It describes a parent’s joy at a child’s birth, the sacrifices made during upbringing, and the eventual rebellion of the child as they succumb to "bad habits" and vice.

​🖌Freddie Aguilar wrote the song as a form of apology to his own father. After leaving home against his father's wishes to pursue music, he wrote "Anak" to express his remorse. Upon hearing it, his father reportedly wept, leading to their reconciliation.
