ACCESSIBLE HEALTHCARE FOR ALL, BANGKAHEALTH INITIATIVE LAUNCHED IN SULU: In a bid to strengthen health access for all and bridge health care needs, the DICT and mWell pilots the BangkaHealth Initiative in Hadji Panglima Tahil, Sulu Friday, June 27, the first telemedicine platform modality in the country to utilize bangkas or small boats to reach residents in remote and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

Enabling the BangkaHealth were Starlink-powered internet connectivity provided by the DICT and the mWell OnTheGo Bag equipped with health passes for free consultations by Huawei, which allowed health workers from the Rural Health Unit of Hadji Panglima Tahil to go house-to-house and deliver health care services to residents living in houses on stilts.

This initiative fills in a significant gap in healthcare in the municipality as the RHU Hadji Panglima Tahil presently does not have a community doctor to see to the needs of over 7,000 residents living in the cluster of islands off the coast of Sulu. With the telemedicine platform, they now have instant and free connection to over 2,000 doctors and medical specialists nationwide.

The addition of the BangkaHealth is built on the foundations of the Hadji Panglima Tahil as one of the Smart Villages Smart Islands (SVSI) sites established by the DICT Regional Office IX and BASULTA in 2024. As an SVSI site, the island municipality was provided with Free Wifi, ICT equipment, and the mWell OnTheGo telemedicine platform.

BangkaHealth is sailing to Sulu! 🩺📶

As a culminating activity for National ICT Month, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in partnership with mWell, is set to launch the pilot implementation of BangkaHealth—an innovative initiative bringing teleconsultation services directly to households in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs).

Through this project, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) will be equipped with mWell On-The-Go Bags and supported by Starlink-powered mobile internet provided by DICT, allowing them to deliver house-to-house digital healthcare services via bangka (small boats) to residents living in stilt houses.

This initiative embodies the spirit of “Walang Iwanan sa Digital Bayanihan” by demonstrating how technology can be mobilized to improve access to essential healthcare, strengthen primary care systems, and empower local government units to sustain inclusive digital services.
