The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary 601st Squadron (PCGA) led by Auxiliary Captain Rex Castaneda, Squadron Director, successfully participated in the "Oplan Beyaheng Ayos: Undas 2024" operation, ensuring the safety and security of travelers during the All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day commemorations.

PCGA personnel were deployed to various ports and beach resorts to assist passengers and beachgoers, providing a safe and smooth travel experience for everyone.

The 601st Squadron, led by Auxiliary Captain Rex Castaneda, Squadron Director, conducted a clean-up drive and mangrove planting activity, together with several divisions, held in Katalugan, Leganes, Iloilo.

The Katunggan Ecopark is a mangrove rehabilitation site located in the municipality of Leganes in Iloilo Province.

Leganes is a coastal town with a total land area of 3,200 ha and 6km of coastline. It has a population of 30, 989 residing in its 12 inland and 6 coastal barangay. Along and near its coastline, there are about 591 ha of fishpond in Leganes.

Mangrove trees are known for their ability to withstand harsh conditions of water flow, including tidal fluctuations, changes in salinity, and poor soil conditions. Their roots provide protection for coastlines against erosion and serve as habitat for numerous species of birds, fish, and other marine animals. Additionally, mangrove forests play a crucial role in balancing coastal ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity.

LOOK:

The PCGA 601st CGAS, CGADWV together with the Phil. coast Guard District, Coast Guard District Western Visayas, Standard Insurance assisted the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, Community Extension Services, together with Stolt-Nielsen Philippines Inc. and JCI Regatta, established the two additional coral beds for the expansion of the coral gardening project in igang bay maritime sanctuary last march 22, 2024.

This collaborative effort aims to enhance the biodiversity and ecological resilience of our marine environment The biodiversity and ecological resilience of our marine environment which are crucial for sustaining life on Earth.

Our oceans are home to a vast array of species, from tiny plankton to massive whales, and they play a vital role in regulating the planet's climate, providing food and livelihoods for millions of people, and supporting diverse ecosystems.

Marine biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of life in the ocean, including the different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, as well as the genetic diversity within those species.

It encompasses not only the diversity of species but also the diversity of habitats and ecosystems, such as coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, and deep-sea trenches.

The ecological resilience of marine environments refers to their ability to withstand and recover from disturbances, such as natural disasters, pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Healthy marine ecosystems are resilient ecosystems that can adapt to changes and maintain their functions and services over time.

The Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary of the 601st Squadron spearheaded by Aux. Capt. Rex Castaneda, Squadron Director and Lt. Hilarion Lauresta, DDAS for Operation, collaborated with various divisions in conducting a feeding activity for the victims of a fire in Barangay Old Airport, Mandurriao, Iloilo City on March 5, 2024.

The fire occurred on the mentioned date, affecting over 115 families and 426 individuals who are currently in evacuation centers.

The group prepared tasty arrozcaldo, 7 trays of boiled eggs, along with pandesal, and bottled water.
