Dear friends made this in honor of Amy.

Amy Bakal-Ugarte passed away peacefully with her family by her side on April 18, 2015. Amy was the founder and visionary of La Pagina en la Puerta. For the hundreds of children in Cusco who Amy adored, she leaves the wonderful La Pagina en la Puerta, a legacy of hope, literacy and learning. La Pagina merged Amy’s passions for books, teaching and children. In Amy's memory, and for the children of Cusco, La Pagina will continue for years to come at its original home in the doorway of Amy's home.
As is clear from La Pagina, Amy was a humanitarian whose caring extended to animals and humans alike. Amy doted on animals, whether they were part of her menagerie of birds, rabbits, cats, dogs and chickens or the stray cats and dogs that wandered the streets of her neighborhood in need of medical care, food or shelter. As the consular agent in Cusco for the American Embassy, she helped hundreds of people travelling or living in Peru. Before her resignation from the Embassy in February, she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for her "tireless service to U.S. citizens in Cusco."
Amy will be missed by her family, her friends, and those whose lives she touched.

Asociacion La Pagina en La Puerta -- Una Biblioteca Juvenil, opened up its brand new doors to the amazing world of reading October 21st, 2013, back in its original doorway.
Children were quite excited to enjoy reading, doing homework, and playing in the library's new home! As they have always found, all areas of the library offer wonderful books for the children to jump into. Whether it be one of our over 3000 books in our fiction and non-fiction library; or one of our many puzzle books or Where´s Waldo in the gameroom, children know that they can count on finding a book no matter where they are in the library!
Several children found it quite comfortable doing their homework in the new homework room on the library's main floor. They loved being able to take off their shoes to go up to the library's main reading room where they can sit in a quite room at a table or on a cushion on the floor reading a favorite book or getting to know a new book.
Some of the children were equally comfortable sitting on the rug playing Risk in the game room, while others sat at tables playing other games or doing puzzles.
It was quite exciting to find away to build http:77a new library while still having a way to get into my house. The solution was build above about 12 meters of our narrow 17m by 2 meter entry -- and it worked.
The transparent roofing in the game room allows sunlight to pass through the transparent floor to the plants below; while also giving children who are playing joy at seeing which of their friends are arriving to the library!

Exciting news about Asociacion La Pagina en La Puerta -- Una Biblioteca Juvenil. We are about 3/4 of the way through building our new location. And what is even more exciting is that the library is moving back to its original doorway, it is coming home! Our new building will be brightly lit with natural light and in the night soft yellow lighting to make reading comfortable and a pleasure. We will continue to have a reading room, teen reading corner, game room, and homework room. All will be housed in a brand new building above the original doorway. It will be super clean, safe, and comfortable for all of the children who have been loving to read with us over the past few years. But, we need your help in recuperating the $7000 that it cost to put this wonderful new place up for these beautiful Cusco children. Please help us by clicking on the donation link below!

SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER — PROJECT PERU 2ND HAND CLOTHING STALL
The Cusco, Peru children’s library La Pagina en La Puerta would like to give a huge thank you to the All Saints’ school in the Australian community of Bathurst for raising $1035 in support of our reading programs.
In 2010, a group of All Saints’ high school students, parents, and teachers traveled to Peru with World Expeditions to visit the Inca Trail and other sites of interest. Based on their belief of reaching out to help other communities around the world, a part of the trip involved community service in the village of Tastayoq (not far from Cusco), assisting in projects in the village school library. During this same trip, the group learned about La Pagina en La Puerta and the work that we do to develop a love of reading in Cusco children, while improving their reading, comprehension, and communication skills. Since that time, they have been working on ways to help our library keep its doors open and these deserving children reading!
Last weekend All Saints’ held their Spring Fair and were blessed with glorious weather. Their “Project Peru” 2nd Hand clothing stall, their first fundraising effort for La Página en La Puerta, was quite successful and they managed to raise $1035!!
The All Saints’ students, parents, and teachers will continue their fundraising efforts to help pay our teachers’ salaries during the next few years. The students of the school are also going to be actively involved in thinking of and organizing fund raising activities to reach the goal of $200/month.
Cheers to the All Saints School!!!
We are hoping that as you have read this that you will be inspired to hold a fundraiser of your own in support of the much needed library and reading programs of La Pagina en La Puerta.
We appreciate any support that you can give!!!!
