As part of the Nutrition Month 2026 Celebration, the Healthy Packed Lunch Challenge was successfully conducted to encourage hospital personnel to prepare nutritious, balanced, and affordable meals that promote healthy eating habits.
The activity aimed to demonstrate the practical application of the Pinggang Pinoy food guide by showcasing packed lunches that were nutritionally adequate, visually appealing, cost-effective, and prepared using safe food handling practices.
Employees from various hospital departments enthusiastically participated by presenting creative packed lunch entries that reflected the principles of balanced nutrition. Each entry was evaluated by a panel of judges based on established criteria, including nutritional value, balance of food groups, creativity and presentation, food safety and hygiene, practicality, and overall adherence to healthy eating principles.
The competition fostered healthy camaraderie among participants while reinforcing the importance of making informed food choices in everyday life. The challenge highlighted that preparing healthy meals does not necessarily require expensive ingredients; rather, proper meal planning and the use of fresh, locally available, and nutrient-rich foods can result in nutritious and affordable packed lunches.
Participants demonstrated creativity in incorporating vegetables, fruits, lean protein sources, and whole grains into their meal preparations while minimizing processed foods and excessive fats, sugar, and sodium. The Healthy Packed Lunch Challenge received 22 entries from employees representing various departments of the Ilocos Sur District Hospital – Sinait.
