DOST-CAR Regional Director Dr. Nancy A. Bantog underscored the importance of science, technology, innovation, and collaboration in strengthening disaster resilience during her opening message at the 2026 Handa Pilipinas – Luzon Leg Stakeholders’ Forum on October 28, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Clark, Pampanga.

RD Bantog emphasized that disaster resilience requires a continuing and integrated effort from understanding risks and preventing their impacts to preparing communities, responding effectively to disasters, and rebuilding lives and livelihoods.

Drawing from DOST-CAR’s experience in the Cordillera Administrative Region, she reaffirmed the importance of making science, technology, and innovation accessible and responsive to the needs of local government units (LGUs). She cited initiatives such as the deployment of GeoRiskPH and the development of digital tools for disaster risk information and management as part of efforts to strengthen local capacities for risk-informed planning and decision-making.

Meanwhile, LGU-La Trinidad, Benguet Mayor Roderick C. Awingan was one of the panelists in the forum’s discussion - Showcasing DRRM Innovations and Best Practices of Local Champions. He presented the municipality’s innovative approaches and best practices in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM), sharing local experiences and initiatives that contribute to strengthening disaster preparedness and community resilience.

The panel discussion brought together local champions to share their experiences and strategies across the four thematic areas of DRRM: Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Response, and Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery. The activity provided an avenue for LGUs to exchange practical solutions, identify lessons learned, and explore approaches that may be replicated or adapted in other communities.

The Stakeholders’ Forum also featured discussions on strengthening local governance for disaster resilience, health emergency preparedness, and agricultural resilience, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts across sectors in addressing disaster risks.
