The National Historical Commission of the Philippines joins the family, friends, and loved ones in mourning the passing of Cesar E.A. Virata earlier today, 2 October 2026.

Virata began his long career as a faculty member of the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines in the 1950s later earning an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He would later serve as the Dean of the UP CBA. An astute businessman and technocrat, he served as Secretary/Minister of Finance (1970-1986), Director-General of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA, now the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development or DEPDEV) and Prime Minister (1981-1986) during the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. After the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, he returned to teaching in the academe.

As a descendant of General Baldomero Aguinaldo, he became very active in promoting the history and heritage of the nation and his home province of Cavite. On 21 June 1984, he donated the house of Baldomero Aguinaldo in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite to the National Historical Institute. It is now managed as the NHCP Baldomero Aguinaldo Shrine and he has been a constant supporter and benefactor of the Shrine. PM Virata is also an instrumental figure in the research, preservation, and promotion of the local history of Cavite, heading the Cavite Historical Society in various capacities, including attending the NHCPโ€™s Local Historical Committees Network in the 2010s.

This October, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines joins the nation in celebrating Museums and Galleries Month (MGM) 2026 with the theme, โ€œBridging Divides: Preserving the Present for Tomorrow.โ€
Observed every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 798, s. 1991, MGM celebrates the important role of museums and galleries in nurturing national consciousness, strengthening our connection with our cultural heritage, and carrying the stories of our communities forward. More than repositories of objects from the past, museums are living spaces for learning, dialogue, and discovery.
For the NHCP, these spaces extend across the country through our shrines, museums, and historical landmarks. They preserve the places where history happened, safeguard objects and memories that help tell our national story, and bring Filipinos closer to the lives, struggles, ideas, and communities that shaped our nation. This yearโ€™s theme reminds us that history and heritage can help bridge distances between generations, communities, and different experiences.
Museums become meaningful when the histories they preserve are shared, discussed, questioned, and made accessible to the people whose stories they tell. Throughout October, we celebrate the people and communities who keep these places alive and the visitors who continue to discover something new within them.
Hereโ€™s to a month of exploring, remembering, and making history come alive!

The NHCP invites Filipinos, students, and history enthusiasts, to sign and support the passing of the Lakambini Bill, an act that aims to reinforce and emphasize our โœจ๐’˜๐’๐’Ž๐’†๐’ ๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’๐’†๐’”โœจ in the teaching of Philippine History.

Through this bill, our future inheritors, the Filipino youth, will learn from the women who fought for independence, equality and inclusivity towards the building of a Filipino society where womenโ€™s voices can be heard, and stand on equal footing. This monumental bill coincides with the NHCP's designation of 2027 as the Year of Women in Philippine History.

Lingad officially opened the exhibit โ€œMยฒ: Magsaysay and Macapagal in the Arena of International Diplomacyโ€ at the Museo ni Ramon Magsaysay in Castillejos, Zambales.
The exhibit was held in line with the 119th Birth Anniversary of Former President Ramon Magsaysay and the celebration of the Decade of Philippine History and Diaspora. It highlights the international engagements and diplomatic initiatives of Former Presidents Ramon Magsaysay and Diosdado Macapagal, particularly their efforts to address the countryโ€™s internal and external challenges while strengthening the Philippinesโ€™ participation in international organizations, regional cooperation, and alliances with neighboring countries.
The event was attended by representatives of the Local Government Unit of Castillejos, Zambales, led by Vice Mayor Christian T. โ€œNiรฑoโ€ Esposo, as well as the Head of the Provincial Government (PTIPO), headed by Ms. Ma. Domitela M. Mora. Representing the Magsaysay family was Dr. Carmen Magsaysay, while Mr. Michael Ted Macapagal, former Chairman of the Philippine National Railways, represented the Macapagal family.
The event was also graced by a message from the Department of Foreign Affairs, delivered by Assistant Secretary Elmer G Cato. He emphasized how the foreign policy initiatives and diplomatic contributions of the two former Presidents continue to provide valuable lessons for Philippine foreign policy today. He further underscored the relevance of their legacy in strengthening the countryโ€™s resolve and position amid emerging external challenges, particularly concerning the Philippinesโ€™ territorial waters and national sovereignty.
The exhibit features the countryโ€™s rich history of economic and cultural exchanges, including pre-colonial maritime trade and relations with neighboring societies. It demonstrates how early Filipinos engaged in trade, diplomacy, and peaceful relations with other communities despite the complex influences of foreign powers. The exhibit also presents selected presidential books and materials of Diosdado Macapagal, as well as medals, personal mementos of Ramon Magsaysay.
The exhibit will runs until September 30, 2026.
