Mysterious encounters can sometimes occur while climbing. This knothole, for instance, was emitting a curious sound unlike anything I had heard in a tree before. "What lives here?" I wondered. I'll probably never know even though I got closer and looked inside. Nothing visible!

We returned to an old friend today. Momma Pine, more than 160 feet high, lies deep in the Chattahoochee National Forest, and today, for the first time in a while, we found the road leading into the forest to have an open gate. Five miles of rough road followed by a hike through a dense rhododendron thicket, followed by wading a creek, and we were there. Will, WildBill, and I had a wonderful,if challenging, climb on a lovely spring day.

Clarence Fouche has been climbing with us this weekend. Here is the man at about sixty feet in a large oak on the property at Galactic Headquarters.

Clarence Fouche, out of Tennessee, showed up on our doorstep yesterday and took us to dinner at the local Chilis. So today we took Clarence climbing out in the woods. Here Clarence (left photo) and WildBill on the way up a nice white oak in the forest near here.

Yesterday (3/25) Will, Wildill, and I made a return adventure to "Smitty", a tree we have not visited in several years. There was also a bit of gold panning involved in the adventure. For the full story go to: http://www.treeclimbercoalition.org/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2843

John Muir said "The mountains are calling and I must go." OK, So I stole it and put my own spin on it! I wish John Muir was around today ... I would take him climbing! I think I'll go climb something this afternoon now that I think about it.

This past weekend Will and I headed northwestward through Georgia to Pigeon Mountain and places beyond there in Alabama and Tennessee. The idea was to meet up with Glenn who was going to show us a big buckeye tree that might be a champion tree. Will and I first visited Rocktown for a bit of climbing and exploring. We then met Glenn, had dinner, and went on to set up camp nearby. Sunday morning we were on our way to "somewhere" to see this big tree. This involved a long ride down a very bad "road" in Glenn's four wheel drive pickup. Take a look at the video and the write-up at:

I will confess that the tree was all that Glenn said it would be and we had a nice climb before heading back out on the road from Hell! I am not sure that I would want to travel this "road" again!

Good morning! Welcome to my tree!
And if I look grouchy it is because you didn't bring any bananas!
