The Philippine Duck, often described as distinctly marked due to its unique appearance, is endemic to the Philippines and can be found mostly in the major islands of Luzon and Mindanao. Feeding on a variety of fish, shrimps, insects, rice and young vegetation, you can find their population occurring in both freshwater and saltwater bodies—inside forests, mangroves and even in the open sea.
Philippine Ducks have been victims of overhunting and trapping. This threat to their population has begun as early as 1960s. Two decades later, hunting these species became prevalent that they were shot weekly during the months of January to March and August to October. Conversion of their natural habitats also contributes to the decline in their population. These factors led to the Philippine Ducks being listed as Vulnerable in the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.
Locally known as Tanepol or Papan in Maguindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Philippine Ducks occur in the Ligawasan Marsh, a wetland found in the Mindanao River Basin. In protected areas in the Philippines, conservation efforts are underway to preserve the species’ population. The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) - BARMM shall support and act on the conservation and protection of threatened wildlife, including the Philippine Duck. Efforts such as surveying of wetland areas, hunting restrictions, and creation of wetland habitat management plan will be fostered to eliminate the threat surrounding the wildlife that rely and survive on the resources provided by our wetlands

The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) - BARMM joins the nation in the observance of Zero Waste Month this January, which bears the theme “Change Your View for 2022: Waste No More”.
Zero Waste refers to the advocacy that fosters the systematic, sustainable, and eco-friendly design and management of products and processes. It aims to promote a lifestyle where individuals discard materials while considering that others can use these resources.
The MENRE, headed by BARMM Senior Minister Abdulraof A. Macacua, reminds the Bangsamoro to reevaluate the volume of waste we create and urges the practice of reducing, reusing, and recycling waste materials. Indeed, the Ministry encourages the public to “change your view and waste no more.” With one waste material reduced, reused, and recycled, we are one step closer to a cleaner and healthier Bangsamoro environment.
Zero Waste Month is celebrated annually every January as declared by Proclamation No. 760, dated 5 May 2014. This year also marks the 21st signing anniversary of the Proclamation.

During the Sulu Hornbill expedition of the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PBCFI) conducted in the Municipality of Panglima Sugala in Tawi-Tawi, researchers found a new lipstick vine species growing in the lowland forests of the said municipality—the latest Philippine species of Aeschynanthus to be described in past two decades.
Sheila Mae Olimpos, a botanist from PBCFI, discovered the latest lipstick vine, while Jayson Mansibang of the Philippine Taxonomic Initiative (PTI) helped in describing, illustrating, and publishing the findings of the discovery. The species was given the scientific name Aeschynanthus rejieae, which pays tribute to Rejie Sahali-Generale and her commitment and passion towards biodiversity conservation efforts in Panglima Sugala.
Olimpos stated that there are limitations in conducting further research for the new lipstick vine due to logging and mining activities, agricultural expansion, and insurgencies.
In addition, the study couldn’t conclude if the found A. rejieae was a common or rare species, thereby categorizing the species as ‘Data Deficient’ in terms of information regarding its conservation status.
The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) - BARMM continues to collaborate with the Local Government Unit of Panglima Sugala, Philippine Biodiversity Inc., security officers, and law enforces, and other governmental and non-governmental organizations for the conservation of the forests of Tawi-Tawi — the primary home of the province’s wildlife species that make it biodiversity-rich.
