*Government Reverses Suspension of Agbidiama Paramount Ruler*
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Thompson Amule, has called on the leadership of the Agbidiama community to return home and promote peaceful coexistence for the overall benefit of the people.
The Commissioner made this appeal during a meeting with the Paramount Ruler, chiefs, and members of the Agbidiama community at the Ministry’s Conference Room in Yenagoa.
Chief Amule stressed that mutual respect and understanding are vital for achieving shared goals and maintaining harmony within the community.
He criticized the alleged dethronement of the Paramount Ruler, stating that it contravenes state laws. According to him, only the government has the authority to depose a traditional ruler, as stipulated in the State Traditional Rulers and Chieftaincy Law.
He urged all parties to unite, noting that miscommunication played a major role in the dispute. He further encouraged the community to align with government objectives and uphold the rule of law in seeking justice.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Tourism Development, Hon. Alla John, appealed to the people of Agbidiama to embrace peace and resolve their differences amicably, in line with government policy.
He emphasized that any extra-judicial actions hold no legal weight under the law.
In his response, the Paramount Ruler, HRH Emly Kipasa Indiowei, defended his actions regarding the elected youth leader, stating that they were based on a court order and not intended to undermine the community.
He explained that he was complying with a judicial directive restraining him from recognizing the Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman.
Addressing claims that he walked out of the meeting, the ruler clarified that he had excused himself due to a medical issue, he promised to work for peace to return to the community.
Earlier, Chief Christian Bouwurufagha informed the Commissioner that the Paramount Ruler was suspended for refusing to accept the nomination of Kala Alau as the new CDC Chairman and for leaving a meeting before its conclusion.
He noted that these actions were considered contrary to the customs and traditions of the community, leading to the decision to suspend him.
Other attendees at the peace meeting included government officials, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders.
