The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (DENR-ERDB), through the Forest Ecosystems Research Division (FERD), presented the national impact evaluation results of the 2015 Community-Based Forest Management–Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CBFM-CARP) projects during a National Consultation Workshop held on September 22–24, 2026, in Pasay City.

The workshop followed an earlier consultation with DENR Regional Offices in August 2026, which gathered field-level experiences and inputs to help validate the evaluation findings.

The three-day consultation brought together national and regional CBFM-CARP implementers and stakeholders to validate findings, discuss experiences across project sites, and identify practical recommendations to strengthen the program.

The workshop also tackled the draft enhanced FMB Technical Bulletin 9, or the Field Guide on the Conduct of Benchmarking and Impact Assessment of CBFM-CARP Projects, which seeks to improve project implementation, monitoring, and sustainability.

As ERDB Director Lormelyn E. Claudio emphasized, the consultation served as a “transparent reality check” on the current situation of communities involved in the program—providing a space for open discussion and turning evaluation findings into actions for stronger and more sustainable CBFM-CARP implementation.

𝐄𝐑𝐃𝐁 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒: 𝗠𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝗕. 𝗚𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗼, 𝗠𝗦𝗰.

There’s a promising new way to treat wastewater!

Electroplating industries, from automotive and electronics to jewelry and renewable energy, produce wastewater containing metals and other inorganic compounds that can harm the environment.

Existing treatment methods can remove these pollutants, but they often generate large amounts of sludge, creating another waste problem.

As part of his dissertation, Mr. Josel Godezano of ERDB-THWRDEC explores a potential solution: a single-step process that can remove and recover both copper and ammonium from electroplating wastewater using a fluidized-bed reactor.

The results are promising:
🔹 99% copper removal
🔹 75% ammonium removal
🔹 Works at near-neutral pH and room temperature
🔹 No seed material needed
🔹 Produces dense granules with only 5–6% moisture, compared with around 90% in conventional sludge

And the recovered granules aren't simply waste—they contain copper, nitrogen, and phosphorus, which could potentially be used as micronutrient fertilizers.

By recovering useful materials instead of simply disposing of them, this approach could help move wastewater treatment toward a more circular and resource-efficient system. ♻️🌱
