Congratulations to our very own Agriculture Final Year Student OB RI Éñ 🎉🎊

O'Brien Koatavita wins One Health Program Logo Competition

Final-year Agriculture student O'Brien Katavita has won the One Health Program Logo Competition. Out of a total of 31 entries, O'Brien's design was selected as the best design to reflect the One Health Program at PNG UNRE.

In second place was Alfred Baiwan, a third-year Agriculture student from Popondetta Campus. Both students were recognized for their creativity and understanding of the One Health approach, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

The two winners were announced on Saturday evening during the grand finale of the One Health Student Debate.

As part of their recognition, both O’Brien and Alfred have been awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Port Moresby to attend the upcoming Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Symposium on November 18, 2024. Their prize includes round-trip airfares, two nights’ accommodation, and meals for the duration of their stay. The AMR Symposium offers an invaluable opportunity for the students to engage with health experts and professionals from various fields, allowing them to gain insights into the global challenges of antimicrobial resistance and the role of the One Health approach in addressing these issues.

Deputy Director of Public Health for East New Britain Provincial Health Authority Mr Paskalis Kinakava said it had been a difficult task judging the entries as they were all great designs.

He thanked all students who took part in the competition and congratulated O’Brien and Alfred on their achievements.

Both O’Brien and Alfred have been invited to become One Health Champions for the university. In this role, they will advocate for the One Health approach within the university community and beyond, raising awareness of the vital connections between human, animal, and environmental health.

Meanwhile, in the grand final of the One Health Student Debate competition, the “Green Change Initiative” team triumphed over the “Legends” team claiming victory in the debate series.

Vice Chancellor Professor Aisak Pue commended all participating students for their enthusiasm and commitment to advancing One Health awareness at PNG UNRE. He expressed confidence that the experiences gained from the logo competition, debate series, and upcoming AMR Symposium would inspire these students to champion One Health principles.
