Stop yearning! ๐ซ Di na po uso ang sad girl and sad boy!
Kaya ano pang hinihintay mo? ๐
GO head! Go head! Go head! Be ridiii dai!
GOO! GO! GO! GO! GO! ๐

With only four days to go before Valentineโs Day, the season of celebrations is once again upon us. This occasion is often associated with an abundance of cakes, chocolates, and other sweet treats that symbolize love and affection. While these foods are enjoyable and culturally significant during special occasions, it is important to remain mindful of our dietary choices to protect our overall health.
This reminder emphasizes moderation, especially sweet foods which are commonly present during festivities such as Valentineโs Day.
It is also important to understand the caloric contribution of sugar. One gram of sugar provides approximately 4 calories. This means that a single teaspoon of sugar, which weighs about 5 grams, contains roughly 20 calories. When consumed excessively, these calories can quickly accumulate, leading to unwanted weight gain and increased risk of chronic diseases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults are advised to reduce their daily intake of free sugars to less than 10% of their total daily energy intake. For an individual following a 2,000-calorie diet, this recommendation translates to approximately 50 grams of free sugars, or about 12 teaspoons per day. Free sugars include those added to foods and beverages by manufacturers, cooks, or consumers, as well as sugars naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices, and fruit juice concentrates.
For additional health benefits, particularly in reducing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and dental caries or tooth decay, the WHO further recommends limiting free sugar intake to below 5% of total energy consumption. This stricter guideline corresponds to roughly 25 grams, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. Adhering to this lower threshold has been shown to significantly improve long-term health outcomes.
As we celebrate Valentineโs Day and other special occasions, enjoying sweet treats in moderation is key. Choosing healthier alternatives, sharing desserts, and being mindful of portion sizes can allow us to partake in the festivities without compromising our health. After all, true love also means taking care of our bodies and making informed, balanced food choices.

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) joins the nation in observing Goiter Awareness Week 2026, an annual campaign aimed at increasing public awareness on Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and promoting proper nutrition for optimal thyroid health.
Goiter is a preventable condition, primarily caused by inadequate iodine intake, yet it remains a public health concern affecting individuals across all ages. Left unaddressed, iodine deficiency can impair growth, development, and overall well-being.
This year, the NNC calls on individuals, families, communities, and local government units to take proactive action by ensuring adequate iodine intake through the use of iodized salt, consumption of a balanced diet, and regular health check-ups. Strengthening nutrition education and awareness is key to preventing goiter and other iodine deficiencyโrelated disorders.
Together, let us work towards empowering every Filipino to protect their thyroid health and achieve overall wellness, as we support the shared vision of a healthier nation free from preventable nutrition-related conditions
