For two weeks, training was conducted across five coastal barangays: ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฒ. Each session followed a unified structure that introduced participants to the overview of the training, salient features of RA 11985, the salt production tenurial instrument (SPTI), salt producersโ registration (SPR), artisanal salt, food safety, and modernized methods of salt production. Ms. Laila L. Emperua, OIC-PHMSSS and DSIP Focal Person, opened the training by presenting the overview and objectives of the program. Engr. Vanessa F. Lariosa, DSIP Staff, then discussed the salient features of RA 11985, along with the SPTI and SPR, highlighting the provisions for salt producers. This was followed by Ms. Honey Joy D. Boston, PHMSSS Staff, who emphasized the importance of artisanal salt and its role in preserving traditional practices while adding value to local products. Meanwhile, Mr. Salinor B. Minalang, PHMSSS Staff, tackled food safety, focusing on hazards and quality standards in salt production. Finally, Engr. Keithe Godwin V. Abad, DSIP Staff, introduced modernized methods of salt production that could help local producers adopt improved technologies and practices.
In addition, fisherfolks were also equipped with financial knowledge through a financial literacy session led by Ms. Ropah T. Oracion and Ms. Geraldine C. Balisacan, RFTFCD Staff together with Ms. Jo-Ann J. Panictican, OIC-Training Unit RFTFCD.
Each activity was further strengthened by the presence and support of LGU representatives, barangay captains, and kagawads from the respective communities โ showing that the revival of salt is truly a shared effort. Among those present were Engr. Harouf Alkie Yussoph, Fishery Coordinator of LGU Palimbang, and Mr. Guianang Bandala, Monitoring Officer of LGU Palimbang representing Hon. Myrna C. Kapina, Mayor of Palimbang. Barangay officials also gave their support, including Mr. Tamano A. Mariano who represented the Brgy. Captain of Namat, Hon. Jackie T. Labuan, Brgy. Captain of Wasag, Hon. Romy Bensang, Brgy. Kagawad of Kanipaan, Hon. Jainudin Ali, Brgy. Captain of Lupoken, and Brgy. Kagawad Jimmy Ulalisan and Simeon Singgon from Brgy. Barongis.
What makes DSIP important is its purpose: to revitalize and strengthen the country's salt industry, which for years was called an โorphan industryโ due to limited attention and support. With DSIP โ BFAR aims to bring back pride in our very own salt by combining traditional knowledge with modern approaches, ensuring that local producers are equipped to face todayโs challenges.
This is just the beginning of DSIP in Region XII โ with continued cooperation and hard work, we move closer to answering the call: โPasiglahin, Sariling Ating Asin!โ

The DSIP is a locally funded BFAR project designed to revive and revitalize the Philippine Salt Industry through modernized salt production methods. Alongside these innovations, the project also continues to support the traditional โtisaโ method of salt production, keeping it as part of the industryโs development. Through this project, BFAR calls on to everyone โ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐ฃ, ๐๐๐ง๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ผ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ผ๐จ๐๐ฃ!โ- a united effort to bring back the strength and pride of local salt production.
The ceremony opened with Hon. Rogelio G. Solis, Barangay Captain โ Brgy. Buayan, who expressed his strong support for the project, recalling his personal connection to the salt-making community.
Following him, Ms. Laila L. Emperua, DSIP Focal/OIC-PHMSSS, presented the project rationale โ sharing the history of salt industry, its drastic changes from once-booming sector to its current state, and the goals of DSIP for the salt producers of Region XII.
Mr. Omar M. Sabal, Assistant Regional Director/OIC-FPSSD, emphasized that this is only the beginning of BFARโs interventions to revitalize the salt industry. He stressed that many more steps lie ahead and called for unity and support from everyone to ensure the projectโs success. Consequently, the certificate of turnover for the project was awarded to the President of the Asinan Buayan Fisherfolk Association, Ms. Irene R. Manlangit, symbolizing BFARโs direct handover of support and resources to the community.
Representing the City Mayor, Atty. Nikkie Khristine R. Catolico, Executive Assistant to Hon. Lorelie G. Pacquiao, conveyed the mayorโs message of support for the project. She wished for its success and for the pride of General Santos Cityโs Purok Asinan in Brgy. Buayan to be restored.
The ceremony comes to an end with Mr. Mufrid N. Ibrahim, PFO South Cotabato, who delivered the closing remarks, reaffirming his support for the projectโs objectives and vision.
With the turnover of the Development of Salt Industry Project to the Asinan Buayan Fisherfolk Association โ it now embarks on its first steps towards revitalizing the pride of our local salt industry. There is still much to do, but with everyoneโs cooperation and dedication, we can ensure its success. ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ก๐๐๐๐ฃ, ๐๐๐ง๐๐ก๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ผ๐ฉ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐ผ๐จ๐๐ฃ!
