Staying Safe Online
The World Wide Web is, any many ways, like the Wild, Wild West. It’s full of exciting opportunities and emerging technologies like the various types of social media in this chapter. But it also has its share of hazards, including cyber bandits. To protect yourself, your family, and your computing device, you’ll need to follow a few common-sense precautions.
▶ Protect your identity.
Don’t reveal personal details to strangers online.
▶ Use trusted sites and services.
Stick to sites and services with a national or worldwide reputation to be safe.
▶ Look before you click.
Spammers disguise dangerous links with innocent names. If you aren’t sure, don’t click.
▶ Close the door.
When finished using a personal account from a public computer—at school, at the library, or even at someone else’s house—remember to log out.
▶ Don’t download anything questionable.
The surest way to get a computer virus is to download something you shouldn’t. Be sure you know exactly what you are installing before giving it access to your computer.
▶ Make sure your computer has antivirus and antispam software.
Be sure to keep the program’s virus definitions up to date, though.

With millions of people active on social media platforms daily across the world, users must keep to protocol standards when interacting. Just like interacting with people face-to-face, it’s important to keep the same etiquette on social media.
Although social media interaction can be seen as a much less personal form of communication, it is no less important to be respectful and value other users online. There are certain behaviours that you’ll need to avoid and others that should always be top of mind when interacting on social media.
To bolster online relations and keep your profile respected it’s important to make sure you fully understand the way things are done online whenever you’re communicating online. Being aware of social media etiquette and ensuring that you always apply such behaviour online is key to enhancing your social media experience. Even if you’re up to speed on all things ‘social media’ it’s always a good idea to complete a social media course to make sure you understand social media etiquette and apply it whenever you’re online.
To learn more of social media etiquette this upcoming April 24 we have a webinar present more about this topic.
See you there!!

What is social media etiquette?
Social media etiquette refers to the guidelines that companies and individuals use to preserve their reputation online.
As social media channels have evolved to become one of the primary ways people communicate in the modern world on a daily basis, typical social rules are finding their way into digital environments.
Just as social etiquette dictates how people behave around others in the real world, social media etiquette revolves around online guidelines to follow.
