THE LONG WALK TO CADETSHIP: AN ICON OF HOPE AND DETERMINATION

What we want to become, so the saying goes, begins early in life. The young, vivacious Cadet 2C Fabricante first realized who he wanted to be when he was in high school.

When he was considering his future during his time at Iligan City National High School, he caught a glimpse of his modest future. He wanted to make this reality a priority. Wearing that blue uniform with bright, stark gold accents and an anahaw on the shoulders felt surreal. So he carried out.

"Hindi ko makita yung sarili ko sa ibang trabaho maliban sa pagiging pulis," as he went on expressing his sincere desire to work in law enforcement, to serve the country, and to maintain peace and order in the community.

He was fortunate to have his parents' strong support for his ambition. And it's true that having support from others increases your chances of succeeding in pursuing an initially seemingly insurmountable goal. Even though he had personal fears and doubts that are inevitable when one wants something intensely, they always encouraged him to dream big—that he could travel as far as the stars, even though his goal was only to reach the moon.

He continues, "Nagpapasalamat talaga ako sa pamilya ko na hindi nagkulang sa pagbibigay ng pagmamahal at pagsuporta sa mga pangarap ko," recalling the moments when he questioned whether a native boy from a quaint barangay in Iligan City could actually join the list of refined men with tales of bravery and heroism. But he was determined to get it more than anything else in the world, and nobody could stop him.

Unless fate decides to step in and see how patient he can be when, despite his best efforts and prayers, the pieces of the puzzle don't seem to fit the wonderful picture he has in his head.

He emphasized those times when he was discouraged, saying "May mga moments talaga na I questioned my capabilities, lalo na ng sunod sunod na hindi sumasangayon sakin ang tadhana. Buti na lang pinalaki ako ng matatag ng mga magulang ko, so pinilit ko pa din mangarap, buti nalang. Kahit man lang para sa mga kapatid ko," he said, describing how his four siblings' silent support for him gave him constant motivation.

Hence, CDT 2C Fabricante took the leap of faith and took the in the year 2017. He failed. No matter, to him though, there was still next year.

However, the results were the same for him—failed.

It would be reasonable to assume that he had conceded defeat when he was at his lowest. But CDT 2C Fabricante clung to the rope even more tenaciously, never letting go of the ambition he so fervently believed was meant for him.

He never wavered in his resolve, just like water on a stream. It was an unending current that got stronger as it got closer to its destination. But when the odds were not in his favor, he viewed the outcome calmly—with the serenity of a still pond. He doesn't let his enthusiasm wane and gets back up, viewing failure as an opportunity to work hard. Although he acknowledges being shaken, he knew there was no reason to give up hope. He tells himself, "Habang buhi pa, kaya pa."

He carried on with life after his attempts to cadetship were unsuccessful by balancing the demands of college and his work as a Jollibee crew. Being one of the swiftest employees of the renowned fast-food chain, he cleaned tables and served as many customers as he could while also maintaining a high point grade average while studying Bachelor of Science in Criminology at Saint Michaels Academy.

For a working bee that was constantly on the go, a minute of rest was a luxury. But he used this valuable time to learn and get ready for his third attempt at cadetship. Finally, he joined the relatively small but mighty Layag-Diwa Class 2024.

"I told myself that it was only fitting that I failed twice,” he declares, "Dahil dun, nabigyan ko ng higit na pagpapahalaga yung cadetship ko ngayon. The struggles and hardships I endured to get here gave me the fortitude to endure the gloom of cadetship and to appreciate its bittersweet experience.”

As he learns the value of justice, integrity, and service, he is now in his third year of training and studying within the Academy's portals, and every day his vision of becoming a police officer becomes more clear. He has acquired important virtues that will help him in his pursuit of an officership by learning to take the institution's guiding principles to heart during this journey.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa Philippine National Police Academy, at sa lahat ng nagpapaaral sa amin, ang sambayang Pilipino for giving me the opportunity to make my ambition a reality,” he airs with and . For CDT 2C Fabricante, may his story of ups and downs serve as an inspiration for others.
