First Baguio Carnival Queen of 1915
Known as the sweetheart of the mountains.
The youngest beauty queen in the history of the Philippine carnival
Born in 1900 in Gumatdang. She was the eldest of 10 children of the couple Longinus โKiriโ Guirey and โShahadiโ Flora Pacalso. Her siblings were Lorenzo; Savayna; Angtan; Fausta; Paela; Mary; Philip; Kulong, and Helen.
Except for Lorenzo; Fausta, and Helen, the other siblings died of unknown diseases at tender ages.
In 1909 she was enrolled by her parents in Bua Public School together with โSavelโ Isabel Compalas also from Gumatdang.
There were about fifteen school girls in her class. All students were housed in a dormitory where parents and guardians delivered food staff aside from provisions provided by the American teachers like Mrs. Alice Kelly.
On weekends or when needed, parents or guardians took turns fetching water from nearby water springs. They would fill the water tanks provided and installed by the Americans from the mining site of Antamok.
Hygiene and sanitation was the norm as American teachers supervised the washing, bathing, and cooking by the school girls.
Aside from the academic subjects, the students selected skills they were comfortable with like dress making; cooking and music playing.
By 1915, Chainus was selected as the first Baguio carnival queen then later represented Baguio Benguet as beauty contestant in the Manila Carnival in 1918. She was the first Igorot girl to join the Manila Carnival. She was studying at that time in St. Lukeโs Hospital taking up nursing.
She was not able to finish her studies in said school when she contracted tuberculosis and never recovered. She died in the same hospital in 1920.
Her grandfather Pacalso and father Kiri appealed to the Baguio leadership headed by Mayor Halsema to bring home to Gumatdang her remains. The leadership prevailed to have her buried at the Baguio Cemetery.
