READ MORE, LIVE LONGER? ๐โณ
Spending as little as 30 minutes a day reading books may be linked to a longer lifespan, according to multiple scientific studies.
A 2016 study published in Social Science & Medicine followed 3,635 adults over 12 years and found that those who read books had about a 20% lower risk of early death compared to non-readers. The same study also suggested that individuals who read regularly, especially for at least 30 minutes daily, tended to live longer.
A separate 2020 study by the University of Connecticut, in collaboration with Haskins Laboratories, found that engaging in book reading helps delay cognitive decline and supports both mental and physical health by keeping the brain actively stimulated.
Experts explain that reading acts like a โfull-brain workout,โ strengthening imagination, focus, memory, and analytical thinking, especially compared to fast, visual digital content.
According to neurologist Dr. Cymbeline Perez-Santiago of Makati Medical Center, reading books trains attention and cognitive skills in a way that modern short-form media often does not.
She also encourages people to make reading a simple daily habit, such as reading a few pages while waiting or during free moments, emphasizing that even short reading sessions can already provide benefits.
A few pages a day may go a long way for your health. ๐โจ
