The Abra State Institute of Sciences and Technology (ASIST) has officially transitioned into the University of Abra (UA). University officials, faculty, students, and community leaders gathered at the Gov. Andres B. Bernos Memorial Gymnasium in Bangued to mark this landmark achievement during the ceremonial launching and University Founderโs Day.
The conversion was established through Republic Act No. 11574, initiated by House Bill sponsor Congressman Joseph Sto. Niรฑo "JB" Bernos alongside Senator Imee Marcos and officially declared by Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Hon. Shirley C. Agrupis. The occasion brought together key stakeholders, including Congresswoman Ching Bernos, Governor Eustaquio Bersamin, Vice Governor Anne Bersamin, CHED Commissioner Dr. Myrna Q. Mallari, UA OIC-President Dr. Serafin L. Ngohayon, local mayors, and academic heads across Northern Luzon.
Adding to the milestone, the Civil Service Commission presented the institution with the PRIME-HRM Maturity Level II Bronze Award for excellence in human resource management. Looking toward the future, Rep. JB Bernos requested assistance from CHED to establish new degree programs in Nursing and Veterinary Medicine to address healthcare and agricultural needs across the province.
From ASIST to the University of Abra, this transformation marks a renewed commitment to excellence, innovation, and service. A new name, a renewed vision, and a brighter future for higher education in Abra!
