They know how to create, communicate, and share digital content of their need, which helps them elevate their skill in their discipline independently.
Health Foundation Nepal has put digital and basic health literacy on the spotlight to unveil the transformative power of health, technology and digital literacy in the underserved setting. Health Foundation Nepal
Health Foundation Nepal is an amalgam of Expert and Expertise dedicated to improving the health, digital education, and well being of most underserved people in Nepal since 2012. Having
most of its active members working actively in the United States and Nepal, it has successfully carried out its mission of Digital Literacy and Health Education delivery in a most innovative way, which a developing country like Nepal with known limited resources and infrastructure seeks. With more than (number of) members, interns, and volunteer, this organisation has been an essence to the modern conscience of health and digital literacy in Nepal. Digital Literacy
The American Library Association (ALA) defines digital literacy as “the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills.” The newer education delivery modules emphasise digital literacy because digitally literate students know how to find and consume digital content. One has to keep in mind that digital literacy does not replace traditional forms of literacy, instead builds upon and expands the skills that form the foundation of conventional forms of literacy. Hence, it has to be considered, among others, as it is reachable with limited resources and workforce compared to its non unbound scopes. From a global perspective, the United Nations included digital literacy in its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which encourages digital literacy proficiency in teens and adults to facilitate educational and professional opportunities and growth. International initiatives like the Global Digital Literacy Council (GDLC) and the Coalition for Digital Intelligence (CDI) have also highlighted the need for and strategies to address digital literacy globally. Health And Digital Literacy Volunteering Campaign
It came as a new initiative among many others to create a self-sustaining module, a volunteering campaign per se, wide enough to cover Nepals most underserved and underprivileged children in the community, providing them Health and Digital literacy from skilled human resources and help them to grow both personally and professionally. Digital Literacy Volunteering
Roles and Responsibilities:
Each volunteer will be assigned to a school or organisation at their nearest suitable location. The volunteers will have to coordinate with their designated organisation, teach and train children in digital science. The volunteer will be given basic training regarding topics and content to be conducted. Volunteers will need to commit 3 to 4 hours a week for the program apart from monthly meetings and training. Basics travel expenses and lunch fees will be provided to the volunteer according to need. Benefits
As a volunteer, you will be working in a global network of professionals. You will be trained and counselled routinely, which will allow volunteers to create a network and connectivity for their professional growth. Apart from getting an opportunity to contribute and work for the community for a good cause, this will also help with your interpersonal and professional growth. Moreover, each volunteer will be certified upon successful completion of 6-month volunteering and routine pieces of training. Recommendations and additional support will be provided for new job applications in similar INGO and NGOs after completing the program on the basis of work and presentation during the course of volunteering. Health literacy
Health Foundation Nepal (HFN) calls for interested volunteers for the “Health and Digital Literacy Program”. HFN is a not-for-profit organization based in the United States of America and Nepal. It has been working for the past 10 years in the field of serving the underserved population of Nepal providing basic physical and mental health services, maternal and child health care, safe water and sanitation, health informatics and technology. With the help of voluntarily engaged qualified health professionals, the Health Literacy Program aims to educate the students studying in different public schools of Nepal on common disease conditions and good health practices. Background
Many people in Nepal, especially in underserved rural settings are far from the reach of modern medical services. Many of them lose their lives due to common diseases which are otherwise treatable. We aim to educate students in these rural settings about the common diseases that are widely prevalent in their communities. It is our small approach to provide health education to the community to uplift their health status. It would be our greatest achievement if the children whom we teach, can identify people around them carrying those diseases and can at least help them seek medical care. Furthermore, lack of safe water, safe food practices, and sanitation are other glaring problems in the Nepalese community, especially in the rural areas. We also aim to educate the students about their importance which will ultimately help reduce the threat of diseases in these communities. Benefits
As a volunteer, you will receive an opportunity to contribute and work at the community level for a good cause. This will help you in your professional growth and development. You will be working in close collaboration with mentors. The mentors include highly qualified doctors and health professionals from the United States of America and Nepal. This will present you a great opportunity to meet with such professionals and build your professional network. This, in turn, will undoubtedly help you in the future. The volunteers will receive all the necessary training and teaching materials from HFN. Further, you can create your own materials as appropriate. Apart from volunteering, we welcome feedback and suggestions from you on how we can improve in order to better achieve our goals. We believe in meaningful participation and we believe that this approach will make you feel more involved and motivated in the project. Our vision is to make this project self-sustaining with nationwide coverage in the long run. This is an opportunity to make a difference in the community by contributing your time and delivering your knowledge. Based on the feasibility and availability of the volunteers, the training sessions can be conducted both online and on-site. The on-site training is definitely more effective, however, we understand that we have many interested volunteers from all around the country. The current pandemic situation also limits the possibility of extensive on-site participation. Therefore, we have been conducting health literacy interactive classes via online platforms. We have contacts and connections with different public schools and orphan homes in Nepal. HFN collaborates with schools for the availability of suitable time and necessary technology for delivering the classes. The schedule, time and the topic of education will be provided ahead of time to the volunteers so as to afford them enough time to prepare themselves in order to make the classes more informative and interactive. All you require is a computer and reliable internet and all of this can be done from your home. We appreciate any amount of time and commitment from you as a volunteer. Your efforts will indeed be very valuable to us. We deeply appreciate your contribution to our project and welcome you aboard. Happy Volunteering!
