERED LEADERSHIP STYLE IS A RED FLAG: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS WITH DIRI'S ALL-INCLUSIVE APPROACH.

By Mr Nathaniel Micheal Goodnews,
Chairman PDP National Youth Movement, Bayelsa State Chapter.

Chief. Timipre Sylva, the All Progressive Congress (APC) Bayelsa governorship candidate, has emerged as campaign Director-General (DG). This move has rung a warning bell for many, considering Sylva’s leadership style and the ultimate progress of Bayelsa state. Sylva's characterization as self-centered results from his excessively centered focus on personal power, interest, and legacy, often at the expense of the state's welfare. Without missing words and in the genuine interest of the development and greater good of our State, I wish to critically examine Sylva’s leadership, juxtapose against that of our incumbent Governor. Douye Diri, cued by the perceived need for continuity and an all-inclusive approach in Bayelsa's politics.

The worries about Sylva's leadership style are not groundless. According to Igbanibo, (2011), Sylva's tenure as governor of Bayelsa from 2007 to 2012 was reckoned with controversies and criticisms regarding his brand of politics. There were allegations of lack of accountability and transparency ( Such a leadership dementia not only undermines the democratic institution but also contributes to decrepit infrastructural development and public disillusionment.

Also, Eme and Ogbochie in (2014) averred that, the modus for leadership ought to foster inclusivity and ensure a shared vision of progress rather than prioritize personal gains. This is notably a pitfall for Sylva, who has often been criticised for prioritizing personal agendas above the collective vision of Bayelsa's development.

Contrastingly, Sen. Douye Diri, the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) flag bearer, has demonstrated an admirable stance towards inclusive leadership and sustainable development. Diri's politics, as he often states, is not a tool for self-aggrandizement but a platform to serve Bayelsan's with sincerity and commitment. His all-inclusive leadership approach, which was evident during his his 3years of service in office as a Governor of Bayelsa, focuses on the participation and the progress of all strata of the society.

Moreover, Diri is a staunch believer of the continuity bid, a philosophy that suggests that administrations should build on the accomplishments of their predecessors rather than obliterate them. According to Obi, (2020). Douye Diri advocates that the government should consistently strive for development and progress of the state rather than personal or individuals gain. This stance delineates the stark difference between the leadership attitudes of Diri and Sylva; while the latter appears to relish in a self-centered approach, the former is committed to holistic development.

In essence, the political climate of Bayelsa is at a crossroads with the APC leadership in all under Sylva's monopoly seen as a red flag, signaling total distrust of any other and wilding all party control to himself. It calls for contemplation among it's party members and the general voters to decide whether to support a model marked by allegations of selfish interests or opt for an all-inclusive approach as embodied in Diri’s leadership.

To conclude, it is crucial for any democratic society to encourage inclusiveness and development oriented leadership. The Bayelsan people deserve a leader who will uphold their interests above personal gains, someone like Diri, who believes in continuity and all-inclusivity. We must promote these virtues in our political environment, as leadership artistry is instrumental in shaping the society's future. Therefore, Bayelsa needs a leader who embodies these principles; Bayelsa needs Diri. You and I need DIRI, let us support and vote for PDP come Nov. 11 governorship elections.

THE LESSONS OF DOUYE DIRI ON LEADERSHIP, DEVELOPMENT AND THE BAYELSA QUESTION: THE NEED TO SUPPORT DIRI'S CONTINUITY BID.

By Mr Nathaniel M Goodnews
Chairman PDP National Youth Movement Bayelsa State Chapter.

1. In the vista of leadership, where innovation, commitment, and unwavering resilience is the order of the day, the impact of a leader becomes apparent in how well he aligns with these core principles. Such is the narrative woven around Douye Diri, the Bayelsa State Governor, whose leadership style has produced not just figures but tangible results.

2. I write with the hope to critically evaluate the lessons from Douye Diri's leadership qualities, the dynamics of development and the Bayelsa question, accentuating the importance of supporting his continuity bid.

3. Bayelsa the heart of Ijaw Nation and the glory of all lands is blessed both in natural and human resources, contributing immensely to national DGP and sustainance of Nigeria's project, Bayelsa had no justification for the glorified-city-status of Yenagoa, the state capital, from previous administration, the state had recorded poor development strides among the South-South states. “There is use to be serious leadership problem in Bayelsa State. It is the leadership question. What else does the state need? We have a voting population that is less than one million. We are just eight local government areas. In fact, what comes to Bayelsa is about four times higher than what goes to (some) other states. Yet the state lacked visionary, selfless and determined leaders to accelerate it's developmental aspirations to fusion, truly not until the emergence of Sen Douye Diri, 3 years back.

4. Drawing on the insights of James MacGregor Burns (1978), leadership can be transformative when it creates valuable and positive change in the followers. Diri’s leadership has transcended beyond routine administration; it is a phenomenon characterised by purpose and the deliverance of public good. Indeed, this discourse establishes the reason why Bayelsans should rally behind his continuation bid.

5. The core of Douye Diri's leadership hinges on education, social health, infrastructure, and youth engagement, which have seen considerable improvements in Bayelsa State. An academic report (3) reveals that under his administration, there have been significant improvements in educational achievement, social health improvement, infrastructure development, and de-escalation of youth restiveness. It further underscores that Diri’s leadership is anchored on making meaningful progress, unlike some past administrations that were marked by unnecessary extravagance and financial imprudence which further gave rise to insecurities.

6. With regards to infrastructure, Diri's administration has been vibrant, focusing on roads, bridges and other physical infrastructures, which has irrefutably impacted positively on the State. According to a report by Nigerian Infrastructure News, the Diri administration has made significant strides, ensuring motorable roads, robust structural framework and easy mobility within the State.

7. In the health sector, Diri's administration has established a medical university and improved on the Bayelsa Health Scheme policy to ensure that every citizen has access to good healthcare services, various programs have been developed to cover different segments of society. Today, the scheme is opened to the general public, just as the Federal Government used to subsidize fuel that brought much relief to the citizenry so health has been subsidized in Bayelsa State.

8. Youth engagement and empowerment, which have been focal points of his administration, can't be over-emphasised. His administration has provided the framework for training, employment and empowerment opportunities for the youth and women, thereby decreasing unemployment and social vices hitherto common in the Bayelsa State. In a recent article by the Guardian Nigeria, the Governor initiated several programmes aimed at offering long-term employment and reduction of social vices among the youth.

9. Diri's leadership encapsulates development, and his continuity bid seeks to progress these developments for a better and more prosperous Bayelsa. It is therefore reasonable and important for Bayelsans to show unflinching support and stand in solidarity for his continuity bid.

10. In conclusion, evidence suggests Sen. Douye Diri's leadership has brought immense development and peace to Bayelsa. The principle of continuity allows these advancements to progress. Giving support to Diri's continuity bid is not borne out of mere party loyalty but a testament to his transformative leadership and the prospect of an even brighter Bayelsa. Let us support Diri!

DOUYE DIRI AND LAWRENCE EWHRUDJAKPO: CATALYSTS FOR BAYELSA'S PROSPERITY, BACKING THEIR 2ND-TERM BID.

By Mr Nathaniel Micheal Goodnews
Chairman, PDP National Youth Movement Bayelsa State Chapter.

1. Bayelsa State, the glory of all lands, faces the brink of a decisive moment as its denizens prepare to choose their leaders for another electoral tenure. The candidates are varied, but the limelight shines squarely on the incumbent Governor and his Deputy, Sen. Douye Diri and Sen. Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo. Their first term saw a sustained focus on development, unity, and shared prosperity. Their second term bid reverberates with the promise of continuity, political stability, and further progress. I put forth a sincere request to my fellow Bayelsans and Nigerians at large, to lend our support for Diri and Ehwrudjakpo's 2nd term bid.

2. Supported by his venerable deputy, Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo, Douye Diri has ushered in an era of calmer political weather, tethering their administration to the principle of fairness and equity. The blueprint for Prosperity Agenda draws a vivid picture of their commitment for equitable development and prosperity for the land and the people of Bayelsa. It is both a testament to their tireless efforts hitherto and a blueprint for the projects they envision.

Under their leadership, Bayelsa has made key strides towards sustainable development. Diri's administration has seen phenomenal infrastructure growth, including road transportation enhancement projects and health sector upgrades. These strides, albeit significant, are mere precursors to the overarching vision they have for Bayelsa.

3. Underpinning Diri's outlook is a robust commitment to education, youth and women empowerment - the established drivers of prosperity. The 'DiriBoost' and DiriSkillsAquisition programmes, an innovation targeted at providing grants/soft loan facilities to youthful entrepreneurs and Small-Medium Businesses, demonstrates a pragmatic approach to tackling unemployment with long-term, sustainable solutions.

4. Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo, an indispensable asset to the Diri's administration, propounds the fitting metaphor of governance being a relay race - a continuous process where the baton is passed for the betterment of all Bayelsans. His emphasis on total development targeting both urban and rural sectors demonstrate his troops' honesty for emancipating Bayelsans from economically backward conditions.

5. Look around, and you will see the fruits borne from the seeds of their policies. Bayelsans live, work, and dream with a renewed spirit aligned with their leaders' vision - a shared dream of Prosperity for All.

6. However, continuity in governance is as essential as envisioning progress. With an abrupt shift in power, the disruption may dismantle the established rhythm of implementation of projects and policies. Reelecting Douye Diri and Lawrence Emhrudjakpo will ensure that the efforts undertaken continue their momentum, fostering a seamless transition into further Prosperity.

7. In conclusion, You're specially invited to join us Support and Vote for Douye Diri and Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo come Nov 11 2023 as they have proven themselves as faithful servants of Bayelsa State, within the past 3years successfully translating their Prosperity Agenda into actionable policies that encapsulate common growth for all. They are not merely political figureheads, but valuable stewards of our shared dream for a prosperous Bayelsa. Let us not waver in our decision to re-elect these prominent figures, for continuity in good governance is the key to effectuating the prosperity we desire.

DOUYE DIRI'S ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE SECURITY SECTOR AND THE NECESSITY TO SUPPORT HIS SECOND TERM BID.

By Mr Nathaniel Micheal Goodnews
Chairman, PDP National Youth Movement, Bayelsa State Chapter.

In the political scene of Nigeria's Bayelsa State, it's impossible to ignore the hardworking Sen. Douye Diri and his profound contribution to the development of the state as incumbent executive governor. He has proven himself to be a visionary leader, and his work in the security sector is indeed commendable. I wish to focus on Diri's achievements in this realm and the crucial need to support his bid for a second term to ensure the state's continuous growth and stability.

1. Since clocking in as the Governor of Bayelsa State in February 2020, Diri has demonstrated an unyielding commitment to fortifying the state’s security apparatus, leading to a significant decrease in crime rates. His strategic security strides have provided a conducive environment for economic and social activities to thrive, thus boosting the state's progress in multiple aspects.

2. One way Diri championed the enhancement of security was through the provision of adequate logistics and welfare support to the law enforcement agencies in the state. For instance, in November 2020, he donated 50 patrol vehicles to the police and other security agencies, which improved the mobility and deployment of these agencies to flashpoints in the state. These efforts were tangible and reflect his commitment to ensuring that the state maintains its peaceful ambience.

4. Furthermore, Diri has taken numerous proactive steps towards addressing the herder-farmer crisis that has ravaged many parts of Nigeria. His administration enacted the Livestock Breeding and Marketing Regulation Law 2021, which aimed to regulate the breeding, rearing, and marketing of livestock to provide a lasting solution to the conflicts between farmers and herders in the state. This proactive approach to resolve ongoing crises has largely maintained the state's peace and stability.

5. Diri also embarked on several community engagements and reconciliatory initiatives with the state's local communities in order to hear and address their concerns. His particular focus on security to protect oil installations has demonstrated his understanding of the state having one of the most extensive coastal lines and being a significant contributor to Nigeria's oil production. These engagements have resulted in lesser attacks on oil facilities, leading to an uninterrupted flow of revenue from oil exploration and revenue to the state’s coffers.

6. Yes Diri inherited series of security set-up by previous administration and stimulates them to serve maximally in ensuring crime and criminality is at it most minute size in the state , however in his hope for ensuring absolute safe environment across the State in December 2021 Governor Diri signed into bill establishing the Bayelsa State Community Safety Corps and on 9th Feb 2023 Diri trained inaugurated 603 Bayelsa State community safety corps, provided more security gadget with the mandate to work closely with the federal and state existing law enforcement agencies for the protection of life and properties, this commitment aimed at complementing the efforts already made with the subsist state security outfits, (Operation Doo-Akpo, the Bayelsa Volunteer and the Bayelsa Vigilante). Diri's desire to ensure a peaceful state goes beyond the keeping the state capital crime free hence creation of Bayelsa State Community Corps to train and deployed them to server in the various communities to collaborate with security agencies in protecting government assets and infrastructure as well as check criminal activities.

7. These achievements are just the tip of the iceberg, and it's clear that Diri's administration provides the fortitude needed to ameliorate Bayelsa's security landscape. Supporting his second term bid is not just about continuity, but it's essentially about growth and stability. It's about ensuring that the giant strides he has started in the security sector do not end prematurely before they can reach their full potential.

8. Indeed, it's arguable that the work of a single term does not and cannot fully encompass the scope of Diri's vision for Bayelsa State. His invaluable attempts to improve and solidify the state's security sector within this short timeframe justify the necessity for a second term. Granting him another tenure offers the promise of more years to build upon, consolidate and implement the many projects he has begun, further fortifying Bayelsa's security framework.

9. In conclusion, the track record of Governor Douye Diri in transforming the security sector thereby attracting home our much needed development in Bayelsa State, aligns with the desires of the citizens for a peaceful, secure and prosperous state. His landmark achievements in this first tenure create a strong argument for his re-election. Failure to re-elect him would undermine the progress already made in this sector, hence the urgent need for the collective support of all Bayelsans. I plead for you VOTE in Favour of PDP.
