READ | DILG Alerts LGUs to Step Up Precautionary Measures Against Flooding, Landslides
The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged local government units (LGUs) to strengthen precautionary measures as Tropical Cyclone Nando and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon are expected to bring heavy rains that could trigger flooding and rain-induced landslides in several parts of the country.
In its latest advisory, PAGASA warned that urbanized and low-lying communities, as well as areas near rivers and mountainous terrain, are at heightened risk. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has listed more than 2,700 barangays nationwide, including over 930 in Metro Manila, as susceptible to floods and landslides from September 20 to 23.
The DILG called on governors, mayors, and barangay leaders to act with urgency by enforcing preemptive evacuations in high-risk communities, monitoring rivers and slopes, clearing obstructions in waterways, and ensuring the safety of roads near landslide-prone areas.
“With the combined effects of Nando and the recent rains from Tropical Depression Mirasol, some areas are now facing compounded hazards. We strongly urge LGUs to remain vigilant and proactive to protect lives and property,” the DILG said.
The DILG stressed that even barangays not included in the official risk list may still be affected, particularly those near identified danger zones. Updated advisories will be issued as rainfall forecasts evolve.
“All local chief executives must ensure that preparedness actions are in place and that residents are fully informed of potential risks in their communities,” the DILG added.
Mag-ingat ang lahat.
